Book Synopsis 'Ain el-Gedida by : Nicola Aravecchia
Download or read book 'Ain el-Gedida written by Nicola Aravecchia and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2019-03-01 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth volume in the Amheida series, ‘Ain el-Gedida: 2006-2008 Excavations of a Late Antique Site in Egypt's Western Desert (Amheida IV) presents the systematic record and interpretation of the archaeological evidence from the excavations at ‘Ain el-Gedida, a fourth-century rural settlement in Egypt's Dakleh Oasis uniquely important for the study of early Egyptian Christianity and previously known only from written sources. Nicola Aravecchia (Washington University), the Deputy Field Director of NYU's Amheida Excavations, offers a history of the site and its excavations, followed by an integrated topographical and archaeological interpretation of the site and its significance for the history of Christianity in Egypt. In the second half of the volume a team of international experts presents catalogs and interpretations of the archaeological finds, including ceramics (Delphine Dixneuf, CRNS), coins (David M. Ratzan, NYU), ostraca and graffiti (Roger S. Bagnall, NYU and Dorota Dzierzbicka, University of Warsaw), small finds (Dorota Dzierzbicka, University of Warsaw), and zooarcheological remains (Pamela J. Crabtree, NYU and Douglas Campana).

Book Synopsis Mesopotamian Sculpture in Colour by : Astrid Nunn
Download or read book Mesopotamian Sculpture in Colour written by Astrid Nunn and published by PeWe-Verlag. This book was released on 2020-12-31 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We can now be sure that Mesopotamian sculpture of the human form was typically coloured. Our project, which set out to reconstruct the polychromy of Mesopotamian stone statues dating from the fourth to the first millennium BCE, is a part of a slow shift to incorporate more visual evidence in research about colour and perception in the ancient world that has long been dominated by ethno-linguistic studies. Our scientifically grounded reconstructions serve as a prelude to a more comprehensive exploration of the materiality and aesthetics of Mesopotamian sculpture, which open many windows onto historical, cultural, and symbolic issues. In this study, we trace the chronological development of the use of colours and consider why they changed over time. The manner in which colours served as social markers - of gender, ethnicity and class for example - are explored from the material culture and textual perspectives. When used to describe hair, skin, and garments, Sumerian and Akkadian words for colour denote more than just physical properties. They also evoke qualities such as lightness or darkness, dullness or glossiness, and encode specific symbolic values that impinge on many aspects of society. In all cultures, the notion of skin colour is subject to social concepts, prejudices, and ideals, and is thus a matter of convention. Our discovery that the face and body in particular were so vibrantly coloured provides an entirely new and unexpected view of ancient Near Eastern effigies. Through such luminous, radiant and lucid colours, we are now able to recognise the true faces of the statues, and to visualise what was considered beautiful and acceptable to the gods.
Book Synopsis Catalogue de Timbres de France 2019 by : Spink Maury
Download or read book Catalogue de Timbres de France 2019 written by Spink Maury and published by Spink Books. This book was released on 2018-09-01 with total page 1140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A catalogue made by collectors for collectors. This year the Spink Maury Catalogue, heir to the prestigious Maury, Ceres and Dallay catalogues, continues its work of research, compiled over generations of philately. It covers all French stamps from 1849 to the present day, offering hundreds of changes – with oddities, new varieties and discoveries presented, as always, in an exceptional way. Included in the new material is the continuation of the monographic studies, presenting a stamp per page with all varieties known until the First World War; a redesign of types Merson and Pasteur; and a specialised part devoted to Marianne de Beaujard, reviewed in depth. In addition the section on current usage stamps (TUC) is fully updated following feedback from our contributors and readers. France has one of the most beautiful philatelic legacies in the world, and we are pleased to be its modest ambassador to the numerous international readers who join us each year. “Layout and coverage are sumptuous … The trite phrase “mine of information” does not begin to do justice to this immense achievement. To any collector of France beyond the elementary stage, this would be a bargain at twice the official retail price … Highly recommended. ….an absolute must for collectors of French stamps…” Michael Round, Journal of the France & Colonies Philatelic Society
