Book excerpt: This mixed-methods research study applied the Risk and Need principles of the Risk-Needs-Responsivity (RNR) Theory to men and women court-ordered to participate in Batterer Intervention Programs (BIPs) operated through a Southern California county Domestic Violence Court. Risk for re-offense and need for treatment for substance abuse, trauma, and psychological distress were assessed in 178 men and women. Outcome measures were participant satisfaction with treatment and program completion. Of the 178 surveyed, 70 completed the satisfaction survey while still in treatment, which included open-ended qualitative responses. These 70 participants were also assessed for additional treatment need: Domestic Violence Prevention Education. Program completion status was obtained on another 73. Results showed considerable variation in risk and need factors among participants, such that four different groups emerged: Low risk and need, Low risk and High need, High risk and Low need, and High risk and need. Neither risk nor need for treatment predicted either satisfaction with treatment or program completion. However, post-hoc analyses revealed significant differences between each of the four BIPs in terms of program completion and treatment satisfaction. In particular, one BIP that provided culturally sensitive treatment had a markedly higher program completion rate than did the others. Also, participants who had been married were more likely to complete treatment than those who had not. Finally, qualitative analysis of participant responses demonstrated that a majority of participants appreciated learning skills through the program. Those most satisfied appeared to gain some self-awareness, while those least satisfied had more suggestions for how to improve the treatment program to better meet their needs. Implications for practice, policy, and research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Meta-analytic reviews of batterer intervention program (BIP) evaluations have indicated that they are minimally successful at reducing domestic violence recidivism. Although outcomes of direct program comparisons have yet to be made, correctional rehabilitation programs used to treat a wide variety of offenders (e.g., substance users, violence offenders, and so forth) that adhere to the “principles of effective intervention” (PEI) have reported much higher reductions in recidivism. Some scholars have proposed that the PEI may offer guidance in ways to improve BIP effectiveness. Therefore, this study seeks to empirically examine the individual-level, “building blocks” of the PEI – specifically, the risk and need principles – among DV offenders. I use data from 505 DV offenders from the Multi-Site Batterer Intervention Program Evaluation to determine how PEI risk factors and criminogenic needs relate to DV recidivism, and whether they are more or less predictive of DV recidivism than DV-specific risk factors and criminogenic needs. There were several advantages for using the Multi-Site Batterer Intervention Program Evaluation data. Such advantages included the large sample size, the extensive follow-up information related to the recidivism measures, and the multiple BIP locations, which allowed for better generalizability of the results. However, it is important to note that this study was limited in some ways due to the data (i.e., several variables were restricted to dichotomous measures; some variables were used as proxy measures, as exact operationalization of the constructs was possible; program level variables were limited in availability, and therefore individual level variables were the main focus of this dissertation). Results from this study provide three main conclusions regarding the building blocks of the PEI and DV offenders. First, the PEI appear to be relevant to DV, as there are many elements (i.e., risk factors and criminogenic needs) of the risk and need principles that overlap with DV offenders. Second, risk among DV offenders is slightly different than risk among general offender populations. Third, while criminogenic needs are related to DV offenders, more tailored criminogenic needs appear to be more predictive of DV recidivism. The results of this study demonstrate the extent to which traditional PEI risk factors and criminogenic needs overlap with DV risk factors and criminogenic needs. It is recommended that future research replicate this study with more rigorous methods (e.g., data collected under the PEI framework).

This thesis will compare a literature review of the qualitative components of other known batterer intervention programs and research of what is already being done in the field to the Allies in Change curriculum written by Dr. Chriss Huffine, based out of Portland Oregon.

The purpose of this study was to explore the supervision and training needs of practitioners who work in batterer intervention programs (BIPs). This study utilized qualitative data collected from hourlong, audio-recorded interviews with three BIP practitioners (one male and two female). Interviews were conducted in a large, Midwestern metro area over a period of three weeks, were transcribed verbatim, and coded for themes by the researcher. Major findings included: Participants were overall satisfied with quality of supervision, which was in contrast with previous research. Participants felt more supervised (even oversupervised) than participants in previous research. Finally, specific training and education in batterer intervention, even the field of domestic violence in general appears to be lacking. Social work implications were also discussed. This study is a beginning effort to more closely examine the supervision and training needs of BIP practitioners. Quality training and supervision supports BIP practitioners in their effort to help reduce violence and abuse in families in the community.
