Originally published in two Penguin paperbacks in the 1980's, a single-volume comprehensive compendium, hailed widely as "easily the best annotated Gilbert & Sullivan available" (Gayden Wren, New York Times) was published by Oxford University Press in 1996. This brand new 20th anniversary edition includes Thespis, Gilbert and Sullivan's first collaboration which is now being increasingly performed, despite the loss of the vocal and orchestral scores. It also features a completely new introduction, reflecting on the state of Gilbert and Sullivan nearly 150 years after the pair began their legendary collaboration, and new annotations addressing recent performance history, newly discovered 'lost' songs and dialogue, and, for the first time, Gilbert and Sullivan references in contemporary popular culture. Book excerpt: When Abby and her brother Chris moved house four summers ago, they discovered that magic exists, met a pair of witches that lived down the road and carried out a heroic rescue of their mother from the Land of Fairy. But despite the discovery of their own magical talents, the memories of those events are beginning to fade. And even Abby, who gave up her magic to save her mother and carries the scars of a ghost sabre tooth tiger, is forgetting that eventful summer. Then, whilst Chris is away and Abby is helping the witches during the Easter holidays, the Queen of the Land of Fairy comes back into Abby's life, looking for help. Even though the witches try to protect her, Abby gets drawn into events with frightening consequences. She must face the results of what happened to her in the Land of Fairy, rescue her neighbour, and stop a magical war. That's a lot of pressure for an eleven-year-old girl even with a warrior's soul, magic always has a price and a warrior's work is seldom done.

Book Synopsis The Bible in Verse by : Rob Bellingham
Download or read book The Bible in Verse written by Rob Bellingham and published by LifeRich Publishing. This book was released on 2023-01-19 with total page 1122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the beginning, bereshith, the Genesis text begins, God created heaven, earth, and many other things. The world was dark, shapeless, with no life or light, God said “Let’s have light,” so made day and night. Water, water everywhere, in heaven and down below, God sorted into clouds and rain, sea, lakes and snow. Earth was next on the agenda, of God’s creative plan, He filled it with plants, trees, fish, animals, birds, man. He made stars, sun and moon, seasons hot and cold, “Be fruitful and multiply” all creatures were told. Scholars claim that one third of the bible is poetry, more easily recognized in Hebrew than most English versions. In a poetic interpretation of the entire bible inspired by a conversation with God in 2010, Rob Bellingham shares a collection of rhyming couplets intended to be theologically sensitive regarding both gender and doctrine. Bible in Verse is a volume of inspirational rhyming couplets that offers a creative, succinct, and memorable look at a very familiar text.

Book Synopsis The Ancient Quarrel Between Poetry and Philosophy by : Thomas Gould
Download or read book The Ancient Quarrel Between Poetry and Philosophy written by Thomas Gould and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Affecting audiences with depictions of suffering and injustice is a key function of tragedy, and yet it has long been viewed by philosophers as a dubious enterprise. In this book Thomas Gould uses both historical and theoretical approaches to explore tragedy and its power to gratify readers and audiences. He takes as his starting point Plato's moral and psychological objections to tragedy, and the conflict he recognized between "poetry"--the exploitation of our yearning to see ourselves as victims--and "philosophy"--the insistence that all good people are happy. Plato's objections to tragedy are shown to be an essential feature of Socratic rationalism and to constitute a formidable challenge even today. Gould makes a case for the rightness and psychological necessity of violence and suffering in literature, art, and religion, but he distinguishes between depictions of violence that elicit sympathy only for the victims and those that cause us to sympathize entirely with the perpetrators. It is chiefly the former, Gould argues, that fuel our responses not only to true tragedy but also to religious myths and critical displays of political rage. Originally published in 1990.
