Book excerpt: The interaction between rotating and stationary parts affects the flow field inside both components, modifying the machine performance in terms of operating stability, structural vibrations, noise and pressure pulsations. The aim of this book is to improve the understanding of the rotor-stator interaction phenomena with an extensive in-depth investigation of their characteristics, origin, development and effects on the machine performance. An unusual acoustical approach, aimed at identifying a possible connection between noise emissions and inner fluid-dynamics, was proposed and combined with a PIV experimental analysis in order to study the unsteady flow phenomena developing inside the pump vaned diffuser. These analysis, coupled with a numerical analysis on the same turbomachine, allowed to analyze in-depth the effects of the rotor-stator interaction on the machine flow field and hence on its performance.

Radial turbomachines possess their own distinctive characteristics, and present the engineer with as full a range of complexities as any fluid flow problem. This book describes the current technology and design methods for centrifugal compressors and radial turbines working in compressible flow. These are of particular relevance to gas turbine engines, internal combustion engine turbochargers, process compressors and cryogenic expanders. The aerodynamic design of the turbomachine is preliminary design to the specification of blade forms and computational fluid dynamic analysis of vane and blade passage flows. The treatment throughout is modern, with full recognition of current computer-aided design methods. However throughout the book a clear separation is made between the fundamental gas dynamics and the empiricism necessary to close the gap between theory and practice in situations of such complexity. Computer program listings for preliminary design are included. The problems posed by specific applications are dealt with in details: for example, techniques for the suppression of surge in centrifugal compressors and a consequent widening of the operating range, and the problems of pulse operation of radial turbines as encountered in turbocharger applications. The book contains comprehensive surveys of the literature in all these fields.

Stator loss is determined by a viscious loss model; and stator vane end-clearance leakage effects are determined by a clearance-flow model. Rotor loss coefficients were obtained by analyzing the experimental data from a turbine rotor previously tested with six stators having throat areas from 20 to 144 percent of design area and were correlated with stator-to-rotor throat area ratio. An incidence loss model was selected to obtain best agreement with experimental results. Predicted turbine performance is compared with experimental results for the design rotor as well as with results for extended and cutback versions of the rotor. Sample calculations were made to show the effects of stator vane end-clearance leakage. (Author).
