Book excerpt: The Personal Chronicle of a Flight Engineer of a Lancaster in Wartime. Why, at 80 years of age, did I write this book? My fellow Flight Engineers are rarely mentioned, except occasionally in passing, in historical war books. Our role was barely acknowledged in the film of the Dam Busters. This book is dedicated to all my fellow Flight Engineers, the unsung heroes of Bomber Command.

Book excerpt: To his followers, L Ron Hubbard was a war hero and spiritual leader who served his country with distinction in World War II, suffering terrible injuries in the line of duty before miraculously healing himself with his revolutionary mental techniques - Dianetics and Scientology. RON THE WAR HERO examines the truth behind the legend and asks some awkward questions. What if there were no injuries? What if Hubbard was not, in fact, a war hero at all? What if his time in the military was marked not by bravery but by incompetence? By hubris rather than heroism? As Scientology's own spokesman has admitted, it would mean that Scientology is based on a lie. It would mean that Hubbard's supposed recovery never happened and that his claims about the foundations of Scientology are fraudulent. Drawing on previously unpublished documents and US government records, RON THE WAR HERO is a forensic and devastating portrait of the deceit at the heart of Scientology - a lie that has ruined so many lives, and persists to this day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does religion shape the modern battlefield? Ron E. Hassner proposes that religion acts as a force multiplier, both enabling and constraining military operations. This is true not only for religiously radicalized fighters but also for professional soldiers. In the last century, religion has influenced modern militaries in the timing of attacks, the selection of targets for assault, the zeal with which units execute their mission, and the ability of individual soldiers to face the challenge of war. Religious ideas have not provided the reasons why conventional militaries fight, but religious practices have influenced their ability to do so effectively. In Religion on the Battlefield, Hassner focuses on the everyday practice of religion in a military context: the prayers, rituals, fasts, and feasts of the religious practitioners who make up the bulk of the adversaries, bystanders, and observers during armed conflicts. To show that religious practices have influenced battlefield decision making, Hassner draws most of his examples from major wars involving Western militaries. They include British soldiers in the trenches of World War I, U.S. pilots in World War II, and U.S. Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan. Hassner shows that even modern, rational, and bureaucratized military organizations have taken—and must take—religious practice into account in the conduct of war.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a decade, Ron Capps, serving as both a senior military intelligence officer and as a Foreign Service officer for the U.S. Department of State, was witness to war crimes, ethnic cleansing, and genocide. From government atrocities in Kosovo, to the brutal cruelties perpetrated in several conflicts in central Africa, the wars in both Aghanistan and Iraq, and culminating in genocide in Darfur, Ron acted as an intelligence collector and reporter but was diplomatically restrained from taking preventative action in these conflicts. The cumulative effect of these experiences, combined with the helplessness of his role as an observer, propelled him into a deep depression and a long bout with PTSD, which nearly caused him to take his own life. Seriously Not All Right is a memoir that provides a unique perspective of a professional military officer and diplomat who suffered (and continues to suffer) from PTSD. His story, and that of his recovery and his newfound role as founder and teacher of the Veterans Writing Project, is an inspiration and a sobering reminder of the cost of all wars, particularly those that appeared in the media and to the general public as merely sidelines in the unfolding drama of world events.

Book excerpt: Praise for Ron's Road to Wealth "Long-term investors will learn much from Ron Muhlenkamp's thoughtful reflections on what he has learned about investing over a thirty-year period of successful practice." --Milton Friedman "Ron Muhlenkamp has thought long and hard and successfully about investments for many years. He has learned not to be misled by the distortions that inflation brings to normal returns. He has also learned the important understanding that volatility is not the risk that should concern long-term investors. His book will help readers to do better." --Allan H. Meltzer, Professor of Political Economy and Public Policy, Carnegie Mellon University "Ron Muhlenkamp has one of the most original, insightful minds in the financial world today. His record is superb. You will find his book a richly rewarding read." --Steve Forbes, President and Chief Executive Officer of Forbes and Editor in Chief of Forbes magazine "Conventional wisdom says that mutual fund managers can't beat the market; Ron Muhlenkamp's record proves that he can. Ron's Road to Wealth offers a bounty of snapshots of the insightful thinking that has allowed Muhlenkamp to better his peers with remarkable consistency. While many on Wall Street make their living adding to the confusion of the investment process, Muhlenkamp cuts through the clutter to reveal the commonsense logic underneath the surface. If you're tired of conventional investment results, you'll relish this book's unconventional wisdom." --Don Phillips, Managing Director of Morningstar, Inc. "Ron Muhlenkamp is virtually the only commentator in today's investment world who makes a compelling and commonsense case for active investment management. His principles have exactly what you look for in the investment world: they modestly underpromise and have an interesting history of overdelivering." --Bob Veres, Publisher and Editor of Inside Information

Book excerpt: How a massive agricultural reform movement led by northern farmers before the Civil War recast Americans' relationships to market forces and the state. Recipient of The Center for Civil War Research's 2021 Wiley-Silver Book Prize, Winner of the Theodore Saloutos Memorial Award by the Agricultural History Society In this sweeping look at rural society from the American Revolution to the Civil War, Ariel Ron argues that agricultural history is central to understanding the nation's formative period. Upending the myth that the Civil War pitted an industrial North against an agrarian South, Grassroots Leviathan traces the rise of a powerful agricultural reform movement spurred by northern farmers. Ron shows that farming dominated the lives of most Americans through almost the entire nineteenth century and traces how middle-class farmers in the "Greater Northeast" built a movement of semipublic agricultural societies, fairs, and periodicals that fundamentally recast Americans' relationship to market forces and the state.
