Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Royal Gardens The chapters of this book are so arranged that the accompanying plates may present a full garden year from daffodils at Windsor Castle and spring flowering shrubs at Bagshot Park to Chrysanthemums at Claremont and autumn flowers at Sandringham; and the gardens herein depicted include, in one or other, examples of the whole art of garden design as practised in Great Britain during the last three or four centuries. That they are cultivated to-day with a hearty acceptance of every step in progress made in the science of horticulture, articles written by head gardeners on their own methods will show. These articles contain information and suggestions which, I hope, will be found. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Among others to whom grateful thanks are tendered are Mrs. Davidson, Mr. Clark, Mr. Dallimore, and Mr. S. W. Fitzherbert. Some of the chapters have already appeared in the Garden, with the object of making known as widely as possible the importance of the most beauti ful trees and shrubs for English woodland and pleasure-grounds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gallery of Marianne North's Paintings of Plants and Their Homes, Royal Gardens, Kew Such scenes can never be renewed by nature, nor when once effaced can they be pictured to the mind's eye, except by means of such records as this Lady has presented to us, and to posterity, which will thus have even more reason than we have to be grateful for her fortitude as a traveller, her talent and industry as an artist, and her liberality and public-spirit. The architect of the building (which may be described as classical and the principal feature of which is the gallery 50 x 25 ft.) is Jas. Fergusson, Esq., F.R.S., who, actuated by the same generous spirit as his friend the donor, gave the plan and supervised every detail of its construction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew: Historical and Descriptive The fact that nearly three millions of people visit the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew every year, and that the numbers are increasing annually, justifies the assumption that many persons will be glad to learn the history of the greatest botanical establishment in the world, and to know something of its aims, its work, and the leading principles on which it is conducted. It is to meet such a desire that this book has been written. The art of gardening is now so generally and so enthusiastically practised, that on this account also a history and description of Kew should prove acceptable. A Cabinet Minister lately described Kew as "the most beautiful garden in the world." But if an estimate from such a quarter should be considered as not without prejudice, we may turn to the Russian savant, Mr. V. J. Lipsky, who has stated that Kew is not only better than any one of the many other public gardens he has studied in - it is better than all of them put together! The author believes, too, that the story of Kew Gardens has sufficient intrinsic interest to make it worth the telling. The Kew Gardens of the present time are a union of two famous demesnes - Kew Gardens proper and the Royal Gardens of Richmond; and although the sterner events of English history have passed these places by, they are not without their touch of romance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hand-List of Coniferae, Grown in the Royal Botanic Gardens The Hand-list might properly have formed part of that of the "Trees and Shrubs grown in the Arboretum," but so many persons possess collections of Conifers who are not interested in other ligneous plants that there was an obvious convenience in treating them separately. There was the further advantage that this enabled the species which are grown under glass to be included. The natural order, or rather group, Coniferae, is so well defined that it is desirable to enumerate in one list all the species actually in cultivation at Kew. The present Hand-list (first edition) comprises 227 species, with 340 varieties, belonging to 37 genera. Sir Joseph Hooker, the late Director of the Royal Gardens, had contemplated the preparation of a Catalogue of the Kew Pinetum. In view of this he had drawn up a brief review of the literature of the subject, which he has now, after revision, kindly permitted to be used. "In the following list the species are referred to the genera under which they have been placed by the latest authorities, who have revised the Order Coniferae. No one of late years, or perhaps ever, has collected with his own hands so many of these for transmission to England, cultivated them with more suc cess, or distribumd them with more liberality - as the pages of this work to some small extent testify.
