Book Synopsis Heraldry, Pageantry and Social Display in Medieval England by : Peter R. Coss
Download or read book Heraldry, Pageantry and Social Display in Medieval England written by Peter R. Coss and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discussion of display through a range of artefacts and in a variety of contexts: family and lineage, social distinction and aspiration, ceremony and social bonding, and the expression of power and authority. Medieval culture was intensely visual. Although this has long been recognised by art historians and by enthusiasts for particular media, there has been little attempt to study social display as a subject in its own right. And yet, display takes us directly into the values, aspirations and, indeed, anxieties of past societies. In this illustrated volume a group of experts address a series of interrelated themes around the issue of display and do so in a waywhich avoids jargon and overly technical language. Among the themes are family and lineage, social distinction and aspiration, ceremony and social bonding, and the expression of power and authority. The media include monumental effigies, brasses, stained glass, rolls of arms, manuscripts, jewels, plate, seals and coins. Book Synopsis Eight Thirteenth-century Rolls of Arms in French and Anglo-Norman Blazon by : Gerard J. Brault
Download or read book Eight Thirteenth-century Rolls of Arms in French and Anglo-Norman Blazon written by Gerard J. Brault and published by Penn State University Press. This book was released on 1972 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: True heraldry, that is, "the systematic use of hereditary devices centred on the shield," is known to have existed as early as the second quarter of the twelfth century. Until recently, its expansion throughout Europe had been studied chiefly on the basis of the depiction on seals, manuscripts, sculpture, and other comparable surfaces with relatively little scholarly attention being accorded to blazon, the manner of describing coats of arms. The present volume is outgrowth of the author's Early Blazon (published at the Clarendon Press, Oxford University), a study of the language of heraldry as it is recorded in the earliest blazoned rolls of arms--lists of names accompanied by descriptions of armorial bearings--and in contemporary sources. The rolls, which are reproduced in the original French, provide valuable data, often available nowhere else, about the great men of the Middle Ages and they are an essential source of information for the study of heraldry as well as genealogy, language, and social history.

Book Synopsis Arms, Armies and Fortifications in the Hundred Years War by : Anne Curry
Download or read book Arms, Armies and Fortifications in the Hundred Years War written by Anne Curry and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 1999 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `Careful, original and wide-ranging study of many different aspects of late medieval military history.' HISTORY The Hundred Years War embraced warfare in all aspects, from the grand set pieces of Crecy and Agincourt to the pillaged lands of the dispossessed population. What makes this book different from previous studies emphasising the great battles is its use of less familiar evidence, such as administrative records and landscape archaeology, to gain a truer picture of the realities of medieval warfare. From a general review of battle tactics, the book turns to examine (at points enlisting computer analysis) a number of issues: the composition of the English army, the management of affairs in Aquitaine, the response in England at large to the war and the consequent propaganda and hardship, and the impact of warfare on local communities. Close study of surviving artefacts - weapons, fortifications - also allows realistic assessments of military and naval experiences. Contributors: ANDREW AYTON, MATTHEW BENNETT, ANNE CURRY, IAN FRIEL, ROBERT HARDY, MICHAEL HUGHES, MICHAEL JONES, BRIAN KEMP, JOHN KENYON, MARK ORMROD, ROBERT SMITH, MALCOLM VALE.

Book Synopsis Gunfight: The Battle over the Right to Bear Arms in America by : Adam Winkler

This book was released on 2011-09-19 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative history that reveals how guns—not abortion, race, or religion—are at the heart of America's cultural divide. Gunfight is a timely work examining America’s four-centuries-long political battle over gun control and the right to bear arms. In this definitive and provocative history, Adam Winkler reveals how guns—not abortion, race, or religion—are at the heart of America’s cultural divide. Using the landmark 2008 case District of Columbia v. Heller—which invalidated a law banning handguns in the nation’s capital—as a springboard, Winkler brilliantly weaves together the dramatic stories of gun-rights advocates and gun-control lobbyists, providing often unexpected insights into the venomous debate that now cleaves our nation.

Download or read book Dictionary of British Arms written by D. H. B. Chesshyre and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first of a four-volume collection of British heraldic arms, arranged alphabetically according to their designs and covering the period before 1530. Listed in this volume are entries from Anchor to Bend. This book will help readers to identify the arms that were widely displayed in the Middle Ages and which can now be found not only on tombs, monuments and seals, but also on textiles, manuscripts, metalwork, glass, wall paintings, and other medieval artefacts. The index allows even those without any specialist knowledge of the subject to discover the blazons of arms recorded for particular surnames in the medieval period. Produced specifically to enable readers to identify individual coats of arms, it is an invaluable reference for historians, antiquaries, archaeologists, genealogists and those dealing in and collecting medieval objects.
