Book excerpt: The industry's longest-running publication for baseball analysts and fantasy leaguers, Ron Shandler's Baseball Forecaster, published annually since 1986, is the first book to approach prognostication by breaking performance down into its component parts. Rather than predicting batting average, for instance, this resource looks at the elements of skill that make up any given batter's ability to distinguish between balls and strikes, his propensity to make contact with the ball, and what happens when he makes contact—reverse engineering those skills back into batting average. The result is an unparalleled forecast of baseball abilities and trends for the upcoming season and beyond.

Book excerpt: The 1930 Major League baseball season was both marvelous and horrendous, great for hitters, embarrassing for pitchers. In totality it was just this side of insane as an outlier among all seasons. Major League Baseball began with the founding of the National League in 1876. In the 145 seasons since then, one season stands out as unique for the astounding nature of hitting: 1930. A flipside of 1968’s “Year of the Pitcher,” when the great St. Louis Cardinals Bob Gibson compiled a 1.12 earned run average and Detroit Tigers Denny McLain won 31 games, the 1930 season was when the batters reigned supreme. During this incredible season, more than one hundred players batted .300, the entire National League averaged .300, ten players hit 30 or more home runs, and some of the greatest individual performances established all-time records. From New York Giants Bill Terry’s .401 average—the last National Leaguer to hit over .400—to the NL-record 56 home runs and major league–record 192 runs batted in by Chicago Cubs Hack Wilson, the 1930 season is a wild, sometimes unbelievable, often wacky baseball story. Breaking down the anomaly of the season and how each team fared, veteran journalist Lew Freeman tells the story of a one-off year unlike any other. While the greats stayed great, and though some pitchers did hold their own—with seven winning 20 or more games, including 28 by Philadelphia Athletics’ Lefty Grove and 25 by Cleveland Indians’ Wes Ferrell—Freedman shares anecdotes about those players that excelled in 1930, and only 1930. More than ninety years later, 1930 offers insight into a season that still stands the test of time for batting excellence.

Download or read book Bias written by Bernard Goldberg and published by Regnery Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-21 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his nearly thirty years at CBS News, Emmy Award–winner Bernard Goldberg earned a reputation as one of the preeminent reporters in the television news business. When he looked at his own industry, however, he saw that the media far too often ignored their primary mission: objective, disinterested reporting. Again and again he saw that they slanted the news to the left. For years Goldberg appealed to reporters, producers, and network executives for more balanced reporting, but no one listened. The liberal bias continued. In this classic number one New York Times bestseller, Goldberg blew the whistle on the news business, showing exactly how the media slant their coverage while insisting they’re just reporting the facts.

Baseball Prospectus 2016 once again provides fantasy players and insiders alike with prescient PECOTA projections, which Sports Illustrated has called “perhaps the game’s most accurate projection model.” Still, stats are just numbers if you don’t see the larger context, and Baseball Prospectus brings together an elite team of analysts to provide the definitive look at all thirty teams—their players, their prospects and their managers—to explain away flukes, hot streaks, injury-tainted numbers and park effects. Nearly every major-league team has sought the advice of current or former Prospectus analysts, and readers of Baseball Prospectus 2016 will understand what all those insiders have been raving about. In a book that sports personality Ken Tremendous calls “The tip of the nerd spear,” the team at Baseball Prospectus is proud to bring the following improvements to the 2016 Annual: Two full years of projections—PECOTA lines for 2016 and 2017 Historical Peak MPH added for major-league pitchers Deserved Run Average (DRA) added for major-league pitchers cFIP added for major-league and minor-league pitchers Pitcher WARP redesigned, utilizing DRA and cFIP for all pitchers Revised cFIP-driven PECOTA pitching projections Catcher-specific defensive stats for all catchers Double-A and above Outfield assists and catcher defense integrated in FRAA and WARP Ballpark schematic and wall height study for every stadium Hit List, finance, and farm system ranking graphs for each team Every organization’s key front office personnel and Baseball Prospectus alumni identified
Download or read book Fantasy Expert written by Ron Shandler and published by Triumph Books (IL). This book was released on 2024-02-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An entertaining and incisive chronicle from one of the foremost authorities in fantasy baseball Ron Shandler is a self-described rotoholic. In the beginning, he hoarded newspaper box scores and pored over every number at his disposal. Then came the compulsion to create his own numbers. A monthly newsletter expanded into an annual Baseball Forecaster book, which spawned a media company, websites, tournaments, and more. Part memoir, part madcap history, Fantasy Expert is a fascinating and wide-ranging look at the modern growth and development of the game that went from cottage industry to national obsession. In chronicling his own escalating journey from rotisserie baseball hobbyist to professional authority, Shandler tells parallel tales of the rise of fantasy sports, the expanding baseball information industry, the increasingly sophisticated technology employed to gain an edge, and the fellow rotoholics who make it all possible. He also delves into the impact of fantasy baseball on the sport of baseball itself. Written with humor, honesty, and a deep passion for baseball, this is a must-read for anyone interested in the history, progression, and future of fantasy baseball.
