Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robust Control in Power Systems deals with the applications of new techniques in linear system theory to control low frequency oscillations in power systems. The book specifically focuses on the analysis and damping of inter-area oscillations in the systems which are in the range of 0.2-1 Hz. The damping control action is injected through high power electronic devices known as flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) controllers. Three commonly used FACTS controllers: controllable series capacitors (CSCs) controllable phase shifters (CPSs) and static var compensators (SVCs) have been used in this book to control the inter-area oscillations. The overview of linear system theory from the perspective of power system control is explained through examples. The damping control design is formulated as norm optimization problem. The H_infinity, H2 norm of properly defined transfer functions are minimized in linear matrix inequalities (LMI) framework to obtain desired performance and stability robustness. Both centralized and decentralized control structures are used. Usually the transmission of feedback signal from a remote location encounters delays making it difficult to control the system. Smith predictor based approach has been successfully explored in this book as a solution to such a problem. Robust Control in Power Systems will be valuable to academicians in the areas of power, control and system theory, as well as professionals in the power industry.

Book excerpt: This book makes the area of integration of renewable energy into the existing electricity grid accessible to engineers and researchers. This is a self-contained text which has models of power system devices and control theory necessary to understand and tune controllers in use currently. The new research in renewable energy integration is put into perspective by comparing the change in the system dynamics as compared to the traditional electricity grid. The emergence of the voltage stability problem is motivated by extensive examples. Various methods to mitigate this problem are discussed bringing out their merits clearly. As a solution to the voltage stability problem, the book covers the use of FACTS devices and basic control methods. An important contribution of this book is to introduce advanced control methods for voltage stability. It covers the application of output feedback methods with a special emphasis on how to bound modelling uncertainties and the use of robust control theory to design controllers for practical power systems. Special emphasis is given to designing controllers for FACTS devices to improve low-voltage ride-through capability of induction generators. As generally PV is connected in low voltage distribution area, this book also provides a systematic control design for the PV unit in distribution systems. The theory is amply illustrated with large IEEE Test systems with multiple generators and dynamic load. Controllers are designed using Matlab and tested using full system models in PSSE.

Book excerpt: Due to the expensive cost of expanding transmission lines, power systems are operated closer to their stability margins. Consequently, stability becomes a challenging problem in the operation of power systems. Interconnected power systems should tolerate large disturbances such as short circuit faults on transmission lines, unexpected outage of generating units, or loss of large loads. Different methodologies have been proposed for enhancing the transient stability of power systems. Developing a controller for improving the transient stability of power systems has dilemma in the architecture, centralized or decentralized control approaches. A centralized controller requires fast communication systems that enable collection of data from different locations throughout the network and fast computing power hosted at a control center which increases the complexity of implementing the controller. By contrast, decentralized approaches can be implemented locally using only local measurements. This dissertation presents a centralized controller approach based on model predictive control (MPC) that enhances transient stability of power systems by determining the optimal control actions for the output powers of the energy storage units. To enhance the performance of the controller in the presence of exogenous disturbances and modeling uncertainty, a controller modeled after tube-based MPC is developed. Moreover, this dissertation introduces a decentralized tube-based MPC to provide coordinated control of excitation and steam turbine of the synchronous generators that explicitly take into account the physical constraints of the actuators. Furthermore, after a major disturbance, power system's response is highly dependent on protection schemes and system dynamics. Improving a power system's situational awareness requires accurate and simultaneous modeling of both protection schemes and dynamic characteristics in the power system's analysis tools. Historical information and ex-post analysis of blackouts reaffirms the critical role of protective devices in cascading events, thereby reinforcing the necessity to represent protective schemes in transient stability studies. Another goal of this study is to investigate the importance of modeling protection systems during transient stability studies, as well as identify and represent critical protective relays in bulk transmission systems. In addition, this dissertation proposes a novel loss of excitation detection technique in order to prevent relay mis-operations during power swings.

Book excerpt: This book examines the different spatial control techniques for regulation of spatial power distribution in advanced heavy water reactors (AHWR). It begins with a review of the literature pertinent to the modeling and control of large reactors. It also offers a nodal-core model based on finite difference approximation since the AHWR core is considered to be divided into 17 relatively large nodes. Further, it introduces a nonlinear model characterizing important thermal hydraulics parameters of AHWR and integrates it into the neutronics model to obtain a coupled neutronics-thermal hydraulics model of AHWR. The book also presents a vectorized nonlinear model of AHWR and implements it in MATLAB/Simulink environment. The model of the reactor is then linearized at the rated power and put into standard state variable form. It is characterized by 90 states, 5 inputs and 18 outputs. Lastly, it discusses control techniques for a nonlinear model of AHWR. This book will prove to be a valuable resource for professional engineers and implementation specialists, researchers and students.

Book excerpt: The first contribution of this dissertation is the case studies for capturing the development of different types of dynamic voltage instability, in both the short- and long-term, caused by the dynamics of different power system devices, especially induction machines. In addition, it investigates how the changing nature of systems and their dynamic behaviours cause critical issues that limit the large-scale integration of wind generators and flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) devices. A second and unique contribution of this thesis is the presentation of a method to bound unmodelled nonlinear dynamics and to design excitation control for the enhancement of large-disturbance voltage stability in power systems with significant induction motor loads. A new technique is developed which captures the full nonlinearity of systems in the region of interest. The nonlinear power system model is reformulated with a linear and a nonlinear term. The nonlinear term is the Cauchy remainder in the Taylor series expansion and in this thesis its bound is used in robust control design. This dissertation also presents an algorithm for the design of a decentralised robust controller for static synchronous compensators (STATCOMs) which results in a significant increase in the available dynamic transfer capability of a power system in the presence of fixed-speed induction generators (FSIGs). Another significant contribution of this research is the design of robust controllers which augment the low-voltage ride-through capability of FSIGs during severe disturbances. Control algorithms, using both structured and unstructured uncertainty representations, are developed for the stabilisation of faulted systems under different operating conditions. The performance of the proposed control schemes fulfils the criteria for robust stability and performance, and produces adequate stability margins for a range of test cases. The effectiveness of the suggested control strategies are validated by detailed simulations with complete nonlinear model of the devices. The performances of the designed controllers are also compared with those of conventional controllers. Simulation results show that both the dynamic voltage stability and the transient stability of a power system can be improved by the use of the robust control methods presented in this thesis.

Book excerpt: In this work we derive asymptotically stabilizing control laws for electrical power systems using two nonlinear control synthesis techniques. For this transient stabilization problem the actuator considered is a power electronic device, a controllable series capacitor (CSC). The power system is described using two different nonlinear models - the second order swing equation and the third order flux-decay model. To start with, the CSC is modeled by the injection model which is based on the assumption that the CSC dynamics is very fast as compared to the dynamics of the power system and hence can be approximated by an algebraic equation. Here, by neglecting the CSC dynamics, the input vector $g(x)$ in the open loop system takes a complex form - the injection model. Using this model, interconnection and damping assignment passivity-based control (IDA-PBC) methodology is demonstrated on two power systems: a single machine infinite bus (SMIB) system and a two machine system. Further, IDA-PBC is used to derive stabilizing controllers for power systems, where the CSC dynamics are included as a first order system. Next, we consider a different control methodology, immersion and invariance (I\&I), to synthesize an asymptotically stabilizing control law for the SMIB system with a CSC. The CSC is described by a first order system. As a generalization of I\&I, we incorporate the power balance algebraic constraints in the load bus to the SMIB swing equation, and extend the design philosophy to a class of differential algebraic systems. The proposed result is then demonstrated on another example: a two-machine system with two load buses and a CSC. The controller performances are validated through simulations for all cases.
