Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - Topic: Peace and Conflict, Security, grade: Masters Level, Addis Ababa University (Peace and Security Studies), course: Human Security, language: English, abstract: In this study the causes, effects, and measures being undertaken by authorities, such as Addis Ababa Police Commission, Road Authority, Health Bureau and others, with regard to Road Traffic Accidents (RTAs) and its overall linkage with human security in Addis Ababa are examined using mixed methodological approach, i.e., qualitative and quantitative. The findings revealed that, combination of factors contributed for the incidence of RTAs in Addis Ababa; human errors, vehicles defect, poor road design and poor traffic regulation enforcement. The study found the multifaceted effects of RTAs on the economy of households and the state, on the social interaction of victims and family, on the physical safety or the survival of individuals including permanent and temporal health problems. Countermeasures are being carried out authorities starting from creating awareness through education campaigns, improving road designs and enforcement of the traffic regulation of the city, though the rate of RTAs are still raising and occurring frequently. The research concludes that, RTAs have multifaceted effects on human security in Kerkos sub city and /or Addis Ababa and little attention is given to the problem, despite the increase of road crashes from time to time.

Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2017 in the subject Transportation Science & Technology, Ethiopian Civil Service University, language: English, abstract: This paper assesses the trends, causes, and costs of road traffic accidents in Ethiopia. Despite efforts made by various stakeholders to reduce the massacre on Ethiopian roads, road traffic accidents have been a serious health development issue in the country. The essay used data on road traffic accidents in Ethiopia for the period 2006 –2015. Data were obtained from Federal Police Commission and Federal Road Authority and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The study found that at national level, on average road traffic injuries are increasing from year to year where Oromia regional state is the major contributor of total fatalities occurred in the past decade. On the other hand, Addis Ababa city administration is found as a major contributor of serious and slight injuries as well as property damages. The study showed that alike any developing countries, pedestrians and passengers are found to be the most vulnerable and hardest hit segment of road users. The finding also showed that male road users who are in their productive age group are disproportionately affected by road traffic injuries. Human errors (mainly drivers’ behavior and actions) are found as the major cause of road traffic accident in Ethiopia. So as to reduce fatalities and injuries on Ethiopian roads, the essay recommends that road safety policy and law enforcement; capacity building, education, and awareness creation; and cooperation and integration between and/or among all transport stakeholders should be the focus of Ethiopian government.

Book excerpt: Approximately 1.3 million people die each year on the world's roads, and between 20 and 50 million sustain non-fatal injuries. The Global status report on road safety is the first broad assessment of the road safety situation in 178 countries, using data drawn from a standardized survey. The results show that road traffic injuries remain an important public health problem, particularly for low-income and middle-income countries. Pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists make up almost half of those killed on the roads, highlighting the need for these road users to be given more attention in road safety programmes. The results suggest that in many countries road safety laws need to be made more comprehensive while enforcement should be strengthened. The Global status report on road safety results clearly show that significantly more action is needed to make the world's roads safer. [Ed.]

Book excerpt: "The Global status report on road safety 2015, reflecting information from 180 countries, indicates that worldwide the total number of road traffic deaths has plateaued at 1.25 million per year, with the highest road traffic fatality rates in low-income countries. In the last three years, 17 countries have aligned at least one of their laws with best practice on seat-belts, drink-driving, speed, motorcycle helmets or child restraints. While there has been progress towards improving road safety legislation and in making vehicles safer, the report shows that the pace of change is too slow. Urgent action is needed to achieve the ambitious target for road safety reflected in the newly adopted 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: halving the global number of deaths and injuries from road traffic crashes by 2020. Made possible through funding from Bloomberg Philanthropies, this report is the third in the series, and provides a snapshot of the road safety situation globally, highlighting the gaps and the measures needed to best drive progress."--Publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book critically assesses the complex urban issues, planning challenges and development opportunities of rapidly growing cities, using Addis Ababa as a case study. Just like other developing cities, Addis Ababa is undergoing numerous natural and policy-driven changes. This book analyses the effect of these changes on urban management to allow better understanding of the conceptual frameworks that define the everyday functions of rapidly growing cities. It demonstrates that rapid urban growth has simultaneously created opportunities for economic development in the developing world as well as social, environmental and cultural challenges causing a mismatch between demand and the supply of services. The author argues that, by combining indigenous knowledge and practices and contemporary planning principles, developing countries can overcome challenges concerning environmental and public health, transport congestion, rising rents and house prices and lack of open space. Foregrounding the experience of everyday citizens of the city, this book aids our understanding of the nature of rapidly growing cities and outlines what needs to be done so that the city meets the needs of the people. A unique contribution to the literature on cities of the developing world, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of Urban Studies, Planning, Development Studies and African Studies.

Book excerpt: This book presents a number of guidelines that are particularly useful in the context of decisions related to system-approach-based modern traffic engineering for the development of transport networks. Including practical examples and describing decision-making support systems it provides valuable insights for those seeking solutions to contemporary transport system problems on a daily basis, such as professional working for local authorities involved in planning urban and regional traffic development strategies as well as representatives of business and industry directly involved in implementing traffic engineering solutions. The guidelines provided enable readers to address problems in a timely manner and simplify the choice of appropriate strategies (including those connected with the relation between pedestrians and vehicle traffic flows, IT development in freight transport, safety issues related to accidents in road tunnels, but also open areas, like roundabouts and crossings). Furthermore, since the book also examines new theoretical-model approaches (including the model of arrival time distribution forming in a dense vehicle flow, the methodological basis of modelling and optimization of transport processes in the interaction of railways and maritime transport, traffic flow surveys and measurements, transport behaviour patterns, human factors in traffic engineering, and road condition modelling), it also appeals to researches and scientists studying these problems. This book features selected papers submitted to and presented at the 16th Scientific and Technical Conference Transport Systems Theory and Practice organized by the Department of Transport Systems and Traffic Engineering at the Faculty of Transport of the Silesian University of Technology. The conference was held on 16–18 September 2019 in Katowice (Poland), more details at www.TSTP.polsl.pl.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2019 in the subject Sociology - Law and Delinquency, grade: A-, Addis Ababa University (Department of Sociology), course: Senior Essay, language: English, abstract: The present study was emphasized on how the action of Mob justice is perpetrated in the suburbs of Addis Ababa City. This Action has been the reality in different parts of Ethiopia especially for the last two years as a manifestation of the political, economic and social turmoil in the existing regime. The research has been followed a case study to get in-depth information from few eyewitnesses that were comprised of different places to collect ample evidence based on the eyewitness account. A qualitative method was used to analyze the data taken from informants with an interview. The findings of the study showed that the nature of mob justice in the suburbs of Addis Ababa city is marked by perpetrators from different socio-demographic backgrounds which especially are young, unemployed and male-dominated mobs. Moreover, there were also strangers that commit most of the action intentionally against a few ethnic groups that project different resentments related to the current political-economic situation in the country. Most of the patterns of mob justice in these localities were supported by government officials at the community level due to different reasons like as a means to hide from future accusations that are believed by these officials. At an individual level, most of the perpetrators were reported to be filled with ethnic haters and economic benefits that are perceived to be gained after the displacement and evacuations by victims from their households and most of the squatter settlements that were targets of the mob justice. At a community level, the ignorance and negligence of the communities in each locality cost hundreds of innocent lives and destructions of huge amounts of properties from these areas. All such actions were caused by different implications that divided households, neighbors, and communities into disintegrations and uncertainties. Finally, educating communities, taking measures to criminals, rehabilitating the victims with different strategies, controlling the hate speeches and fake news by Social Medias with appropriate legal frames, organizing the justice system with impartiality and independence, and change the compositions of local administrative with different ethnic groups and etc were the major recommendations suggested based on the findings reached.

Book excerpt: Enhancing Urban Safety and Security addresses three major threats to the safety and security of cities: crime and violence; insecurity of tenure and forced evictions; and natural and human-made disasters. It analyses worldwide trends with respect to each of these threats, paying particular attention to their underlying causes and impacts, as well as to the good policies and best practices that have been adopted at the city, national and international levels in order to address these threats. The report adopts a human security perspective, concerned with the safety and security of people rather than of states, and highlights issues that can be addressed through appropriate urban policy, planning, design and governance.
