Book excerpt: The Battle of Hastings is won and William the Conqueror now rules England. But the victory brings only fresh challenges for the Norman - with Scottish and Welsh nobles to keep in order as well as potential Saxon rebels to stay on top of. And there are dangers lurking everywhere in Europe for any monarch in these turbulent medieval times. It is too much for one man - and William needs the help of his princely sons. None more so than Robert, Prince (Duke) of Normandy. But forever at odds with his cantankerous father, Robert ploughs his own furrows most of the time without regard to the Conqueror's wishes. Queen Matilda watches patiently as Robert lives his own life and supports her rebellious son without the knowledge of her husband. When they are on speaking terms, the king sends Robert off on some impossible tasks: first as a diplomat, to persuade the Scots back inside their border; then as a stud, to try and forge an alliance with the Welsh through a liaison with a Welshwoman, then to try the same with an Italian Contessa, in order to complete the Norman domination of Italy. Robert's strategies swing from formal persuasion to erotic encounters in the bedchamber, with varying degrees of success. When then king dies, Robert must deal with his treacherous and scheming brothers, William Rufus and Henry. Then the pope calls for a holy war to liberate Christians in Jerusalem - and the rest is history... Or is it? Robert: The Wayward Prince is the story of the Conqueror's eldest son, living within the family from hell, where greed and treachery go hand in hand with love and loyalty. A very modern tale from the 11th century plucked straight from the pages of history and brought to life in a very exciting way. Austin Hernon was born on Tyneside in 1941 and enjoyed a military career. Already a Royal Navy trained diver, he joined the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers as a recovery mechanic before specialising in underwater recovery with the Royal Engineers and Royal Marines. After retiring from the army he worked in British Telecom and Post Office Group, developing information systems for distribution, before retirement when he took up writing. Disappointed that his autobiography failed to impress publishers, Austin chose Robert, Duke of Normandy as his subject, a man to whom he believes history has been unkind.

In fact, she has never ventured further from her small village in the mortal kingdom of Nautia than the capital square. But when a stranger appears to help her evade the palace guards who've come to arrest her for suspected sorcery, Shaye must trust her new companion, Aydan, to keep her safe. As they flee to Medeisia, the ancient land of sorcerers, Shaye is quickly wrapped up in a dangerous world with a target on her back as long-dormant abilities spark and a family history she's never known begins to unravel before her. Meanwhile, Aydan's wanted status and complicated relationship with the royal family leads them down a path they cannot turn from. In the midst of imprisonment, torture, and rising political tension, Shaye and Aydan must rely on each other and decide if their feelings for one another can survive the horrors they endure, the implications that come with her growing power, and the family legacies that will follow them forever.

Book excerpt: On February 28, 2008, to great international surprise, the British Ministry of Defense released a statement acknowledging that Prince Harry, son of the late Princess Diana and third in line to the British throne, had secretly been deployed to Afghanistan. Subsequent reports revealed that the prince had killed up to thirty Taliban insurgents in directing at least three air strikes, and that he had helped Gurkha troops repel a ground attack of Taliban insurgents using a machine gun. On February 29, Prince Harry was withdrawn from the country with distinction via a covert SAS deployment. This is the amazing story of the first British royal to serve his country in 25 years and his 10 heroic weeks of combat.

Book excerpt: A UNIQUE EXPLORATION OF GERMAN CULTURE, FROM SAUSAGE ADVERTISEMENTS TO WAGNER Sitting on a bench at a communal table in a restaurant in Regensburg, his plate loaded with disturbing amounts of bratwurst and sauerkraut made golden by candlelight shining through a massive glass of beer, Simon Winder was happily swinging his legs when a couple from Rottweil politely but awkwardly asked: "So: why are you here?" This book is an attempt to answer that question. Why spend time wandering around a country that remains a sort of dead zone for many foreigners, surrounded as it is by a force field of historical, linguistic, climatic, and gastronomic barriers? Winder's book is propelled by a wish to reclaim the brilliant, chaotic, endlessly varied German civilization that the Nazis buried and ruined, and that, since 1945, so many Germans have worked to rebuild. Germania is a very funny book on serious topics—how we are misled by history, how we twist history, and how sometimes it is best to know no history at all. It is a book full of curiosities: odd food, castles, mad princes, fairy tales, and horse-mating videos. It is about the limits of language, the meaning of culture, and the pleasure of townscape.

Book excerpt: In exploring Royal dynamics, Inheritance sheds light on problems found in any familyOn its first publication in the 1990s, Dennis Friedman's Inheritance caused a furor in England as he traced the many problems of the Royal family as it was then back to Queen Victoria's nursery, unveiling a host of psychodramas played out against a privileged background of English palaces and Scottish castles. In a post-Diana age, the arrival of a new Prince George to the seemingly stable and blissfully happy William and Kate seems to refute Fiedman's thesis—but what of the notoriously wayward Prince Harry? Many questions are raised in this book addressing the complex and turbulent royal relationships, perhaps the most fundamental being the rigid and traditional royal upbringing which still awaits the baby prince. As the royal line is followed down the generations no direct descendent is overlooked and no issue is sidestepped.

Book excerpt: National Book Award-winning poet and author of the internationally best-selling Iron John, Robert Bly revisits a selection of fairy tales and examines how these enduring narratives capture the essence of human nature. Few forms of storytelling have greater power to captivate the human mind than fairy tales, but where do these tales originate from, and what do they mean? Celebrated poet and bestselling author Robert Bly has been asking these questions throughout his career. Here Bly looks at six tales that have stood the test of time and have captivated the poet for decades, from “The Six Swans” to “The Frog Prince.” Drawing on his own creative genius, and the work of a range of thinkers from Kirkegaard and Yeats to Freud and Jung, Bly turns these stories over in his mind to bring new meaning and illumination to these timeless tales. Along with illustrations of each story, the book features some of Bly's unpublished poetry, which peppers his lyric prose and offers a look inside the mind of an American master of letters in the twilight of his singular career.
