Download or read book Mexican Phoenix written by D. A. Brading and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Juan Diego, to whom the Virgin Mary appeared in 1531 miraculously imprinting her likeness on his cape, was canonised in Mexico in 2002 by Pope John Paul II. In 1999, the revered image of Our Lady of Guadalupe had been proclaimed patron saint of the Americas by the Pope. How did a poor Indian and a sixteenth-century Mexican painting of the Virgin Mary attract such unprecedented honours? Across the centuries the enigmatic power of the image has aroused fervent devotion in Mexico: it served as the banner of the rebellion against Spanish rule and, despite scepticism and anti-clericalism, still remains a potent symbol of the modern nation. This book traces the intellectual origins, the sudden efflorescence and the adamantine resilience of the tradition of Our Lady of Guadalupe and will fascinate anyone concerned with the history of religion and its symbols.
Book Synopsis Myth and History in Ancient Greece by : Claude Calame
Download or read book Myth and History in Ancient Greece written by Claude Calame and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2003-07-22 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surely the ancient Greeks would have been baffled to see what we consider their "mythology." Here, Claude Calame mounts a powerful critique of modern-day misconceptions on this front and the lax methodology that has allowed them to prevail. He argues that the Greeks viewed their abundance of narratives not as a single mythology but as an "archaeology." They speculated symbolically on key historical events so that a community of believing citizens could access them efficiently, through ritual means. Central to the book is Calame's rigorous and fruitful analysis of various accounts of the foundation of that most "mythical" of the Greek colonies--Cyrene, in eastern Libya. Calame opens with a magisterial historical survey demonstrating today's misapplication of the terms "myth" and "mythology." Next, he examines the Greeks' symbolic discourse to show that these modern concepts arose much later than commonly believed. Having established this interpretive framework, Calame undertakes a comparative analysis of six accounts of Cyrene's foundation: three by Pindar and one each by Herodotus (in two different versions), Callimachus, and Apollonius of Rhodes. We see how the underlying narrative was shaped in each into a poetically sophisticated, distinctive form by the respective medium, a particular poetical genre, and the specific socio-historical circumstances. Calame concludes by arguing in favor of the Greeks' symbolic approach to the past and by examining the relation of mythos to poetry and music.
Book Synopsis Painting as Business in Early Seventeenth-century Rome by : Patrizia Cavazzini
Download or read book Painting as Business in Early Seventeenth-century Rome written by Patrizia Cavazzini and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Painting as Business in Early Seventeenth-Century Rome offers a new perspective on the world of painting in Rome at the beginning of the Baroque, from both an artistic and a socioeconomic point of view. Biased by the accounts of seventeenth-century biographers, who were often academic painters concerned about elevating the status of their profession, art historians have long believed that in Italy, and in Rome in particular, paintings were largely produced by major artists working on commission for the most important patrons of the time. Patrizia Cavazzini&’s extensive archival research reveals a substantially different situation. Cavazzini presents lively and colorful accounts of Roman artists&’ daily lives and apprenticeships and investigates the vast popular art market that served the aesthetic, devotional, and economic needs of artisans and professionals and of the laboring class. Painting as Business reconstructs the complex universe of painters, collectors, and merchants and irrevocably alters our understanding of the production, collecting, and merchandising of painting during a key period in Italian art history.
Book Synopsis The Wedding in Ancient Athens by : John Howard Oakley
Download or read book The Wedding in Ancient Athens written by John Howard Oakley and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Wedding in Ancient Athens is the first book to reconstruct the stages of the ancient Greek wedding ceremony using a long-neglected source of information: vase paintings from the sixth through fourth centuries B.C." "In order to elucidate the entire ceremony, from the preparations for the wedding to the rituals performed on the day after the wedding night, John H. Oakley and Rebecca H. Sinos incorporate copious illustrations of Athenian vases in their analysis, supplementing evidence drawn from contemporary Greek literature. The weddings rendered on the vases evolve through time, from formal scenes of the wedding procession on black-figure vases to later red-figure scenes offering more intimate views of the bride as she prepares her adornments. In these later scenes, the authors point out, Greek women appear as more than just passive objects of men's manipulations; they possess their own powerful and divinely sanctioned means of seduction." "The evidence of wedding scenes on vases of both eras is valuable for several reasons. Some vases depict aspects of the wedding that are not clearly portrayed in literature, thus supplying a better understanding of each stage of the ceremony. Vases also offer insight into Athenian attitudes toward the wedding, suggesting a perspective different from that provided by Greek literature. The book includes scenes that represent real life, scenes that are clearly mythological, and also some tableaux that blur the distinction between mortals and gods or heroes, suggesting the idealized state in which mortals appeared when engaged in rituals with divine prototypes." "The Wedding in Ancient Athens is as enjoyable as it is informative. Oakley and Sinos thoroughly explore Athenian wedding iconography and interpret it so that the ceremony can be appreciated by a modern audience."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Bernini's Biographies by : Maarten Delbeke
Download or read book Bernini's Biographies written by Maarten Delbeke and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unique among early modern artists, the Baroque painter, sculptor, and architect Gianlorenzo Bernini was the subject of two monographic biographies published shortly after his death in 1680: one by the Florentine connoisseur and writer Filippo Baldinucci (1682), and the second by Bernini's son, Domenico (1713). This interdisciplinary collection of essays by historians of art and literature marks the first sustained examination of the two biographies, first and foremost as texts. A substantial introductory essay considers each biography's author, genesis, and foundational role in the study of Bernini. Nine essays combining art-historical research with insights from philology, literary history, and art and literary theory offer major new insights into the multifarious connections between biography, art history, and aesthetics, inviting readers to rethink Bernini's life, art, and milieu. Contributors are Eraldo Bellini, Heiko Damm, John D. Lyons, Sarah McPhee, Tomaso Montanari, Rudolf Preimesberger, Robert Williams, and the editors.Maarten Delbeke is Assistant Professor of architectural history and theory at the universities of Ghent and Leiden.
