Book Synopsis The Rites and Wrongs of Liturgy by : Thomas O'Loughlin
Download or read book The Rites and Wrongs of Liturgy written by Thomas O'Loughlin and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2018-04-12 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all want to celebrate the liturgy well, to experience good, uplifting, and meaningful worship. But what is the best route to follow? In The Rites and Wrongs of Liturgy, Thomas O’Loughlin offers a way forward that strengthens faith, builds up Christian community, and points toward a new direction based on liturgical principles that are rooted in our natures as ritual beings as well as in the gospel. The Rites and Wrongs of Liturgy explains why good liturgy is important, how to recognize it, and how to assess liturgy in terms of a larger vision of the Christian life. O’Loughlin, a seasoned theologian and teacher, identifies ten principles that make for good liturgy. Such liturgy must be honest, open, joyful, inclusive, celebrative of community, facilitative of engagement, based in creation, attentive to the marginalized, free of clutter, and true to the pattern of the incarnation. Since good celebrations build faith and bad liturgy weakens it, these principles promise to bring new life and meaning to every celebrating community.

Book Synopsis The Rites & Wrongs of Janice Wills by : Joanna Pearson
Download or read book The Rites & Wrongs of Janice Wills written by Joanna Pearson and published by Scholastic Inc.. This book was released on 2011-10-01 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For anyone who's ever survived a rite of passage or performed a mating dance at Prom . . . The Japanese hold a Mogi ceremony for young women coming of age. Latina teenagers get quinceaneras. And Janice Wills of Melva, NC ... has to compete in the Miss Livermush pageant. Janice loves anthropology--the study of human cultures--and her observations help her identify useful rules in the chaotic world of high school. For instance: Dancing is an effective mating ritual--but only if you're good at it; Hot Theatre Guys will never speak to Unremarkable Smart Girls like Janice and her best friend, Margo; and a Beautiful Rich Girl will always win Melva's annual Miss Livermush pageant. But when a Hot Theatre Guy named Jimmy Denton takes an interest in Janice, all her scientific certainties explode. For the first time, she has to be part of the culture that she's always observed; and all the charts in the world can't prove how tough--and how sweet--real participation and a real romance can be. Funny, biting, and full of wisdom, this marks the debut of a writer to watch.

Book excerpt: RITES AND WRONGS is a humorous fantasy novel in the tradition of Fritz Leiber and, latterly, Tom Holt. It is the story of one small god’s battle for fame and power. His fight for existence against apathy, greed and blatant atheism. He leaves Earth in search of another, less sophisticated, world where his unique talents will be better appreciated. His ambition is to set up an adoring congregation who will love and worship him and only him, and to have mighty heroes stride the world on holy quests searching for relics with which to adorn his magnificent temple. OK, so he’ll settle for a little respect and the odd orgy or two. What he ends up with is a corpulent and miserly High Priest, a mute acolyte, and two reluctant crusaders who are more interested in having a good time than gaining points on the karmic scoreboard. But Banish is not a god to give up easily.

Download or read book Remaking Men written by David Tacey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-23 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nature of masculinity is a popular subject for contemporary authors, either treated critically from a sociological standpoint, or analysed from a psychological and spiritual perspective. In Remaking Men, David Tacey argues that we must strive to bridge the gap between these separate traditions - masculinity should neither be hijacked by the spiritual, Jung-influenced men's movement, nor discussed merely as a product of socio-political forces. Examining his own and other men's experience in a critical and lively discourse he evades the simplistic optimism of the 'inner journey' approach and the chronic pessimism of contemporary academic arguments. This is a fascinating and very accessible look at masculinity for those who want to explore self and society with intelligence and soul.

Book Synopsis Equal Rites by : Clyde R. Forsberg Jr.
Download or read book Equal Rites written by Clyde R. Forsberg Jr. and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2004-03-10 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both the Prophet Joseph Smith and his Book of Mormon have been characterized as ardently, indeed evangelically, anti-Masonic. Yet in this sweeping social, cultural, and religious history of nineteenth-century Mormonism and its milieu, Clyde Forsberg argues that masonry, like evangelical Christianity, was an essential component of Smith's vision. Smith's ability to imaginatively conjoin the two into a powerful and evocative defense of Christian, or Primitive, Freemasonry was, Forsberg shows, more than anything else responsible for the meteoric rise of Mormonism in the nineteenth century. This was to have significant repercussions for the development of Mormonism, particularly in the articulation of specifically Mormon gender roles. Mormonism's unique contribution to the Masonic tradition was its inclusion of women as active and equal participants in Masonic rituals. Early Mormon dreams of empire in the Book of Mormon were motivated by a strong desire to end social and racial discord, lest the country fall into the grips of civil war. Forsberg demonstrates that by seeking to bring women into previously male-exclusive ceremonies, Mormonism offered an alternative to the male-dominated sphere of the Master Mason. By taking a median and mediating position between Masonry and Evangelicism, Mormonism positioned itself as a religion of the people, going on to become a world religion. But the original intent of the Book of Mormon gave way as Mormonism moved west, and the temple and polygamy (indeed, the quest for empire) became more prevalent. The murder of Smith by Masonic vigilantes and the move to Utah coincided with a new imperialism—and a new polygamy. Forsberg argues that Masonic artifacts from Smith's life reveal important clues to the precise nature of his early Masonic thought that include no less than a vision of redemption and racial concord.
Book Synopsis Memory, Grief, and Agency by : Sunder John Boopalan
Download or read book Memory, Grief, and Agency written by Sunder John Boopalan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that an active memory of and grief over structural wrongs yields positive agency. Such agency generates rites of moral responsibility that serve as antidotes to violent identities and catalyze hospitable social practices. By comparing Indian and U.S. contexts of caste and race, Sunder John Boopalan proposes that wrongs today are better understood as rituals of humiliation which are socially conditioned practices of domination affected by discriminatory logics of the past. Grief can be redressive by transforming violent identities and hostile in-group/out-group differences when guided by a liberative political theological imagination. This volume facilitates interdisciplinary conversations between theorists and theologians of caste and race, and those interested in understanding the relation between religion and power.
