Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of Western Choral Music explores the various genres, key composers, and influential works essential to the development of the western choral tradition. Author Chester L. Alwes divides this exploration into two volumes which move from Medieval music and the Renaissance era up to the 21st century. Volume II begins at the transition from the Classical era to the Romantic, with an examination of the major genres common to both periods. Exploring the oratorio, part song, and dramatic music, it also offers a thorough discussion of the choral symphony from Beethoven to Mahler, through to the present day. It then delves into the choral music of the twentieth century through discussions of the major compositional approaches and philosophies that proliferated over the course of the century, from impressionism to serialism, neo-classicism to modernism, minimalism, and the avant-garde. It also considers the emerging tendency towards nationalistic composition amongst composers such as Bartók and Stravinsky, and discusses in great detail the contemporary music of the United States, and Great Britain. Framing discussion within the political, religious, cultural, philosophical, aesthetic, and technological contexts of each era, A History of Western Choral Music offers readers specialized insight into major composers and works while providing a cohesive understanding of choral music's place in Western history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you want to make your Sunday morning services come alive, this remarkably inventive volume is exactly what you've been searching for. It's a terrific library of resources that takes the weekly lectionary texts and puts them into the mouths, ears, and hearts of the people. For each week there's a complete selection of written liturgical material (calls to worship, litanies, prayers, and benedictions) to supplement and strengthen your worship planning -- all specifically tailored to the day's scripture readings. But that's not all! There's also a wealth of musical suggestions, including hymns chosen from a wide variety of denominational hymnals, psalm settings, and appropriate anthems for the choir. You'll even find ideas that draw upon the other creative arts (dance, art, drama) to glorify God and enhance worship. This is an outstanding exegesis of prayer, praise, and thanksgiving and Schifrin's fertile imagination produces practical worship material that engages the congregation and encourages active participation. Amy C. Schifrin, the Seminary Pastor and Dean of the Chapel at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley, California, has been a parish pastor in Saskatchewan, Arizona, North Dakota, South Dakota, and California. She holds a master's degree in music theory and composition from Northwestern University and an M.Div. degree from Luther Northwestern Seminary. Schifrin is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the Arts, Worship, and Proclamation at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. Her other published works include hymns and psalm settings as well as articles and book reviews in Currents, Word and World, Dialog, and The Lutheran. Martha Shonkwiler is currently studying Art Therapy in the post-masters certificate program at Sonoma State University and the Spiritual Direction diploma program at San Francisco Theological Seminary to strengthen her emphasis of Healing through Art and Spirituality. She is a recent graduate of Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary, where she earned her M.A. degree in Christian Ministry. A former elementary schoolteacher, Shonkwiler has participated on mission trips to Indonesia and El Salvador, and has also been active in ministry to the Hmong community in Fresno, California.

Book excerpt: On the island continent of Ea it is a dark time of chaos and war. Morjin, immortal fallen angel and Lord of Lies, seeks to enslave the entire world. His dreaded assassins are everywhere and land after land falls under his evil power. The one thing that has the potential to destroy him is an object that has been lost for ages: the fabulous Lightstone that legend tells was crafted by the ancient Star people. A call is sent out by one of the major rulers still free of Morjin's grip to all those who oppose the dreaded sorcerer. It is nothing less than a quest to find the Lightstone and give Men hope after ages of despair. It is a quest that none have seen the like of in ten generations. And most believe is doomed to fail. What hero is man enough, brave enough...or foolish enough to embark on such a mad quest? Valashu Elahad, the seventh and youngest Valeri prince of the royal house of Mesh is such a man. With his faithful companion Maram by his side Valashu will journey to the farthest reaches of Ea to try and reclaim this mystical object, to free the world of Morjin's evil and save his people from sure destruction. Along the way he will discover truths about friendship, courage...and love. And the terrible truth about the being who threatens to sunder his world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have written essays on art, architecture and literature for New English Review under Theodore Dalrymple. People think we should follow and as it's the facebook age write in little bits or compete with reality TV by telling all about us. I write traditional-style poems with, I hope, meaning. A publisher described me as The Rebel Poet because I ignore literary fashion and write in my own way.I like travelling and have been to many parts of the country, towns, cities and villages. My method for finding interesting local places is to ring the local tourist office and when I arrive I go to a pub and talk to local people who know the interesting places. I take a lot of photographs of these places and a very small example is in the Gallery on my website. I am taking notes for a future large volume of Literary Essays which will range from medieval Literature to the twentieth century. I studied English literature, Dramatic Structure and Playwriting, Film Structure and script writing. I find that when I am busy a break in a traditional pub is refreshing and you return to work with new ideas and a fresh view of what you are doing. People ask what one's influences are: I try to write in my own way. But a lifetime of reading leaves a mark.
