'Beautifully written account' Dave Simpson, The Guardian 'Writes beautifully' The Sun Welcome to the world of Adrian Smith, playing his Jackson guitar onstage to millions - while behind the scenes he explores far-flung rivers, seas and lakes, waterways and weirs, in a fearless quest for fishing nirvana. Hooked on the angling adrenaline rush since first catching perch from East London canals on outings with his father, Adrian grew up to be in one of Rock's most iconic bands. On tour, his gear went with him. The fish got bigger. The adventures more extreme. In Monsters of River and Rock you'll hear about his first sturgeon: a whopping 100-pounder from the roaring rapids of Canada's Fraser River that nearly wiped him out mid-Maiden tour. Then there's the close shave with a shark off the Virgin Islands whilst wading waist-deep for bonefish. Not to mention an enviable list of specimen coarse fish from the UK.

Download or read book Overrun written by Andrew Reeves and published by ECW Press. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intelligent investigative writing meets experiential journalism in this important look at one of North America’s most voraciously invasive species Politicians, ecologists, and government wildlife officials are fighting a desperate rearguard action to halt the onward reach of Asian Carp, four troublesome fish now within a handful of miles from entering Lake Michigan. From aquaculture farms in Arkansas to the bayous of Louisiana; from marshlands in Indiana to labs in Minnesota; and from the Illinois River to the streets of Chicago where the last line of defense has been laid to keep Asian carp from reaching the Great Lakes, Overrun takes us on a firsthand journey into the heart of a crisis. Along the way, environmental journalist Andrew Reeves discovers that saving the Great Lakes is only half the challenge. The other is a radical scientific and political shift to rethink how we can bring back our degraded and ignored rivers and waterways and reconsider how we create equilibrium in a shrinking world. With writing that is both urgent and wildly entertaining, Andrew Reeves traces the carp’s explosive spread throughout North America from an unknown import meant to tackle invasive water weeds to a continental scourge that bulldozes through everything in its path.

Book Synopsis Carp, River Carpsucker, Smallmouth Buffalo, and Bigmouth Buffalo in Lewis and Clark Lake, Missouri River by : Charles H. Walburg
Download or read book Carp, River Carpsucker, Smallmouth Buffalo, and Bigmouth Buffalo in Lewis and Clark Lake, Missouri River written by Charles H. Walburg and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of age composition, growth, length-weight relation, reproduction, year-class strength, and food habits were conducted from 1962 to 1964 on carp, river carpsucker, smallmouth buffalo, and bigmouth buffalo in Lewis and Clark Lake, a main stem Missouri River reservoir impounded in July 1955. Slow growth of these fishes was attributed to low standing crops of plankton and bottom fauna which may have resulted in excessive turbidity and rapid water exchange in the reservoir. All four species produced strong year classes in the 2 years following impoundment of Lewis and Clark Lake; reproduction since that time has been poor. These species did not produce year classes comparable in abundance to thos which occurred following impoundment because of unfavorable environmental conditions. The probable major limiting successful reproduction was lack of rise in water level durig the spawning period.
