Download or read book Auld Lang Syne written by M. J. Grant and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2021-12-03 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Auld Lang Syne: A Song and its Culture, M. J. Grant explores the history of this iconic song, demonstrating how its association with ideas of fellowship, friendship and sociality has enabled it to become so significant for such a wide range of individuals and communities around the world. This engaging study traces different stages in the journey of Auld Lang Syne, from the precursors to the song made famous by Robert Burns to the traditions and rituals that emerged around the song in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, including its use as a song of parting, and as a song of New Year. Grant’s painstaking study investigates the origins of these varied traditions, and their impact on the transmission of the song right up to the present day. Grant uses Auld Lang Syne to explore the importance of songs and singing for group identity, arguing that it is the active practice of singing the song in group contexts that has made it so significant for so many. The book offers fascinating insights into the ways that Auld Lang Syne has been received, reused and remixed around the world, concluding with a chapter on more recent versions of the song back in Scotland. This highly original and accessible work will be of great interest to non-expert readers as well as scholars and students of musicology, cultural and social history, social anthropology and Scottish studies. The book contains a wealth of illustrations and includes links to many more, including manuscript sources. Audio examples are included for many of the musical examples. Grant’s extensive bibliography will moreover ease future referencing of the many sources consulted.

Download or read book Scotland in Music written by Roger Fiske and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1983-06-02 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the unique attraction Scotland has had for the great eighteenth- and nineteenth-century composers. It is not about Scottish composers, but rather about the music that for two centuries was written and performed outside Scotland by musicians of other countries who had Scotland in mind. Hitherto far more has been known about this attraction in Germany and France than in Britain, but Roger Fiske here puts this right and shows how nearly all the major composers from Purcell to Brahms were affected - most notably Schubert, Mendelssohn and Bruch, but also Haydn, Beethoven, Chopin and Schumann. In particular, Dr Fiske describes the travels of Mendelssohn and Chopin in more detail than has been attempted before. There are two major influences to be found in this enthusiasm for Scotland. The first is Scotch song, a generic term commonly used in eighteenth-century England for a type of popular song. The second is Scottish literature, especially Macpherson's Ossian and the writings of Sir Walter Scott and Robert Burns: Scotland influenced continental literature as well as inspiring some fine music.

Download or read book Rob Roy written by Walter Scott and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-07-10 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the most popular of his Scottish romances, published at the end of 1817, Scott drew on the legends and historical anecdotes about Rob Roy MacGregor he had collected in his youth. The famous outlaw is only one of a series of vivid characters who cast their spell of the novel's hero, Frank Osbaldistone, on his journey through the wild northern territories of the new United Kingdom. Banished from his father's house, falling hopelessly in love with the spirited Diana Vernon, Frank becomes involved in he conspiracy surrounding the disastrous Jacobite rising of 1715. His adventures take him to `MacGregor's country', across the Highland Line, where he finds cruelty, heartbreak, and some unlikely friends. By turns thrilling and comic, Rob Roy contains Scott's most sophisticated treatment of the Scottish Highlands as an imaginary space where the modern and the primitive come together. Newly edited from the `Magnum Opus' text of 1830, this edition includes full explanatory notes and a critical introduction exploring the originality and complexity of Scott's achievement. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.
