Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume focuses on emerging "rooms for manoeuvre" in the socialist societies of Central and Eastern Europe after the Second World War. Unlike in other works, these areas of activity are not viewed as isolated spheres where citizens could act independently from political and societal constraints. They are rather conceptualized here as geographical, social or institutional spaces whose existence was either outside of political control or more or less intentionally allowed by authorities and other decision-makers. The contributions investigate how East Germans, Poles, Romanians, Slovaks and Czechs coped with the limitations of socialist reality. How did they adopt and successfully adapt given norms to their own specific interests? To what extent were the resulting "rooms for manoeuvre" not only essential aspects of the state socialist system, but even necessary to stabilize it?

Book excerpt: Canada's thirty-four million people and trillion dollar GDP don't occupy much space on a planet of seven billion whose economy is now worth forty trillion dollars. The country is not a lightweight yet, but certainly its position as a power is shrinking. What does that mean for the country's foreign policy and its various players? What room is left, and for whom?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the webs of vulnerability in methodological decision-making that illustrate the deceptive strength of qualitative research. Each chapter will resonate with readers differently as they read themselves into the tensions and tangles of qualitative research when confronted with the challenges of establishing methodological frameworks for educational and social enquiry. The authors are postgraduate, early career researchers and supervisors who analyse their methodological encounters with the nimble, fluid, messy and iterative processes of qualitative research. The book flows structurally from positioning the researcher within these processes to the manoeuvring of self across necessarily selective social science disciplines in education, arts and humanities. It rejuvenates the pioneering spirit, the sense of mission and innovativeness of qualitative research.

Small can be beautiful. It can also be convenient and livable, with the ideas and inspiration in this handsomely illustrated guide.

Book excerpt: The only Arabic voice to have witnessed the Ottoman conquest of Cairo, Ibn Iyās, is an eminent historical source for the late Mamluk period. This book is the first to take stock of the author's complete works, approaching him through an examination of his narrative voice and writing strategies. Tracing Ibn Iyās's working process by compilation analysis, it shows how the author adapted his representations of Egyptian history to his writing projects and audience. Ibn Iyās's ways of worldmaking are shaped deeply by beliefs, biases and intellectual trends as well as the impact of the social and historical context the author wrote in. Knowing these conditioning factors allows to understand his presentation of history as an individual voice of his time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There were eighty of them. They were young, clever and cultivated; they were barely in their thirties when Adolf Hitler came to power. Their university studies in law, economics, linguistics, philosophy and history marked them out for brilliant careers. They chose to join the repressive bodies of the Third Reich, especially the Security Service (SD) and the Nazi Party’s elite protection unit, the SS. They theorized and planned the extermination of twenty million individuals of allegedly ‘inferior’ races. Most of them became members of the paramilitary death squads known as Einsatzgruppen and participated in the slaughter of over a million people. Based on extensive archival research, Christian Ingrao tells the gripping story of these children of the Great War, focusing on the networks of fellow activists, academics and friends in which they moved, studying the way in which they envisaged war and the ‘world of enemies’ which, in their view, threatened them. The mechanisms of their political commitment are revealed, and their roles in Nazism and mass murder. Thanks to this pioneering study, we can now understand how these men came to believe what they did, and how these beliefs became so destructive. The history of Nazism, shows Ingrao, is also a history of beliefs in which a powerful military machine was interwoven with personal experiences, fervour, anguish, utopia and cruelty.

This book was released on 2016-01-18 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this two-part biography, Field Marshal Wavell, charts the rise of the 1st Viscount Allenby, from a lowly cavalry lieutenant to the rank of Field Marshal. Allenby was commissioned into the 6th Dragoons in 1880, well-liked by his contemporaries but never considered overly talented. However under fire and in contact with the enemy during the Boer War, Allenby’s talents began to come to the fore; tough and disciplined, he was rapidly promoted with each battlefield success. Afflicted by a rabid temper, which led to towering rages at subordinates, he was nicknamed “The Bull”. When Europe descended into chaos and the horrors of the First World War in 1914, Allenby was given command of the only British cavalry brigade to be sent to France in 1914. The cavalry distinguished itself in the chaotic fighting of 1914, particularly at the First Battle of Ypres. As trench warfare removed any possibility of a war of movement, Allenby transferred to command of V Corps and then to lead Third Army. Allenby’s tactics including frequent counterattacks led to heavy casualties would lead to his transfer to Egypt. Allenby organised, planned and executed the campaign across Egypt and the Palestine that threw the Ottoman army back all the way Aleppo before the armistice in 1918. Allenby would stay on in Egypt as High Commissioner between 1919-1925, dealing with the fluid and tricky politics of the area before his eventual retirement. “Here is a piece of work well done and apt reading for the times. General Wavell is at once the pupil and successor of his great Palestine commander, and is qualified also by sobriety, detachment of view, and a gift of clear, concise writing. Three factors have combined...the skill of the very competent biographer; the crescendo of interest, culminating in one of the most brilliantly conceived victories in history, and, last and most, the rugged splendour of Allenby’s character.”—SIR RONALD STORRS, in The Spectator.
