The book explores how, in performing and interpreting life-cycle rituals, Nagé use these three categories in conceptualizing different stages in a person's coming into being--beginning with fetal existence through entry into adulthood, marriage, and extending to death and beyond. Special attention is given to two unusual, now defunct, and previously non-obligatory ceremonies and how they relate to other life-cycle rites and enduring features of Nagé society, including marriage alliance and treatment of the dead. All these rituals reveal that, for Nagé, an unborn child exists in a largely animal state, becoming fully human only after birth. Funeral rites, by contrast, turn on a belief that the deceased becomes a malevolent spirit before transforming into a disembodied soul. Nevertheless, before this transformation is complete, Nagé also conceive of a person as participating in an animal-like condition. Based on 34 years of anthropological fieldwork (1984-2018), this book is the first general account of Nagé culture and indigenous ritual. Engaging with anthropology's "ontological turn"--a theoretical approach grounded in the idea that different societies differ fundamentally in the way they understand humans in relation to other beings--it is also the first to explore a society's worldview by focusing on the life cycle and particularly how component rituals express beliefs about the course of a human life. Studying the emergence of rituals in childhood provides insight into the complex dynamics of social group cognition. My dissertation examines how children identify and acquire collective rituals to affiliate with social groups and how evaluations of ritual performance may differ across cultures. Though there is increasing evidence that children acquire ritual through the process of imitation, the underlying assumption is that they engage in this behavior as a means of affiliation with social groups. This assumption has not yet been empirically tested, so this dissertation examined the impact of ritual participation on children’s in-group affiliation (Wen, Herrmann, & Legare 2016) and how ritual participation serves to increase affiliation with group members and group leaders, thereby avoiding social exclusion from the group (Wen, Willard, Caughy, & Legare, in prep). The results provide insight into the early-developing preference for in-group members and are consistent with the proposal that rituals facilitate in-group cohesion. Given the propensity of rituals across cultures, this dissertation examined how evaluations of conformity to a ritual differs cross-culturally (Wen, Clegg, & Legare, 2017). This dissertation proposes that humans are psychologically prepared to engage in ritual as a means of in-group affiliation to prevent the threat of group ostracism. This interdisciplinary and cross-cultural research has been designed to provide an innovative developmental and mixed-methodological approach to studying cultural learning.

This is especially true of the male initiation rituals that until recently were held in Papua New Guinea. For the most part, these rituals have been understood as all-male institutions, intended to maintain and legitimate male domination. Women's exclusion from the forest space where men conducted most such rites has been taken as a sign of their exclusion from the entire ritual process. Women as Unseen Characters is the first book to examine the role of females in Papua New Guinea male rituals, and the first systematic treatment of this issue for any part of the world. In this volume, leading Melanesian scholars build on recent ethnographies that show how female kin had roles in male rituals that had previously gone unseen. Female seclusion and the enforcement of taboos were crucial elements of the ritual process: forms of presence in their own right. Contributors here provide detailed accounts of the different kinds of female presence in various Papua New Guinea male rituals. When these are restored to the picture, the rituals can no longer be interpreted merely as an institution for reproducing male domination but must also be understood as a moment when the whole system of relations binding a male person to his kin is reorganized. By dealing with the participation of women, a totally neglected dimension of male rituals is added to our understanding.
