Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peeps at Royal Palaces of Great Britain Scarcely anything remains to-day to remind us of the vast size and the magnificence of the Palace of West minster, the royal residence of the English Kings from the time of Edward the Confessor until the reign of Henry VIII. For five centuries the monarchs of Eng land kept their Court on the island of Thorney, within the sound of the bells of the great minster raised by the piety of the saintly Edward. Though the early Kings were seldom long in one place, they regarded Westminster as their principal palace, and often kept their Christmas festivals there, a time of general feasting at the royal expense. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Royal Palace of Whitehall The old Palace of Whitehall has great claims to public interest, both by reason of its antiquity and of its historical associations, to say nothing of its intimate connection with the lives of the Tudor and Stuart Sovereigns, and the dramatic events of which it was the scene. The Palace has almost entirely passed away, and only the Banqueting House remains to remind us of its former glory. Its story may therefore be said to have come to an end. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Royal Residences of Windsor Castle, St. James's Palace, Carlton House, Kensington Palace, Hampton Court, Buckingham House, and Frogmore, Vol. 3 of 3 Henry having thus obtained possession of the ancient hospital, pulled it down, when, according to tradition, Thomas Cromwell, Lord Essex, gave the design for the present edifice, which was called the King's Manor of St. James. The site of the present park, which was then an extensive marsh, was drained, inclosed, and planted. The king used this newly raised mansion only as a pri vate residence, for he kept his court at the ancient palace of Westminster, as had his illustrious predecessors for many centuries. Cardinal Wolsey at this period lived in almost regal state at the neighbour ing palace of the Archbishops of York, then called York Place, which he had fitted up in a style of great magnificence: His chambers were hung with cloth of gold and silver; his services consisted of massive gold; and he maintained a vast establishment. In the year 1530, the king, enraged at the opposition of the court of Rome to his proposed divorce from Queen Catherine, in which he implicated Wolsey, disgraced his favourite minister, deprived him of the seals and his other civil employments, and seized for his own use not only York Place, but all the furniture and treasure of the ostentatious and unfortunate prelate. Henry removed his court to this newly acquired possession, when it obtained the title of the Royal Palace of Whitehall, from which period to its destruction in 1697, it remained the principal metropolitan palace. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Guide to the Royal Palace of Hampton Court: With a New Catalogue of the Pictures (Abridged From the Author's "Historical Catalogue.") Hampton Court, and it was during her second sojourn here in the following year that, believing she was about to become a mother, a proclamation was prepared announcing from our house at Hampton Court her happy delivery of a Prince - who was never destined to be born! Here, about the same time, she was reconciled to her sister Elizabeth, who after her own accession to the throne frequently took up her abode at Hampton Court, and entertained her Court and distinguished foreigners with hunting parties, balls, banquets, masques and plays. In James I.'s reign this Palace was often visited by the Court, and in January, 1604, the King presided here as Moderator over the famous Hampton Court Conference between the Episcopalians and the Puritans. At Hampton Court Charles I. Spent with his wife and children some of his happiest days, and it was to this Palace that he was brought, as a prisoner, in August, 1647, remaining here three months under a very mild restraint, until he escaped and fled to the Isle of Wight. A few years after we find Oliver Cromwell installed here; while soon after the Restoration Charles II. Arrived here to spend his honeymoon with Catherine of Braganza. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Royal Collection of Paintings at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, Vol. 1: Buckingham Palace; One Hundred Photogravures With an Introduction and Descriptive Text The history of the Royal Collection of paintings is of some length and by no means devoid of eventful interest. As far back as the reign of King Henry VIII. Documentary records exist of the paintings which were in the possession of the Sovereign in 1542, an inventory of this year being preserved in the Record Office. A similar inventory taken in 1547 after the death of Henry VIII. Is preserved in the British Museum. Unfortunately the descriptions given of the paintings are very curt, and leave much to be conjectured but the paintings, or 'painted tables, fall into three classes, Portraits, Religious Subjects, and Historical Subjects. Of the portraits in the first class some few can still be identified in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle or at Hampton Court Palace. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ecclesiastical and Architectural Topography of England The history of the county shews it to have been of more importance in the middle ages than it has been since. In the Saxon period it was the frequent abode of the great Alfred, and of other Saxon kings. Of this period however the remains are very scanty and doubtful; the tower of St. Michael's and the Castle in Oxford seem both to belong nearly to the same time, and as the Castle was not built until after the Norman Conquest, and it is doubtful whether the city had stone walls before that time, it is more reason able to suppose that they are both of the time of William the Conqueror. The tower of Northleigh, and the other slight remains, scarcely appear to be of earlier character. The Norman kings resided much in Oxfordshire, in the palace of Beaumont, the favourite abode of Henry the First.
