I find that erroneous statements are current concerning [the lives and characters of my brothers. To disprove these by giving a faithful picture of their personalities as they are revealed first-hand in their letters, seemed to me a duty to them not only as beloved brothers, but as sons of our parents. I am not sure that I had publication in view _i felt constrained to say how things had really been, and I started to write. One word led to another, one remembrance called forth a thousand. I wrote for the pleasure of writing I surveyed my life and lingered where I listed. The longer I wrote, the more it was my mother's personality which became the prominent one. On her eightieth birthday I surprised my sister Marie with the first five chapters. She was pleased with them. A kind publisher who read them gave me encouragement, and induced me to supplement and revise. I took up the pen once more and found that I had many more things to say. The disconnected chapters became a book. If I have given little in it, it is the best that I have to give, the memories of great and goodtcharacters, of great and good; times. Hatte man fruher den Kompositionen grossen Stils, den Symphonien u. S. W. Diemeiste Bedeutung zugemessen, so beginnt man nunmehr dem Klavierkomponisten Schumann sein Augenmerk zuzuwenden. In der That hat derjenige nicht Un recht, der, um Schumann's Eigenart an der Quelle zu studiren, sich in die Klavierkompositionen der Sturm und Drangperiode versenkt. Hier suchen sich wirklich Mensch, Musiker und Dichter gleichzeitig auszusprechen; diese Werke sind Spiegelbilder nicht allein von Schumann's eigenen ausseren Erlebnissen, sondern von dem gesammten revolutionar-phantastischen Geist jener Periode uberhaupt Aus diesem Grunde ist ihnen auch in vorliegender Skizze ein breiterer Raum gegonnt worden. There are still no small number of people who have a higher and more exclusive right to his life, than the nation. To his country belongs what he achieved and created, such art treasures as he left behind in perpetual legacy; his life, on the contrary, is hers only in so far as it is revealed in these. Such are the considerations that have guided me in my work. I have striven to explain the master's mental development as it is seen in his works, and also to show his great significance in the world of art and letters. The external course of his life will be mentioned only as it affected that mental development, and as it renders his art work more intelligible.
