Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The name Vilma Banky is often relegated to dusty history books, fated to be mentioned only in passing. Today, her fame is eclipsed by the men she worked with, and her life remains a mystery to even the most ardent silent film fan. But she was a superstar, plain and simple.Movie mogul Sam Goldwyn saw in her what millions of audiences around the world would soon embrace - the soft, milk-white hands, corn-silk hair, and effortless femininity. Charlie Chaplin was a fan, as was John Gilbert, President Calvin Coolidge, Adolf Hitler, and F. Scott Fitzgerald. The story of Vilma Banky is almost too fantastic, but underneath it all, given fame and opportunity, she struggled to make things right. Goldwyn's long obfuscated Hungarian Rhapsody reemerges from years of misconceptions to reveal what made her such an international sensation in the '20s.

Book Synopsis From Radio to Television by : Vincent Terrace
Download or read book From Radio to Television written by Vincent Terrace and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-10-21 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early years of television relied in part on successful narratives of another medium, as studios adapted radio programs like Boston Blackie and Defense Attorney to the small screen. Many shows were adapted more than once, like the radio program Blondie, which inspired six television adaptations and 28 theatrical films. These are but a few of the 1,164 programs covered in this volume. Each program entry contains a detailed story line, years of broadcast, performer and character casts and principal production credits where possible. Two appendices ("Almost a Transition" and "Television to Radio") and a performer's index conclude the book. This first-of-its-kind encyclopedia covers many little-known programs that have rarely been discussed in print (e.g., Real George, based on Me and Janie; Volume One, based on Quiet, Please; and Galaxy, based on X Minus One). Covered programs include The Great Gildersleeve, Howdy Doody, My Friend Irma, My Little Margie, Space Patrol and Vic and Sade.
Book Synopsis Reruns on File by : Donald G. Godfrey
Download or read book Reruns on File written by Donald G. Godfrey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than half a century, broadcast recordings have reflected an important aspect of our culture and history. An increasing number of archivists and private collectors have restored and exchanged radio and television materials. However, despite the awareness of these primary resource materials, there is still some reluctance to utilize this aural and visual history resource. A part of this reluctance is due to the fact that little is known about the existence of many collections throughout the nation. This volume provides a comprehensive directory of electronic media archives in the United States and Canada. It describes each collection, focusing on its speciality, providing the serious researcher with ready access information to these electronic media program resources. Focusing on both private and institutional collections, it is organized by state and city with indexes to provide the scholar with subject and location of specific topics of interest.

Book Synopsis Visions of Yesterday by : Jeffrey Richards
Download or read book Visions of Yesterday written by Jeffrey Richards and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-21 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Film is an important source of social history, as well as having been a popular art form from the early twentieth century. This study shows how a society, consciously or unconsciously, is mirrored in its cinema. It considers the role of the cinema in dramatizing popular beliefs and myths, and takes three case studies – American populism, British imperialism, German Nazism – to explain how a nation’s pressures, tensions and hopes come through in its films. Examining the American cinema is accomplished by analysing the careers of three great directors, John Ford, Frank Capra and Leo McCarey, while the British and German cinemas are studied by theme. The analysis of the British Empire as seen in film broke exciting new ground with a pioneering account of ‘the cinema of Empire’ when it was first published in 1973. With full filmographies and a carefully selected bibliography it is an outstanding work of reference and its lively approach makes it a delight to read. Reviews of the original edition: ‘A work of considerable force and considerable wit.’ – Clive James, Observer ‘...a work that is original, mentally stimulating and most pleasurable to read.’ – Focus on Film

Book Synopsis Harps Are Not for Angels by : Aida Mulieri Dagort
Download or read book Harps Are Not for Angels written by Aida Mulieri Dagort and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 1999-07-13 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up in a large Italian family, Aida Mulieri-Dagort wanted to be a professional musician all her life. Most of her family members played instruments as music was their daily bread, and Aida was nurtured in a rich musical environment. Thus began her journey through much struggle and determination as she accomplished her goals of success. Aida became a musician under contract with two motion picture studios as a member of their recording orchestras during the heyday of Hollywood film scoring - the 1940s through the early 1960s. Harps Are Not For Angels is her story of that accomplishment and the joys as well as the pressures it imposed on her life. Musicians under contract to the studios were in a prized position in the profession, and the envy of many players who had not made the grade to earn a chair in one of those orchestras. The politics and pressures of this professional work were on a high level and your job could be at stake at any moment. Meanwhile Aida doubled as a wife and mother in an era when women were expected to do little else. Along the way Aida chronicles the professionals in the film music business she encountered, and relates stories involving the history of Los Angeles and its connection to the music world at the time. The city was a cultural cornucopia at the end of the second World War, as many artists sought refuge from political oppression, and Hollywood reaped the benefits. Although it was a good life, in the stresses and high demand of such professional work, Aida found herself diagnosed with breast cancer. Her recovery and subsequent retirement from the music business inspired her to explore her many other talents such as teaching children with learning disabilities, and fine art painting which she did for her own enjoyment. But for Aida, nothing was as exciting nor as stimulating as her career in the motion picture studios of Hollywoods golden era as related here in her experiences both informative, challenging, and insightful. After reading her story you will see that in fact Harps Are Not For Angels.
