Book Synopsis The Classical Orders of Architecture by : Robert Chitham
Download or read book The Classical Orders of Architecture written by Robert Chitham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-03-14 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the only publication that presents a modern interpretation of the Classical Orders. The new edition of this successful title now includes the proportions in both metric and imperial measurements to make the orders more accessible and to provide a valuable reference for designers. The inclusion of both 100-part and 96-part systems of proportion is underpinned by an essay on James Gibbs - one of the 18th century authors of standardized proportioning systems - and his influence in America. Along with additional plates, this book gives a clear introduction to those not familiar with the classical genre and is an easy to follow guide which assists architects, interior designers and conservators with the quality of their design.

Book Synopsis British Architectural Theory 1540-1750 by : Caroline van Eck
Download or read book British Architectural Theory 1540-1750 written by Caroline van Eck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was published in 2003.Although it is often assumed that British writing on architectural theory really started in the 18th century, there is in fact a large corpus of writing on architecture pre-dating the introduction of Palladianism by Lord Burlington. Some of it, such as the English editions of Serlio and Palladio, belongs to the Vitruvian tradition. But many texts elude such easy classification, such as the prolonged (but hardly studied) discussions on church architecture, which are both in form and content very different from the way that theme was handled in Italian Renaissance treatises. This collection of English writing on architecture from 1540 to 1750 offers a large selection of fragments, some of them never published before. They discuss the nature of architecture, the practicalities of building, the sense of the past, religious architecture and classicism.

Book Synopsis Classical Architecture by : Curl James Stevens
Download or read book Classical Architecture written by Curl James Stevens and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2003-04-29 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This well-illustrated book describes the fundamental principles and various aspects of classical architecture, including a detailed, illustrated glossary that is almost a dictionary of classical architecture in itself. Professor James Stevens Curl discusses in clear, straightforward language the origins of classical architecture in Greek and Roman antiquity and outlines its continuous development, through its various manifestations during the Renaissance, its transformations in Baroque and Rococo phases, its reemergence in eighteenth-, nineteenth-, and twentieth-century Neoclassicism, and its survival into the modern era. The text and illustrations celebrate the richness of the classical architectural vocabulary, grammar, and language, and demonstrate the enormous range of themes and motifs found in the subject. All those who wish to look at buildings old and new with an informed eye will find in this book a rich fund of material, and the basis for an understanding of a fecund source of architectural design that has been at the heart of western culture for over two and a half millennia.

Book Synopsis From the Temple to the Castle by : Lee Morrissey
Download or read book From the Temple to the Castle written by Lee Morrissey and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visiting Britain in the mid-18th century, Andre Rouquet wrote that ""in England more than in any other country, every man would fain be his own architect."" Not surprisingly, then, several of the most important 18th-century British authors were also practicing architects: John Vanbrugh, a playwrite, designed Blenheim Palace; the poet Alexander Pope offered architectural drawings for redesigning the houses of friends; and Horace Walpole claimed that the home he renovated, Strawberry Hill, inspired his Novel ""The Castle of Otranto"". The work of John Milton and Thomas Gray also exhibits an abiding interest in architecture. By examining the connections between literature and architecture in the work of these writers and by viewing architecture in literary terms, Lee Morissey traces a narrative of cultural change in the Augustan age and beyond. A literary scholar with a strong background in architectural theory and practice, Morissey examines architectural references made by these authors and architectural publications familiar to them. Each chapter establishes a connection with architecture in the careers of an author and then describes how a principal text - ""Paradise Lost"", ""The Provok'd Wife"", ""An Essay on Man"", ""Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard"", and ""The Castle of Otranto"" - focuses the literary and historical issues of the period in architectural terms. While some 20th-century architectural theorists have worried that treating architecture in literary terms robs it of its social function, Morrissey argues that architecture can be a language and still participate in political and social contexts, because language itself is political and social. The fruit of his argument is a unique intellectual history of late 17th- and early 18th-century Britain of use to scholars of architectural history and landscape architecture as well as of literature.
