Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the Insistence of Kevin, Con Kruger wrote this fascinating biography introducing the Krugers in South Africa and the Cunynghames in England. The Progenitor Jacob Kruger arrived in Table Bay, South Africa, during 1713. Kevin's family background is an admixture of French, Belgian, German and Royal English genes (well camouflaged to protect his pony breeding business in Sussex, England). The story is cast against the larger canvass of the war between the global British Empire and the two tiny independent Zar and OFS Boer Republics during the last 20 years of Queen Victoria's reign - a war described as barbaric. This shameful period in British history has remained largely unknown covered by a thick-veiled diplomatic silence. Lest the Empire's brutal cruelty to animals and other atrocities be forgotten, Kevin feels compelled to recall the details. Kevin goes further. These wrongs must be redressed. He is resolute that those in command of the Empire Army face charges of war crimes. Warning: This book contains material that may upset sensitive readers. Con Kruger, born January 1930, is an eighth generation offspring of progenitor Jacob Kruger, who married a manumitted slave daughter, Jannetjie Kemp. She started the Kruger clan by bearing Jacob eight children during the early 1700's. Con obtained a master's degree in psychopathology and a doctorate in industrial psychology from Stellenbosch University. He practiced as a consulting psychologist from 1952 to 1992. He has authored two historical dramas and four anthologies of Afrikaans poetry. He now lives at the southernmost tip of the African continent at Cape Agulhas. Download or read book Afterlight written by Isa Milman and published by Heritage House Publishing Co. This book was released on 2021-09-06 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A haunting memoir of war, genocide, displacement, and a daughter’s search for the literary works of her mother’s murdered twin. Grieving the death of her mother in 2013, author Isa Milman embarked on a heart-wrenching journey to unravel a family mystery—the whereabouts of her aunt’s long-lost poems, published in Poland in the early 1930s—which evolved into a broader investigation of her family’s life before, during, and after the Holocaust. This powerful memoir chronicles a lesser-known chapter of the Second World War through the story of two sisters: Sabina, Isa’s mother, who survived the war, and Basia, Sabina’s twin, who did not. Exploring themes of loss and displacement, regeneration and resilience, Isa discovers how her own story is woven into the immense yet intricate tapestry of the Jewish experience. As she delves into her family’s history, accompanied by her husband, a native British Columbian, she travels to contemporary Poland, Ukraine, and Germany, and tries to reconcile her shifting appreciation of people and place, in a world where anti-Semitism and other forms of extremism are on the rise once again.
Book Synopsis A Natural History of Latin by : Tore Janson
Download or read book A Natural History of Latin written by Tore Janson and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-01-25 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in Rome around 600 BC, Latin became the language of the civilized world and remained so for more than two millennia. French, Spanish, Italian, and Romanian are among its progeny and it provides the international vocabulary of law and life science. No known language, including English - itself enriched by Latin words and phrases - has achieved such success and longevity. Tore Janson tells its history from origins to present. Brilliantly conceived and written with the same light touch as his bestselling history of languages, A Natural History of Latin is a masterpiece of adroit synthesis. The author charts the expansion of Latin in the classical world, its renewed importance in the Middle Ages, and its survival into modern times. He shows how spoken and written Latin evolved in different places and its central role in European history and culture. He ends with a concise Latin grammar and lists of Latin words and phrases still in common use. Considered elitist and irrelevant in the second half of the twentieth century and often even banned from schools, Latin is now enjoying a huge revival of interest across Europe, the UK, and the USA. Tore Janson offers persuasive arguments for its value and gives direct access to its fascinating worlds, past and present.
