Book excerpt: As heard on NPR's Fresh Air Recommended by The New York Times' Sam Roberts “Start Here is an urgent and timely primer on the approaches that are working and don’t require federal approval or political revolution to end one of the most pressing justice issues the country faces today.” —Brooklyn Daily Eagle A bold agenda for criminal justice reform based on equal parts pragmatism and idealism, from the visionary director of the Center for Court Innovation, a leader of the reform movement Everyone knows that the United States leads the world in incarceration, and that our political process is gridlocked. What can be done right now to reduce the number of people sent to jail and prison? This essential book offers a concrete roadmap for both professionals and general readers who want to move from analysis to action. In this forward-looking, next-generation criminal justice reform book, Greg Berman and Julian Adler of the Center for Court Innovation highlight the key lessons from these programs—engaging the public in preventing crime, treating all defendants with dignity and respect, and linking people to effective community-based interventions rather than locking them up. Along the way, they tell a series of gripping stories, highlighting gang members who have gotten their lives back on track, judges who are transforming their courtrooms, and reformers around the country who are rethinking what justice looks like. While Start Here offers no silver bullets, it does put forth a suite of proven reforms—from alternatives to bail to diversion programs for mentally ill defendants—that will improve the lives of thousands of people right now. Start Here is a must-read for everyone who wants to start dismantling mass incarceration without waiting for a revolution or permission. Proceeds from the book will support the Center for Court Innovation's reform efforts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millions have been raising their voices of frustration, anger, and hate against the caste system for the last thousands of years, asking for change. However, all of them have only voiced their concerns without providing any concrete solutions. In response to this, I have planned a manifesto, blueprint, and substitute. Additionally, I have proposed the establishment of a research team, a movement, and votes in support of or against the new caste system and amendments to the constitution. What I have done and proposed is the only legitimate way to address the problem that exists throughout the country. This sets me apart from millions of daydreamers, as I possess a revolutionary mindset. I am not just a daydreamer; I have a roadmap for a revolution—a roadmap to eliminate all those who oppose the Hindu Vedas, just like Ravan. The struggle we face in our minds for existence, survival, income, livelihood, finance, and work manifests itself daily through anger, screaming, and hatred towards our family members and neighbours. The collective outpouring of anger, screams, and hate from each household creates a massive network that affects many people, leading some, especially women, kind-hearted individuals, and those with a simple mindset, to consider suicide. However, before it reaches that point for many, it engenders ongoing conflicts among millions. The scale of this issue is massive, and the solution lies in a financial and economic revolution called "Kalkiism." If any government can solve the problems of the rich and poor, dowry, caste, and religious conflicts, that's the only way to end Kaliyuga. If you think there is another process to end Kaliyuga, then you are still looking for some kind of magical rain from the sky to end Kaliyuga. Stop dreaming of such stupidity; there won't be any magic. We, humans, are not allowed to witness any magic. Kaliyuga has to end through political change. That's the only legitimate process to end Kaliyuga in today's modern and democratic world. After reading this post, if you are still expecting any magic from God to end Kaliyuga, then you need some perspective and understanding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is presently an emphasis on the downside of schools. Many schools are considered failing, and more and more teachers and administrators are claiming frustration with bureaucratic expectations, kids who don't seem interested in learning, and parents that are disengaged from their children's school experiences. Community members are tired of not getting the results they feel they should get from the educational system-and their tax dollars-especially in terms of the quality of the graduating classes. In addition, the word "accountability" is being linked with the idea that failing students are solely the result of failing teachers and failing schools. What is missing in the public conversation about schools and those who teach is the reality that even in schools considered "failing," even in schools that are physically falling apart, even in schools where kids and their families struggle just to survive-wonderful and exciting things are happening. They are also happening in private schools, charter schools and schools in communities where there is the financial support required to offer a range of educational opportunities to students. The problem is that these wonderful things are often kept within the school or community and not shared with a larger public. We are not fruitfully sharing those touches of educational excellence with other teachers, school districts, and schools. It is important that these wonderful and exciting things be shared so that the public conversation can shift to looking at what does not work to what can work. The teachers noted in this book are examples of professionals still with passion, creativity and the desire and commitment to be an educator that addresses issues of democracy and social justice in their classrooms.

Book excerpt: The strengths and abilities children develop from infancy through adolescence are crucial for their physical, emotional, and cognitive growth, which in turn help them to achieve success in school and to become responsible, economically self-sufficient, and healthy adults. Capable, responsible, and healthy adults are clearly the foundation of a well-functioning and prosperous society, yet America's future is not as secure as it could be because millions of American children live in families with incomes below the poverty line. A wealth of evidence suggests that a lack of adequate economic resources for families with children compromises these children's ability to grow and achieve adult success, hurting them and the broader society. A Roadmap to Reducing Child Poverty reviews the research on linkages between child poverty and child well-being, and analyzes the poverty-reducing effects of major assistance programs directed at children and families. This report also provides policy and program recommendations for reducing the number of children living in poverty in the United States by half within 10 years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly all large American cities rely on zoning to regulate land use. According to Donald L. Elliott, however, zoning often discourages the very development that bigger cities need and want. In fact, Elliott thinks that zoning has become so complex that it is often dysfunctional and in desperate need of an overhaul. A Better Way to Zone explains precisely what has gone wrong and how it can be fixed. A Better Way to Zone explores the constitutional and legal framework of zoning, its evolution over the course of the twentieth century, the reasons behind major reform efforts of the past, and the adverse impacts of most current city zoning systems. To unravel what has gone wrong, Elliott identifies several assumptions behind early zoning that no longer hold true, four new land use drivers that have emerged since zoning began, and basic elements of good urban governance that are violated by prevailing forms of zoning. With insight and clarity, Elliott then identifies ten sound principles for change that would avoid these mistakes, produce more livable cities, and make zoning simpler to understand and use. He also proposes five practical steps to get started on the road to zoning reform. While recent discussion of zoning has focused on how cities should look, A Better Way to Zone does not follow that trend. Although New Urbanist tools, form-based zoning, and the SmartCode are making headlines both within and outside the planning profession, Elliott believes that each has limitations as a general approach to big city zoning. While all three trends include innovations that the profession badly needs, they are sometimes misapplied to situations where they do not work well. In contrast, A Better Way to Zone provides a vision of the future of zoning that is not tied to a particular picture of how cities should look, but is instead based on how cities should operate.

Book excerpt: Glenn Beck, the New York Times bestselling author of The Great Reset, considers the hot-button issue of education in the US, exposing the weaknesses of the Common Core school curriculum and examining why liberal solutions fail. Public education is never mentioned in the constitution. Why? Because our founders knew that it was an issue for state and local governments—not the federal one. It’s not a coincidence that the more the federal government has inserted itself into public education over the years, the worse our kids have fared. Washington dangles millions of dollars in front of states and then tells them what they have to do to get it. It’s backdoor nationalization of education—and it’s leading us to ruin. In Conform, Glenn Beck presents a well-reasoned, fact-based analysis that proves it’s not more money our schools need—it’s a complete refocusing of their priorities and a total restructuring of their relationship with the federal government. In the process, he dismantles many of the common myths and talking points that are often heard by those who want to protect the status quo: Critics of the current system are just “teacher bashers”…Teachers’ unions put kids first...Homeschooled kids suffer both academically and socially…“local control” is an excuse to protect mediocrity…Common Core is “rigorous” and “state led”…Critics of Common Core are just conspiracy theorists…Elementary school teachers need tenure...We can’t reform schools until we eradicate poverty…school choice takes money away from public schools…Charter schools perform poorly relative to public schools. There is no issue more important to America’s future than education. The fact that we’ve yielded control over it to powerful unions and ideologically driven elitists is inexcusable. We are failing ourselves, our children, and our country. Conform gives parents the facts they need to take back the debate and help usher in a new era of education built around the commonsense principles of choice, freedom, and accountability.

Book excerpt: This open access book is a comparative analysis of recent large scale education reforms that broadened curriculum goals to better prepare students for the 21st century. The book examines what governments actually do when they broaden curriculum goals, with attention to the details of implementation. To this end, the book examines system level reforms in six countries at various levels of development. The study includes system level reforms in jurisdictions where students achieve high levels in international assessments of basic literacies, such as Singapore and Ontario, Canada, as well as in nations where students achieve much lower levels, such as Kenya, Mexico, Punjab-Pakistan and Zimbabwe. The chapters examine system-level reforms that focus on strengthening the capacity to teach the basics, as in Ontario and Pakistan, as well as reforms that aim at building the capacity to teach a much broader set of competencies and skills, such as Kenya, Mexico, Singapore and Zimbabwe. The volume includes systems at very different levels of spending per student and reforms at various points in the cycle of policy implementation, some just starting, some struggling to survive a governmental transition, and others that have been in place for an extended period of time. From the comparative study of these reforms, we aim to provide an understanding of how to build the capacity of education systems to teach 21st century skills at scale in diverse settings.
