Book excerpt: Excerpt from Romance of the Insect World Usually the formation of the larva is complete soon after the egg is laid, sometimes the process lingers on throughout the winter, and Should unfavourable circumstances supervene, it is surmised that it may be delayed for years. Experiments prove that eggs may be exposed to intense cold, such indeed as to solidify their contents, and yet remain capable of hatching. The growth of the embryo* within the egg may be watched. This is easily perceptible in the case of 'a transparent egg, by holding it against the light, or by examining it through a strong magnifier. Day by day the germ steadily increases from a tiny speck, until it 'is too large for the egg to contain, and it breaks through the now tight Skin or shell, and emerges into the world a living and active being - 4the grub or larva. Book Synopsis A Child of Nature by : Robert Williams Buchanan

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Child of Nature: A Romance On the afternoon of a summer day, a small schooner yacht, closely reefed, made her appearance off the mouth of Loch Uribol, a long and lonely sea fjord in the remote north of Scotland, and while beating to and fro in the open sea, in the midst of the southerly squalls from the neighbouring mountains, hoisted the inverted red flag to the foremast, as a signal that the parties on board were in need of assistance. It had been a dark, dry day, with the wind blowing fresh from the south-east very steady and strong, and the yacht, a tiny thing of fifteen or sixteen tons, with a small cockpit, had beaten round Cape Wrath at early dawn, across the tossing waters which divide the dark serrated peaks of Scotland from the far-off Norwegian shores. Lightly as a bird she had bounded over the great rollers of the sea, splashing the foam over herself from stem to stern, but seldom taking on board a drop of 'green.' The wind was almost steady ahead, so that her progress eastward was slow indeed. The time slipped by, however. Download or read book Insect Media written by Jussi Parikka and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early nineteenth century, when entomologists first popularized the unique biological and behavioral characteristics of insects, technological innovators and theorists have proposed insects as templates for a wide range of technologies. In Insect Media, Jussi Parikka analyzes how insect forms of social organization-swarms, hives, webs, and distributed intelligence-have been used to structure modern media technologies and the network society, providing a radical new perspective on the interconnection of biology and technology. Through close engagement with the pioneering work of insect ethologists, including Jakob von Uexküll and Karl von Frisch, posthumanist philosophers, media theorists, and contemporary filmmakers and artists, Parikka develops an insect theory of media, one that conceptualizes modern media as more than the products of individual human actors, social interests, or technological determinants. They are, rather, profoundly nonhuman phenomena that both draw on and mimic the alien lifeworlds of insects. Deftly moving from the life sciences to digital technology, from popular culture to avant-garde art and architecture, and from philosophy to cybernetics and game theory, Parikka provides innovative conceptual tools for exploring the phenomena of network society and culture. Challenging anthropocentric approaches to contemporary science and culture, Insect Media reveals the possibilities that insects and other nonhuman animals offer for rethinking media, the conflation of biology and technology, and our understanding of, and interaction with, contemporary digital culture.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grocer Greatheart: A Tropical Romance Though, of course, he must have been on the ship when it left Sydney, it was quite a week before I noticed Mr. John Greatheart. But he was the sort of man that you would only notice if he stood on his head - a feat, I feel sure, he would never have contemplated. And even in that contingency you would have merely wondered why so ordinary a man should do so extraordinary a thing. But to me, a tired sub-editor, sent a trip to Japan by my Sydney directors, more for the health I needed to recapture than for the articles on trade conditions in the Orient that I was commissioned to write, all the passengers on the Boomerang seemed, at least at first, depressingly ordinary.
