Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1979, young David De Le Cruz and his parents move out of their rented one-bedroom house in town to be closer to his father’s job. David’s dad takes care of a local farm just outside of Hanford, California. David thinks moving to the country will be a new beginning to a great life—until something unsettling starts to happen. Late at night, David experiences strange manifestations, unsure of what they mean and what is happening to him. He is surrounded by horrors and haunted by a darkness that opens a world he is forced to face. David’s Aunt Vera, his father’s older sister, uses her spiritual beliefs through the practice of witchcraft to help him face the evil that feeds off of his fear. Her efforts are not enough. Flashes of images flow out from his mind like small streams of remembered nightmares. These dreams become David’s window to the outside world while trapped inside his own rivulet of darkness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his study of negative existence and how it affects James Joyce's principal characters, Gian Balsamo joins the ongoing debate about the Irish writer's relationship to Dante and considers the centrality of messianism to that relationship. Finding in Dante a negative poetics that becomes a model for Joyce, Balsamo suggests that the inception and cessation of life - two occurrences that conventionally are deemed impossible to experience personally and directly - typically frame the existential experiences of Joyce's main characters. Balsamo perceives Stephen, Leopold, and Shem as messianic figures because they rebel against this convention, clustering their lives around the very events of inception and burial. Balsamo traces the engagement of each of the three characters in a negative existence immune from the rules and limitations of ordinary experience. Each struggles to express rather than exorcise the fecundity of his own mortality; each reinvents his biography as involving the pivotal transaction of one death - be it a mother's, a son's, or even that of his own body - in return for catharsis. Durkheim, and Noam Chomsky, Balsamo challenges the current debate by identifying the messianic thread that ties together the biographies of Joyce's three characters. Faced with the fissure between history and poetic vocation, Stephen embraces the sacrificial poetry of silence. Faced with the domestic squalor provoked by the loss of his son, Leopold renews at every meal the cathartic exchange of food and semen. Faced with a destiny of death and decomposition, Shem reenacts the tradition of the medieval cycle drama, stretching his own body like a parchment on a cross and then rubricating it like a sacred manuscript.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When E. M. Forster described Lawrence as the greatest imaginative novelist of his generation, his comment was a challenge to a world where Lawrence had notoriety but there was no agreement as to his literary standing. Now, sixty years after Lawrence's death, the nature of his achievement is still being debated. Although D. H. Lawrence thought of himself as an English writer, his broad vision has aroused passionate interest in many countries beyond his own. It is in two aspects--as a writer of the twentieth century, and as one with international standing--that this collection of essays presents Lawrence "in the modern world". Lawrence is seen from the perspective of the textual editor, the psychologist and the social historian. He is placed in the wide contexts of the puritan imagination, British society drama and the regional novel. The authors cover such stylistic issues as his characteristic narrative voices, and touch on philosophical matters in an exploration of his concept of dualism. The essays, although the work of Lawrence enthusiasts, are not uniformally reverential in tone. All the authors are aware of the fundamentally exploratory nature of Lawrence's imagination, and his consequent failures as well as triumphs in both conception and achievement. Regardless of whether the works delight or anger, they seem now as alive and pertinent, as open to engagement, acceptance or disagreement as at any time in the seventy-five years since they first began to appear.

Book excerpt: A complete beginner's guide to British moths. Moths are sometimes overlooked compared to the day-flying butterflies, however, many moths are even more colourful, accessible and fascinating. Britain and Ireland are home to an incredible array of moths, with more than 2,500 species known, and increasing numbers of people have discovered the joy in watching, catching and photographing this diverse group. But, where should you start in being able to identify them? British Moths: A Gateway Guide is a wonderful introduction to 350 species of the most common and eye-catching adult moths that you may encounter in the UK. Rather than being grouped in taxonomic order, species are organised by season, and similar-looking moths are placed alongside one another for ease of identification. Concise species accounts include information on key features, making it easy to distinguish between confusion species, seasonality, and when and where to see them; each account is also placed alongside photos that have been carefully chosen to aid identification with clearly-marked top tips. From the author of Much Ado About Mothing, this is the perfect companion for anyone wanting to learn more about these beautiful and remarkable creatures - from hawk-moths to tigers and ermines to emeralds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daniel Manslayer didn't know why he felt compelled to travel to the Westward and the Lands of Chaos. He only knew that he needed respite from Count Valkar and all the other prize-seekers that were looking to cash in on the bounty placed on his head. He had been told that the Lands of Chaos had no ruler, and he thought that was a perfect place to be. Little did he realize that his fate was not in his hands and the light was drawing together the pieces of destiny that were prophesied three hundred years in the past. Having been an orphan growing up with strangers, Daniel knew no family and found little desire for lasting relationships. He preferred to be alone and to trust only in himself. He greatly detested involvement with two distinct groups of people. In his mind rulers were to be avoided at all times and female companionship was meant to be uncomplicated and short--the shorter, the better. The light saw it differently, and not only were females in the plan, but these females were also the triumvirate matriarchal rulers of the Three Sisters, the most powerful nation in the Westward. They and the unholy monsters created by the dark lords were on an unexpected collision in the Lands of Chaos.
