Book excerpt: Excerpt from Round About the Upper Thames HE following chapters were written in the early part of 1914, and were serialised in the Wilts and Gloucestershire Standard in 1915. Since then many changes have taken place, which must have a permanent effect upon the life of the country side. At the same time, such changes are not entirely radical. Work and wages are the principal things affected; the fundamental spirit remains much the same as formerly. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1922, this work details the history and society of the Upper Thames. The following passage is an extract from its preface: 'The scope of the book is principally nature and life, speech, story, tradition, and humorous incident. Whatever of this is contained in the chapters was gleaned on the ground, and is, I believe, for the most part original. In traversing the circle of villages in the area I have attempted to avoid historical references, which are often tedious, though it was obviously impossible to eliminate them altogether. The question always is whether a particular locality is in itself sufficiently interesting to merit attention. This I leave for the reader to decide; his judgment and not mine must determine the issue. Since my object was to portray as much life as possible - not its sufferings and tragedy - I have made free use of persons, and these not fictitious, but real, who inhabited the villages within the memory of those yet living, believing that such records can never become stale or valueless, and that here, as elsewhere, a little fact is more convincing than a goodly array of fiction.' The River Thames takes its name from the Middle English Temese, which is derived from the Celtic name for river. Originating at the Thames Head in Gloucestershire, it is the longest river in England, flowing a total length of 236 miles, out through the Thames Estuary and in to the North Sea. On its journey to open water it passes through the country's capital, London, where it is deep enough to be navigable for ships, thus allowing the city to become a major international trade port.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Tale of the Thames It was the pursuit of this natural but neglected pastime that had brought the two, after an excellent early breakfast at the King's Head, Cirencester, vigorously tramping along the Tetbury Road as far as Thames Head Bridge. From the bridge they descended to the towing path of the nearly dry canal, thence they wandered down the bank into the pleasant meadow, hoping to discover the Source of the Thames. Our two friends had a vague notion Of making a tour of the Thames, partly on foot and partly by boat or canoe, but as yet they had no very definite view on the subject. If this little book finds favour with the public. And tends, in however small a degree, to draw attention to some of those beauties of the Thames which are at present hardly so generally recognised as they deserve to be, I shal be amply rewarded for my labours. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'You will venture into the fringes of the wilderness with the minimum of simple gear, to live with it on its own terms. You will know that one of the sure ways to contentment in this life is a small boat, a fair wind, and a new coast to explore.' Dinghy cruising is a wonderful way to experience nature and new coastlines at close quarters and low cost. Sailing where larger boats cannot reach and sleeping under canvas onboard or ashore, this is boating taken right back to the basics, and all the better for that. This guide, updated and expanded for its second edition, is invaluable for all aspiring or already-enthusiastic dinghy cruisers, showing how to get started and how to expand your horizons. The information and advice is interwoven with wonderfully evocative stories of the author's adventures afloat, from idyllic weeks pottering around secluded rivers and coastlines to hair-raising voyages to remote islands. The text covers: finding a good boat; fitting out for daysailing; boatcraft under engine and oar; mooring and anchoring; preparing for open water; out at sea; coastal navigation; dinghy homemaking; keeping comfortable and safe. And for this new edition, an account of the author's first capsize, new material on electronics and clothing, and more information on boat designs. Illustrated throughout with inspirational colour photos and helpful illustrations, this book shows just why small boats are the perfect passport to remote and beautiful places.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on the long tradition of folklore study, Roger deV. Renwick examines three genres: traditional English folksongs, local songs of regional interest, and working-class poetry. In the span of time that extends from the eighteenth to the twentieth century, he finds govern world views underlying a large sampling of poems related by common language, imagery, or topic, and then shows how these world views relate to the everyday lives and beliefs of the poetry's makers and users. There is, in addition, a pattern of historical continuity that links the rural folksongs of the eighteenth century with the part-rural, part-urban local songs of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and with the fully urban working-class poetry of the present day. English Folk Poetry is an immensely important contribution to folklore scholarship in its examination of contemporary working-class poetry, in its approach to questions of tacit meaning, and in its exploration of the relationship of inferential meanings to real, everyday lives.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from River Legends: Or Father Thames and Father Rhine On the particular day of which I speak, I had rambled about with those boys I knew, gathered as much pleasure as I could from the memories which clung around the precincts of the old college, and afterwards strolled out along the banks of the river in the direction of Surly. The weather being rather hot, although even ing was approaching, I thought it well to halt in the immediate neighbourhood of Surly Hall, and having seated myself in the shadiest place I could find, began to think over the various Fourths of June and Elec tion Saturdays which I had witnessed in that famous locality, until I not unnaturally fell fast asleep. I do not know how long I remained in this comfortable state, but I was suddenly aroused by the sound of voices, and immediately opened my eyes and looked around to dis cover the quarter from which they proceeded. It was not long before I was enlightened upon this point. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
