Book excerpt: During the last week of September 1968, ESRIN (the European Space Research Institute) held the ESRIN-ESLAB Symposium on 'Low-Frequency Waves and Irregularities in the Ionosphere' in Frascati, near Rome. The symposium was attended by about 60 participants, including speakers from most of the ESRO member states, the U.S.A., the U.S.S.R., and Peru. The main topics covered were: (a) observations of ionospheric irregularities by radar scattering, (b) scintillations of satellite signals, (c) geomagnetic micropulsations, and (d) whistlers. Both theoretical and observational aspects were treated. In addition, laboratory results on low-frequency waves in plasmas were discussed, emphasis being given to their possible relevance to low-frequency ionospheric phenomena. Finally, a brief presentation (not included in these proceedings) of the ESRO rocket and satellite program was given by Dr. Pedersen of ESLAB. The symposium provided an exchange of information among workers in closely related fields. It was also valuable in bringing together people whose experience is predominantly in ionospheric observations with others whose field of interest is mainly in plasma physics (theoretical or laboratory) - a combination that seemed particularly appropriate to ESRIN's program and functions.

Book excerpt: The report embodies the results of continuous measurements of ionospheric electron content and scintillations obtained for the first time with a geostationary satellite over the Indian subcontinent. The observations near the crest of the equatorial anomaly indicate the importance of plasma transport in the equatorial ionosphere. Solar and geomagnetic controls also show some interesting features. It has been observed that though the occurrence of scintillation is very low, there may be cases of intense scintillations even at a frequency of 136 MHz. Scintillation in this region has been found to be induced by both E and F regions. (Author).

Book excerpt: A comprehensive review of global ionospheric research from the polar caps to equatorial regions It's more than a century since scientists first identified the ionosphere, the layer of the Earth’s upper atmosphere that is ionized by solar and cosmic radiation. Our understanding of this dynamic part of the near-Earth space environment has greatly advanced in recent years thanks to new observational technologies, improved numerical models, and powerful computing capabilities. Ionosphere Dynamics and Applications provides a comprehensive overview of historic developments, recent advances, and future directions in ionospheric research. Volume highlights include: Behavior of the ionosphere in different regions from the poles to the equator Distinct characteristics of the high-, mid-, and low-latitude ionosphere Observational results from ground- and space-based instruments Ionospheric impacts on radio signals and satellite operations How earthquakes and tsunamis on Earth cause disturbances in the ionosphere The American Geophysical Union promotes discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity. Its publications disseminate scientific knowledge and provide resources for researchers, students, and professionals. Book excerpt: This dissertation describes a theoretical, experimental, and modeling investigation of the equatorial electrojet. We review low latitude ionospheric current models, synthesizing developments from the early times until the present. We then show how to utilize equatorial electrojet irregularities to infer E region electron density and wind profiles from coherent scatter radar experiments. The procedure involves a numerical model of the equatorial ionosphere that relates the vector electric field and current density to the winds. We present electron densities inferred in the equatorial electrojet inferred using a new bistatic radar system installed between Paracas and Jicamarca, Peru. The radar system monitors density profiles using a coherent scatter radar technique that utilizes the Faraday rotation of the scattered signal. Radar measured density profiles are validated by comparing with other electron density measures. A three dimensional electrostatic potential model of the equatorial ionosphere in a magnetic dipole coordinate system is described. The model incorporates realistic ionospheric conductivities, electric fields, winds, and includes anamalous collision effects. The model utilizes bistatic radar measured densities, coherent scatter spectral measurements made at large zenith angles, and electric fields derived from 150 km echo drifts. The model is also constrained by magnetometer records. We next present a technique for extracting zonal winds in the equatorial electrojet from the Doppler shifts of type II radar echoes measured by a narrow beam, obliquely oriented antenna at the Jicamarca Radio Observatory. The wind profiles were retrieved by combining the 3-D model with theory and measurements of type II echo Doppler shifts. The amplitude and phasing of the calculated wind profiles are in general agreement with satellite and rocket-borne wind measurements. We have used height varying type I radar echoes and large-scale electrojet irregularities inferred from interferometric imaging to validate wind profiles estimates derived from type II echoes. (Abstract).

Book excerpt: Cospar Space Research, Volume XVII covers the proceedings of the Open Meetings of the Working Groups on Physical Sciences of the 20th Plenary Meeting of COSPAR, held in Tel Aviv, Israel, on June 7-18, 1977. The book focuses on remote sensing of the earth's environment, atmospheric response to solar and geomagnetic activity, ionosphere, magnetosphere, moon and planets, and cosmic dust. The selection first reviews the development of space research, including sensing the earth from spacecraft; resources, weather, and climate; solar wind and its interactions; galactic system; and the moon and planets. The book also takes a look at the depression of remotely sensed surface temperatures by a dust-laden tropical atmosphere and forest fire fuel mapping from LANDSAT. The text describes the effects of UV variability on stratospheric thermal structure and trace constituents; estimates of the stratospheric temperature variation in response to changes of the flux of solar UV radiation; and electrical conductivity measurements in the stratosphere using balloon and parachute-born blunt probes. The publication also discusses the composition of the mid-latitude winter mesosphere and lower thermosphere and global thermospheric models of neutral density, exospheric temperature, and turbopause height. The selection is a fine reference for readers interested in space research.

Book excerpt: Ionospheric plasma irregularities have been studied on each of two rockets launched into significantly different conditions of equatorial spread-F. In the first operation (into a spread-F decay phase) a number of major depletions were distributed throughout the F-region from its bottomside gradient centered near 260 kilometers, through the F-peak, to a topside altitude of 500 kilometers. In a second operation (launched into a mid-phase development of spread-F) irregularities were observed only on the bottomside gradient, with no depletions in or above the F-peak. (Author).
