Book excerpt: "Understanding the reason for the productivity differences between Canadian and U.S. manufacturing industries is important if a sound industrial strategy is to be followed in the next decade. This is particularly the case if Canada implements its policy of closer economic ties with the United States - either in the form of the previous Trudeau Administration's sectoral free trade approach or the present Mulroney Administration's attempt to enhance access of Canadian goods to the United States."--
Book Synopsis The United States and Canada by : Paul Wonnacott
Download or read book The United States and Canada written by Paul Wonnacott and published by Peterson Institute. This book was released on 1987 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada is the largest trading partner of the United States, and the two governments have begun negotiations for a free trade agreement which would tie their relationship even closer. This study analyzes the difficult problems that must be addressed in the negotiations - including quite different perceptions in the two countries of what constitutes fair trade. It suggests several possible ways of reducing differences over subsidies and countervailing duties. It also addresses the exchange rate relationship between the two dollars, and how this affects the trade outlook. An appendix by John Williamson calculated a fundamental equilibrium exhange rate for the Canadian dollar.
Book Synopsis Industrial Dynamics by : B. Carlsson
Download or read book Industrial Dynamics written by B. Carlsson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on the papers presented at a conference on "New Issues in Industrial Economics" held at Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, June 8-10, 1987. The conference was organized by the Research Program in Industrial Economics (RPIE) in the Department of Economics at CWRU and was sponsored by The Cleveland Foundation, the Eaton Corporation, and The Standard Oil Company (later renamed BP America, Inc.). Their generous support is gratefully acknowledged. All of the papers have been revised, in several cases extensively, since their presentation at the conference. One of the primary reasons for organizing the conference was the concern that Industrial Economics has become too narrowly focused in most academic programs, largely being confined to Industrial Organization, i.e., issues of public policy towards enterprise with emphasis on antitrust and regulatory policy. This subject definition leaves out a number of interesting and important questions about how industries evolve over time, what the role of technological change (and organizational change) is in that process, and the associated structural changes within industries and firms. The object of this book is to derme these issues and suggest a framework within which they can be analyzed. I would like to thank all the conference participants for their contributions, particularly my colleagues at CWRU, Asim Erdilek and William S. Peirce, without whose encouragement and support the conference would not have taken place.

The analysis addresses three specific questions: What are the social and private rates of return on R & D? Are they sensitive to the way they are estimated? And do the results differ across industries and countries? It presents the results of a new empirical study of R & D conducted abroad and how that R & D spills over into the Canadian manufacturing sector and affects productivity. Finally it presents a discussion of policy recommendations in the light of the evidence gathered concerning the role of R & D in productivity growth.
Book Synopsis Canada Among Nations 1986 by : Brian Tomlin
Download or read book Canada Among Nations 1986 written by Brian Tomlin and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 1987 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1986 edition of Canada Among Nations chronicles the momentous, ongoing debates concerning free trade negotiations with the United States. From the start, the free trade talks were bedevilled by a flurry of protectionist moves in the U.S., the most inflammatory involving a proposed duty on Canadian softwood lumber. In the face of American belligerence, the Mulroney government appeared indecisive--on the lumber issue it insisted that it would neither negotiate nor impose an export tax, and then did both. In addition to free trade, Canada Among Nations treats issues including Canada's foreign policy, its economic situation, relations with the third world, and response to contemporary arms-control proposals.
