Book excerpt: American Horticultural Society Book Award Winner: “An essential reference for all who wish to understand the science of the all-powerful weed.” —Better Homes and Gardens “What is a weed,” opined Emerson, “but a plant whose virtues have not yet been discovered?” While that may be a worthy notion in theory, these plants of undiscovered virtue cause endless hours of toil for backyard gardeners. Wherever they take root, weeds compete for resources, and most often win. They also wreak havoc on industry—from agriculture to golf courses to civic landscape projects, vast amounts of money are spent to eradicate these virile and versatile invaders. With so much at stake, reliable information on weeds and their characteristics is crucial. Richard Dickinson and France Royer shed light on this complex world with Weeds of North America. Organized by plant family, this encyclopedic volume features over five hundred species in two-page spreads with images and text identification keys. Species are arranged within family alphabetically by scientific name, and entries include vital information on seed viability and germination requirements. No matter what your philosophy on weeds, this guide provides much-needed background on these intrusive organisms. In the battle with weeds, knowledge truly is power, and Weeds of North America is perfect for gardeners, botanists, nature lovers, or anyone working in the business of weed ecology and control. “Royer’s photographs are almost perversely alluring. . . . How can you not be ensnared by a book populated by prostrate pigweed, tansy ragwort and dog-strangling vine?” —New York Times Book Review

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arab revolutions of 2011 were a transformative moment in the modern history of the Middle East, as people rose up against long-standing autocrats throughout the region to call for 'bread, freedom and dignity'. With the passage of time, results have been decidedly mixed, with tentative success stories like Tunisia contrasting with the emergence of even more repressive dictatorships in places like Egypt, with the backing of several Gulf states. Focusing primarily on Egypt, this book considers a relatively understudied dimension of these revolutions: the role of prominent religious scholars. While pro-revolutionary ulama have justified activism against authoritarian regimes, counter-revolutionary scholars have provided religious backing for repression, and in some cases the mass murder of unarmed protestors. Usaama al-Azami traces the public engagements and religious pronouncements of several prominent ulama in the region, including Yusuf al-Qaradawi, Ali Gomaa and Abdullah bin Bayyah, to explore their role in either championing the Arab revolutions or supporting their repression. He concludes that while a minority of noted scholars have enthusiastically endorsed the counter-revolutions, their approach is attributable less to premodern theology and more to their distinctly modern commitment to the authoritarian state.

Each chapter includes vortex strength, type, accessibility, directions and more, giving you the chance to connect with these sites at your own pace. The Hawaiian Islands as a whole are known to be a major energetic power spot and so a vortex site here is a place where one can feel the spiritual healing energy, or mana, most strongly. This book focuses on the healing aspect of the vortex and aims to reconnect the reader with the land in a totally new age yet surprisingly ancient way! Vortexes tend to exist where there are strong concentrations of gravitational and magnetic anomalies, in turn creating an environment that can promote physical and emotional healing, defy gravity, bend light, startle animals, twist plant life into spiral shapes and some mystery spots can cause people to appear as though they've shrunk in size. Hawai'i is home to some of the most powerful concentrations of earth energies on the planet and each island has a unique vibe and attractive force that calls to people. Many subtle energy researchers believe the Hawaiian Islands act as the heart chakra of the planet, a place of unconditional love & healing.

Book excerpt: There are two doorways into the life of the gallant Mexican priest Padre Pro. One doorway begins at the end, during an intense period of anti-Catholicism in Mexico, in the high public drama of a daring young priest’s use of disguises and audacious risks to secretly carry communion to the faithful, with his subsequent capture and courageous death. The other doorway starts in the heart of Miguel’s closely knit, devout family. Born in 1891, by fifteen, Miguel is at once a beloved son and a mischievous rascal. Rather than attending school far away from the affectionate society of his sisters and brothers, he assists his father, an agent assigned to a remote mining camp in Zacatecas. His family begins to worry when at twenty the generous, yet often moody, young man still has no idea about the direction his future should take. Then he knows. Miguel’s journey to the priesthood is plagued by difficulties and setbacks that temper and transform the mischievous youth into Padre Pro, a man ready to lay down his life for Christ his King. Blessed Miguel Pro dies before a firing squad in Mexico City in 1927, this last unforgettable triumph-in-death photographed for posterity by his very enemies. Padre Miguel Pro was beatified in 1988 by Pope John Paul II. Historical Insight article by Daria Sockey Revised edition Ages 9-14; about 189 pages

Book excerpt: In this book, I write about a connection I noticed between natural disasters and ancient stone structures like pyramids and megaliths. I suggest a new approach to reducing the intensity of earthquakes and other natural disasters with specific placements of pyramids and other massive constructions. Plans are already underway to stabilize the earth's grid with new megalithic constructions being built today. Based on years of study into environmental science, climate change, natural disasters, worldwide famine and planetary unbalance -- coupled with my life long thirst of ancient history (and mystery), I truly believe that most of the unusual ancient structures like Stonehenge and the pyramids of Giza were built to interact with the Earth's energies, forces of nature such as magnetism, gravity, light, heat, and telluric energy. Think of it as acupuncture on a planetary scale. Human beings seek acupuncture for certain ailments, when energy pathways, known as meridians, are blocked, a condition which can lead to disease and fatigue. The human body and the earth are constructed in a similar way, the saying "As Above, So Below" is more than just a saying...it's a universal Truth. I emphasize that in this book. While researching for Pyramid Rising, I learned from a colleague that rebuilding the pyramid grid could also repair the wandering North and South Poles, locking them into place once again, giving us back the perfect 360 day year. Could that have been the ultimate reason for their construction? Possibly.
