A workshop was held at Keele University, UK, from 12-14 June 2007 to discuss the observations, their interpretation, and where RS Ophiuchi sits in the wider astrophysical picture. The workshop considered not only the 2006 eruption of RS Oph but also the implications that this has had for our understanding of other much broader areas of astrophysics. It was wide ranging, taking in the environments of red giants; supernova progenitors; accretion, thermonuclear processes and evolution of close binary systems; and shocks of jets, as well as recurrent novae and related objects. Numerical simulations of this theory were performed using an implicit hydrodynamic Lagrangian computer code. Relevant physical phenomena are explained with the simpler envelope-in-place calculations. Next the models that include accretion are discussed. The calculations agree very well with observations of common novae. The observational differences between common novae and recurrent novae are examined. We propose input parameters to the TNR model which can give the outburst characteristics of RS Ophiuchi and discuss the implications. This review is concluded with a brief discussion of two current topics in novae research: shear mixing on the white dwarf and Neon novae. 36 refs., 4 figs.

Book excerpt: This book, which is a reworked and updated version of Steven Bloemen’s original PhD thesis, reports on several high-precision studies of compact variable stars. Its strength lies in the large variety of observational, theoretical and instrumentation techniques that are presented and used and paves the way towards new and detailed asteroseismic applications of single and binary subdwarf stars. Close binary stars are studied using high cadence spectroscopic datasets collected with state of the art electron multiplying CCDs and analysed using Doppler tomography visualization techniques. The work touches upon instrumentation, presenting the calibration of a new fast, multi-colour camera installed at the Mercator Telescope on La Palma. The thesis also includes theoretical work on the computation of the temperature range in which stellar oscillations can be driven in subdwarf B-stars. Finally, the highlight of the thesis is the measurement of velocities of stars using only photometric data from NASA's Kepler satellite. Doppler beaming causes stars to appear slightly brighter when they move towards us in their orbits, and this subtle effect can be seen in Kepler's brightness measurements. The thesis presents the first validation of such velocity measurements using independent spectroscopic measurements. Since the detection and validation of this Doppler beaming effect, it has been used in tens of studies to detect and characterize binary star systems, which are key calibrators in stellar astronomy.

Considerable new multi-wavelength observations during the last decade together with the results of many theoretical studies are enabling the physics and connectedness of these two phenomena to be understood more deeply. These proceedings are of a conference held at Shanghai Normal University, on a very pleasant campus southwest of the city. More than 120 participants from over 20 different countries were in attendance. The goals of the conference were to review past progress, present new results, plan future work, and establish observational and theoretical collaborations. We were treated to the first in-depth presentation of Spitzer Space Telescope mid- IR spectroscopy and imaging/photometry as well as new detailed theoretical modeling of the relationship and interaction between starbursts and AGN. Also presented were major new studies of the local universe from SDSS and other ground-based radio, IR/optical, and space-based x-ray observatories. The importance of the intense starburst and AGN activity in the early universe only 1 billion years after the Big Bang is becoming evident from the very early formation of extremely massive galaxies and black holes. The coming together and cross-fertilization of these studies at the conference was most productive.

They are in a short-lived but important stage of stellar evolution, characterized by pulsations, dust formation, and the production of expanding circumstellar shells. This conference highlighted the physics of evolved cool stars in relation to their stage of evolution, atmospheric structure and dynamics, stellar winds, and associated dust formation. The conference was held at the Millennium Centre near the campus of East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee, in July 2007. It brought together astronomers, both professional and amateur, who are working on different aspects of cool star research. These included dust theorists, numerical modelers, and experts in observations at different wavelengths. The result of the meeting was a more complete picture of these stars, which is summarized in this volume. Several recent developments motivated the need for this conference. Current hydrodynamic models of evolved stars are now able to reproduce the optical/UV spectra of such stars. However, simultaneous modeling of the infrared spectrum has proven difficult. Also, adding dust to such modeling is problematic because of the complicated physics of dust formation, destruction, and emission in these dynamic environments. Furthermore, the exact evolutionary relationship between the various types of cool evolved stars still is uncertain. The perceptive reader will discover a number of provocative research directions embedded in the many fine contributions herein.
