Download or read book Storming Las Vegas written by John Huddy and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2009-04-28 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On September 20, 1998, Jose Vigoa, a child of Fidel Castro’s revolution, launched what would be the most audacious and ruthless series of high-profile casino and armored car robberies that Las Vegas had ever seen. In a brazen sixteen-month reign of terror, he and his crew would hit the crème de la crème of Vegas hotels: the MGM, the Desert Inn, the New York—New York, the Mandalay Bay, and the Bellagio. The robberies were well planned and executed, and the police–“the stupids,” as Vigoa contemptuously referred to them–were all but helpless to stop them. But Lt. John Alamshaw, the twenty-three-year veteran in charge of robbery detectives, was not giving up so easily. For him, Vigoa’s rampage was a personal affront. And he would do whatever it took, even risk his badge, to bring Vigoa down.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every person who rides in a motor vehicle of any kind may well become involved in a road rage incident. Yes, that means every person—doctor, lawyer, teacher, construction worker, minister, every man woman, and child. The road rage epidemic has no limitations. Fasten your seat belts for this book will take you on an enlightening, at times frightening ride through the direct causes and results of road rage. The writing explicitly points out five levels of roadway violence. The book's ultimate goals are: (1) to meet thoughtfully the problems emanating from the epidemic, (2) to understand the best strategies for combating the violence, (3) to join in the declaration of war against America's #1 enemy. There are thirty-five thousand traffic deaths on American roadways every year. There are more than four million injuries from American accidents. Collision costs are exceeding three hundred billion dollars. Lawsuits expenses are astonishing but unattainable because many cases are still pending. Traffic experts know that a large percentage of these devastating statistics can be attributed to road rage. The exact number cannot be ascertained because many people causing the problems flee from the incident scenes. Through head-on revelations, Let's Declare War on Road Rage will bring the reader face-to-face with road rage incidents that happened in locations around the country. They will be very personalized incidents involving common ordinary people who became involved in situations that led to events they might never recover from. The on-the-sight recollections of these incidents ironically open the door to the realization that everyone needs to join the war against road rage, comparable to the devastating effects of road rage, if you join the fight your new knowledge will also be devastating, only this time the victim will be road rage.

Book Synopsis Terror on the Highway by : Paul Eberle
Download or read book Terror on the Highway written by Paul Eberle and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2011-04-26 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A doctor chases, then assaults an elderly woman after she cuts in front of his BMW; a teenager shoots another driver because the driver "looked at him with disrespect"; one man kills another because "he was driving too slow." These are a few of the many examples of extreme road rage documented by Paul Eberle in this shocking look at the havoc caused by angry people in their cars. Eberle makes it clear that young and old, men and women, and all socioeconomic classes are involved in this epidemic of rage and violence on our highways. In 1998, the California Highway Patrol recorded 209 incidents of Assault with a Deadly Weapon in which a motor vehicle was the weapon used, and in the same year the media reported more than 4,000 stories on road rage nationwide. Since then, the problem has only gotten worse.Eberle lists the warning signs of potential road-rage drivers, suggests ways to avoid such dangerous individuals, discusses the psychology of the car as "holy icon" and the effects of traffic congestion on "mad car disease," expresses skepticism about psychologists specializing in aggressive driving, and proposes ways to reinvent our cities to make them less stressful, dangerous places.Complete with graphic pictures showing the dire consequences of driving while enraged, Terror on the Highway should be mandatory reading in all driver education classes.
Book Synopsis Everyday Las Vegas by : Rex J. Rowley
Download or read book Everyday Las Vegas written by Rex J. Rowley and published by University of Nevada Press. This book was released on 2013-04-01 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year, more than thirty-five million people from all over the world visit Las Vegas; only two million call the city home. Everyday Las Vegas takes a close look at the lives of those who live in a place the rest of the world considers exotic, even decadent. Using broad research, including interviews with more than one hundred Las Vegans, Rex Rowley--who grew up in Las Vegas--examines everyday life in a place that markets itself as an escape from mundane reality. Rowley considers such topics as why people move to Las Vegas, the nature of their work and personal lives, the impact of growth and rapid change, and interaction with the overwhelmingly touristic side of the city. He also considers the benefits and perils of living in a nonstop twenty-four-hour city rich in entertainment options and easy access to gambling, drugs, and other addictions. His examination includes the previously unstudied role of neighborhood casinos patronized by locals rather than tourists and the impact that a very mobile population has on schools, churches, and community life. Rowley considers the very different ways people perceive a place as insiders or outsiders, a dichotomy that arises when tourism is a mainstay of the local economy. His work offers insights into what Las Vegas can teach us about other cities and American culture in general. It also contributes to our understanding of how people relate to places and how the personality of a place influences the lives of people who live there.

Download or read book Road Rage written by Maria L. Garase and published by LFB Scholarly Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation Garase examines aggressive driving and road rage among college students. Her approach is based in Agnew's General Strain Theory (GST) (1992). She uses GST theory to include the three sources of strain, situational and trait anger, and coping mechanisms (peer relationships and self-control). Strain has a direct, positive, significant relationship with road rage, and also an indirect effect through the coping mechanism of peer behavior. Garase concludes that strain as well as trait anger play significant roles in determining who is likely to participate in acts of aggressive driving and road rage.

Download or read book American Carnage written by Thomas Gabor and published by Mango Media Inc.. This book was released on 2023-05-02 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shooting Down Gun Violence Misinformation "Don't tell me there's no such thing as gun violence. It happened in Parkland." ―Fred Guttenberg #1 Best Seller in School Safety, Education Policy, and Law Enforcement Politics Fred Guttenberg, who lost his beloved daughter Jaime in the 2018 Parkland school shooting, and International gun policy consultant Thomas Gabor team up in American Carnage to dismantle some of the most common myths about guns and gun violence. A national disgrace. In America, over 40,000 die each year as a result of gun violence. Relative to other advanced countries, the U.S. has a dismal gun violence record. Gun law reforms could reduce the number of gun deaths, but many political challenges stand in the way. A widespread multi-year misinformation assault on truth by the gun lobby and gun-extremists sows doubt about the dangers of pervasive gun ownership, gun carrying, and potential effectiveness of gun laws. Debunking popular gun myths. Countering with strong evidence-based research the many slogans and myths repeated incessantly by spokespersons for the gun lobby and its surrogates is essential if we are to have a society where kids can attend school safely and people can work and enjoy life without fear of being shot. Over the last 30 years, the NRA’s campaign to achieve an armed society has succeeded in persuading many Americans that having a gun in the home or carrying a gun makes them safer. The evidence is overwhelming this is not the case. Guns in the home are far more likely to be used against a family member or in a suicide attempt than against an intruder. Tackling this and other myths is critical. Myths and slogans exposed as false in American Carnage include: Gun owners frequently use firearms to fend off attackers An armed society is a safer society Guns don’t kill people, people kill people If you have read Trigger Points, The Violence Project, Warning Signs, or Fred Guttenberg’s Find the Helpers, American Carnage is a must read.
Download or read book Copping Out written by Anthony Stanford and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2015-03-30 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Chicago journalist reveals how pervasive police misconduct, brutality, and corruption are changing the perspective of the criminal justice system and eroding the morals of the American people. In this shocking yet fascinating volume, an award-winning Chicago journalist goes behind the headlines to provide a far-reaching analysis of brutality, vice, and corruption among men and women who have sworn to serve and protect. This timely book draws on actual cases to examine the widespread phenomenon of corruption inside law enforcement agencies. It looks at the effort of criminal elements and gangs to infiltrate police departments and the criminal justice system, and it discusses how vigilante justice is encouraged by claims of police misconduct. Of particular importance to readers, the book also exposes the trickle-down effect of police corruption as it affects American values and society as a whole. But the news is not all bad. Police departments across the nation are fighting back against abuse of power, and the author sheds light on the escalating battle they are waging against rogue police officers involved in criminal activity. Through Stanford's investigative work and firsthand interviews with leading law enforcement professionals, readers will be privy to the backstory of the struggle of police commands to insulate their departments against the criminality and corruption so prevalent today.
