Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contemporary industrial robot is the focal point of a wide variety of elements in modern technology. It is a collection of parts, some of which act as drives and some of which act as architectural materials that give the robot body strength. This book is a thorough inventory of the technologies involved and the way in which they meet and work together in order to produce a functional robot arm. The authors have striven to describe thoroughly the components that make up robot arms. This gives both the student and the practitioner a complete view of the principles involved in such components and the differences between existing technologies. However, it is not only the student who benefits from this approach but also the potential robot user who, at the moment, may be faced with a bewildering choice of combinations of different types of components in the robots that are available to him. For example, it is difficult for a production manager to appreciate the differences between robots that use direct current motors, stepping motors and pneumatic actuators. The authors have succeeded in structuring the book so that the reader can weigh up the pros and cons of these different techniques at whatever level of depth he requires. Certainly, the book aims to provide as much depth as there is in these topics without assuming a detailed knowledge of specialized areas of engineering.

Book excerpt: This is the fourth volume of the successful series Robot Operating Systems: The Complete Reference, providing a comprehensive overview of robot operating systems (ROS), which is currently the main development framework for robotics applications, as well as the latest trends and contributed systems. The book is divided into four parts: Part 1 features two papers on navigation, discussing SLAM and path planning. Part 2 focuses on the integration of ROS into quadcopters and their control. Part 3 then discusses two emerging applications for robotics: cloud robotics, and video stabilization. Part 4 presents tools developed for ROS; the first is a practical alternative to the roslaunch system, and the second is related to penetration testing. This book is a valuable resource for ROS users and wanting to learn more about ROS capabilities and features.

Book excerpt: Food Engineering is a component of Encyclopedia of Food and Agricultural Sciences, Engineering and Technology Resources in the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), which is an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. Food Engineering became an academic discipline in the 1950s. Today it is a professional and scientific multidisciplinary field related to food manufacturing and the practical applications of food science. These volumes cover five main topics: Engineering Properties of Foods; Thermodynamics in Food Engineering; Food Rheology and Texture; Food Process Engineering; Food Plant Design, which are then expanded into multiple subtopics, each as a chapter. These four volumes are aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College students Educators, Professional practitioners, Research personnel and Policy analysts, managers, and decision makers and NGOs

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a privilege to be asked to introduce this important work. Such a book has long been needed. Industrial manipulators and robots have caught the attention of the general public and become very fashionable in the last few years. The casual reader of current newspapers and magazit:les or the viewer of television and films might easily conclude that the development of mechanical hands, arms and legs or other mobility devices has progressed rapidly in only the last few years. Most people are unaware of the gradual orderly succession of creative designs and painstaking refinements which have been produced over a greater number of years. That story is carefully described in this volume, together with diagrams and photographs which document in detail this elegant phase in the history of machine design. This volume together with Volume 3A constitute the most complete and comprehensive work on manipulators and teleoperators. Jean Vertut and Philippe Coiffet are well known not only as authors but also as engineers who have produced some of the finest devices in the world. Of course for the complete history of manipulators and teleoperators one must look back to the artisans who crafted the delightful clock works, mechanical puppets and toys before and during the Renaissance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this book is to cover advances of mobile robotics and related technologies applied for multi robot systems' design and development. Design of control system is a complex issue, requiring the application of information technologies to link the robots into a single network. Human robot interface becomes a demanding task, especially when we try to use sophisticated methods for brain signal processing. Generated electrophysiological signals can be used to command different devices, such as cars, wheelchair or even video games. A number of developments in navigation and path planning, including parallel programming, can be observed. Cooperative path planning, formation control of multi robotic agents, communication and distance measurement between agents are shown. Training of the mobile robot operators is very difficult task also because of several factors related to different task execution. The presented improvement is related to environment model generation based on autonomous mobile robot observations.
