Book excerpt: This collection by a New York Times journalist gathers three horrifying true accounts of crimes of passion, ambition, and fear. Author Joe Sharkey delivers three gripping accounts of betrayal and murder in this compelling American true crime collection. Above Suspicion: Soon to be a major motion picture starring Emilia Clarke and Jack Huston, this true account tells the story of the only FBI agent to confess to murder. Assigned to Pikeville, Kentucky, rookie Mike Putnam cultivated paid informants and busted drug rings and bank robbers. But when one informant fell in love with the bureau’s rising star, their passionate affair ended with murder. Deadly Greed: On October 23, 1989, Charles Stuart reported that he and his seven-months-pregnant wife, Carol, had been robbed and shot by a black male. By the time police arrived, Carol was dead, and soon the baby was lost as well. Stuart then identified a suspect: Willie Bennett. The attack incited a furor during a time of heightened racial tension in the community. But even more appalling, Stuart’s story was a hoax—he was the true killer. Death Sentence: John List was working as the vice president of a Jersey City bank and had moved his mother, wife, and three teenage children into a nineteen-room mansion in Westfield, New Jersey when he lost his job and everything changed. Fearing financial ruin and the corruption of his children’s souls by the free-spirited 1970s, he came up with a terrifying solution: He would shoot his entire family and vanish, taking on a new life and a new identity.

Book excerpt: When someone suffers a serious loss at their home or business, one of the first things they often think is this: "At least I have insurance." But the claims process is deviously designed to pay only pennies on the dollar for losses. Furthermore, if you take an insurance company to court, you'll find that the legal system is stacked against you. David Skipton brings his many years of claims adjusting experience to help you avoid the pitfalls in the claims process. Learn how to: recognize the tricks insurance companies play to cheat you out of money; take steps to improve your chances of enjoying a favorable outcome on a claim; and receive fair compensation in the event of an insurance payout. It doesn't matter if you own a business or a home-if you have an active claim or not-it's important to demystify the claims process. It begins by learning how to protect your best interests and learning how to play The Claims Game.

Book excerpt: An Environmental Novel. Elderly Jim Easom finds himself alone, having inexplicably survived a devastating pandemic. He sets out on an odyssey across the continent from his home in now-deserted Southern Ontario hoping to reach the Northwest Territories, to find other survivors, and to build a new home. He adopts just two: a sheltie puppy, and a thirteen-year-old girl. They, like him, have suffered much, with more sorrow to come. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Trade and Intercourse Acts passed by Congress between 1796 and 1834 set up a system for individuals to receive monetary compensation from the federal government for property stolen or destroyed by American Indians. By the end of the Mexican-American War, both Anglo-Americans and Nuevomexicanos became experts in exploiting this system—and in using the army to collect on their often-fraudulent claims. As Gregory F. Michno reveals in Depredation and Deceit, their combined efforts created a precarious mix of false accusations, public greed, and fabricated fear that directly led to new wars in the American Southwest between 1849 and 1855. Tasked with responding to white settlers’ depredation claims and gaining restitution directly from Indian groups, soldiers typically had no choice but to search out often-innocent Indians and demand compensation or the surrender of the guilty party, turning once-friendly bands into enemy groups whenever these tense encounters exploded in violence. As the situation became more volatile, citizens demanded a greater army presence in the region, and lucrative military contracts became yet another reason to encourage the continuation of frontier violence. Although the records are replete with officers questioning accusations and discovering civilians’ deceit, more often than not the army was forced to act in direct counterpoint to its duties as a constabulary force. And whenever war broke out, the acquisition of more Indian land and wealth began the cycle of greed and violence all over again. The Trade and Intercourse Acts were manipulated by Anglo-Americans who ensured the continuation of the very conflicts that they claimed to abhor and that the acts were designed to prevent. In bringing these machinations to light, Michno’s book deepens—and darkens—our understanding of the conquest of the American Southwest.
