Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inherently interdisciplinary, the field of oral medicine continues to incorporate and apply new knowledge and techniques to the care of patients. For nearly 70 years, Burket’s Oral Medicine has been the principal text for all major aspects of oral medicine, from the basic science to clinical practice. This 12th edition continuous to serve as the authoritative source of information for students, residents, and clinicians interested in the field of oral medicine. Through the addition of new chapters and substantial new material, the 12th edition of the book significantly advances the understanding of today’s practice of oral medicine. Research findings are produced at a rapid pace and are readily accessible from a variety of sources. A chapter on clinical research has been added to the book to help readers interpret how scientific findings reported in the literature impact their practice. Awareness of the unique aspects of oral health needs for the elderly, infants, and young children prompted the inclusion of two new chapters introducing the fields of geriatric and pediatric oral medicine. Two other original chapters on radiologic interpretations and complications of nonsurgical cancer therapy complement in more detail other broader topics addressed in the book. The 12th edition of Burket’s Oral Medicine continues the tradition of this text in providing students, residents, and experienced practitioners with access to the expertise and experience of an international group of clinical scholars who are recognized experts in the increasingly complex field of diagnosis and medical management of maxillofacial disease and dental treatment of medically complex patients.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RNA plays a central, and until recently, somewhat underestimated role in the genetics underlying all forms of life on earth. This versatile molecule not only plays a crucial part in the synthesis of proteins from a DNA template, but is also intrinsically involved in the regulation of gene expression, and can even act as a catalyst in the form of a ribozyme. This latter property has led to the hypothesis that RNA - rather than DNA - could have played an essential part in the origin of life itself. This landmark text provides a systematic overview of the exciting and rapidly moving field of RNA biology. Key pioneering experiments, which provided the underlying evidence for what we now know, are described throughout, while the relevance of the subject to human disease is highlighted via frequent boxes. For the second edition of Molecular Biology of RNA, more introductory material has been incorporated at the beginning of the text, to aid students studying the subject for the first time. Throughout the text, new material has been included - particularly in relation to RNA binding domains, non-coding RNAs, and the connection between RNA biology and epigenetics. Finally, a new closing chapter discusses how exciting new technologies are being used to explore current topical areas of research.

Book excerpt: Thermodynamics was created in the ?rst half of the 19th century as a theory designed to explain the functioning of heat engines converting heat into mechanical work. In the course of time, while the scope of research in this ?eld was being extended to a wider and wider class of energy transformations, thermodynamics came to be considered as a general theory of machines identi?ed with energy transducers. Imp- tant progress in biochemistry in the ?rst half of the 20th century, and in molecular biology in the second half, made it possible to think of treating even living organisms as machines, at least on the subcellular level. However, success in applying thermodynamics to elucidate the phenomenon of life has been rather mitigated. Two reasons seem to be responsible for this unsatisfactory s- uation. Nineteenth century thermodynamics dealt only with simple (homogeneous) systems in complete equilibrium. Although during the 20th century a nonequilibrium thermodynamics was developed, sta- ing with the Onsager theory of linear response and ending with the Prigogine nonlinear theory of dissipative structures, these theories still concern the originally homogeneous systems. Because living organisms are complex systems with a historically frozen spatial and functional structure, a thermodynamics of both nonequilibrium and complex s- tems is needed for their description. The ?rst goal of the present book is to formulate the foundations of such a thermodynamics.

Undesirable effects, from drug resistant viruses to low oral bioavailability, toxicity and severe side effects limit clinical usefulness. These factors drive demand for improved antiviral strategies. This book offers an up-to-date review of new drugs and targets, novel modes of action, vector-based treatments and even the blocking of defined genes by inhibiting mRNA formation (siRNA). Includes contributions by acknowledged experts; the book will serve as a compendium for R&D and educational professionals, and be of value for students.
