The co-occurring relationships of these factors have received limited empirical attention. This study examined how risk factors of IPV, stressful life events, and problematic substance use were related to depressive symptoms among women who have experienced IPV in the past 6 months. Participants included 112 women (Mage=32.26; 67% Black) recruited from community organizations in the U.S. Midsouth. Results from a hierarchical multiple regression analysis indicated that after accounting for age, income, racial minority status, physical health, and violence- and stress-related factors, more frequent IPV and more problematic tobacco use were associated with increased depressive symptomatology. These findings highlight a meaningful connection between problematic tobacco use and depressive symptoms, indicating the need to incorporate tobacco use psychoeducation and cessation strategies into treatment programs for women experiencing depression in the context of IPV.

Book excerpt: In the United States, methamphetamine (MA) use is a growing public health concern, with particularly high rates of MA use in California. MA use has been associated with poor mental health outcomes, including depression, and an increased risk for intimate partner violence (IPV), especially among women. Evidence suggests that a woman's social support is a protective factor that reduces the risk of adverse mental health outcomes. This crosssectional analysis examined the relationship between lifetime physical and sexual IPV, social support and depression. Baseline data of female (n=207) and male (n=219) MA users enrolled in the FASTLANE II Study, an HIV behavioral prevention intervention in San Diego, CA, were used for the analysis. All participants were 18 years or older, tested negative for HIV, selfidentified as heterosexual, had at least one opposite sex partner in the past 2 months, and recently used meth (i.e., snorted, smoked or injected meth) at least once in the past two months. A multivariable logistic regression was performed in order to examine the relationship between IPV and depression, and the interaction between IPV and social support. This sample was ethnically diverse with a majority of women self-identifying as White (38%) and a majority of men self-identifying as African American (40%). About 60% of men and 88% of women reported ever experiencing physical and/or sexual IPV. With regards to the outcome, 66% of men and 80% of women experienced depressive symptoms in the past two weeks. The median social support score among men and women was 26 (interquartile range=:7, 28) and 24 (interquartile range=:7, 28), respectively. Among male MA users, lifetime IPV was found to be associated with depression after adjusting for social support. Social support was associated with depression among men ([aOR]: 0.91; 95% CI: 0.84-0.98) and women ([aOR]: 0.84; 95% CI: 0.76-0.93). Social support was found to be a protective factor for depression among men and women. Programs and services that target MA-using individuals with depressive symptoms may benefit from incorporating a social support component to optimize health outcomes.

Book excerpt: It is known that intimate partner violence (IPV) is associated with psychological and physical health problems (Coker et al., 2002; Fisher & Regan, 2006). Although victims' alcohol use has been associated with IPV (Cunradi, Caetano, & Schafer, 2002; Lemon, Verhoek-Oftedahl, & Donnelly, 2002), alcohol use has generally been examined as a risk factor or outcome variable. An alternate model, not yet thoroughly examined, is that alcohol use interacts with IPV to increase the risk of health-related problems. The present study was designed to elucidate the interrelationships of IPV experience, alcohol use, and health outcomes. Particular emphasis was placed on psychological IPV because it has been less studied despite evidence that it is uniquely related to health (Fisher & Regan, 2006; Follingstad, 2007). The study focused exclusively on women because studies suggest that the consequences of IPV are more severe for women than for men (Coker et al., 2002; Tjaden & Thoennes, 2000). The main hypothesis was that the relationship between IPV and health outcomes is moderated by alcohol use and that increased alcohol use would be associated with poorer health outcomes. A sample of 6,725 participants from a public data set available from the National Institute of Justice and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was used. Lifetime physical, sexual, and psychological IPV, psychological IPV chronology, and alcohol use frequency were investigated as predictors, and perceived health and depressive symptoms were outcome variables. Results indicated that women who had experienced physical/sexual IPV or psychological IPV in their lifetimes reported more frequent depressive symptoms than those who denied a history of IPV. Women who reported psychological IPV during their lifetime also had poorer perceived health. Current, but not past, psychological IPV was associated with poorer perceived health and more frequent depressive symptoms, consistent with previous findings. Contrary to the hypothesized effects, the presence of lifetime physical/sexual IPV was not significantly related to perceived health in this sample. Also counterintuitively, use of alcohol for a larger number of days each week during the past year was associated with slightly better perceived health and fewer depressive symptoms, although total volume consumed was not measured. None of the interactions between alcohol use frequency and IPV were significant. The findings illustrate that psychological IPV is an essential variable for understanding IPV victims' well-being and should be included in future investigations of victimization. Current psychological IPV was more impactful than past psychological IPV on current health, even though participants on average perceived themselves as relatively healthy and reported relatively infrequent depressive symptoms. One could infer that victims may be able to cope more effectively when abusive experiences have been relatively infrequent, less severe, or have ceased to occur. It will be important to verify these results in participants who report greater alcohol use frequency and poorer health and also to assess the impact of demographic factors on the reported findings.

The survey consists of telephone interviews with a nationally representative sample of 8,000 U.S. women and 8,000 U.S. men about their experiences as victims of various forms of violence, including intimate partner violence. The survey compares intimate partner victimization rates among women and men, specific racial groups, Hispanics and non-Hispanics, and same-sex and opposite-sex cohabitants. It also examines risk factors associated with intimate partner violence, the rate of injury among rape and physical assault victims, injured victims' use of medical services, and victims' involvement with the justice system. Research on intimate partner violence has increased dramatically over the past 20 years. While greatly enhancing public awareness and understanding of this serious social problem, this research has also created much controversy and confusion. Findings of intimate partner victimization vary widely from study to study. Some studies conclude that women and men are equally likely to be victimized by their partners, but others conclude that women are more likely to be victimized. Some studies conclude that minorities and whites suffer equal rates of intimate partner violence, and others conclude that minorities suffer higher rates. In addition, there are many gaps in the scientific literature on intimate partner violence, such as the level of violence committed against men and women by same-sex intimates. Little empirical data exist on the relationship between different forms of intimate partner violence, such as emotional abuse and physical assault. Finally, little is known of the consequences of intimate partner violence, including rate of injury and victims' use of medical and justice system services. This Research Report addresses these and other issues related to intimate partner violence. The information presented in this report is based on findings from the National Violence Against Women (NVAW) Survey, a national telephone survey jointly sponsored by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The survey, which was conducted from November 1995 to May 1996, consists of telephone interviews with a representative sample of 8,000 U.S. women and 8,000 U.S. men. Survey respondents were queried about their experiences as victims of various forms of violence, including rape, physical assault, and stalking by intimate partners. Victimized respondents were asked detailed questions about the characteristics and consequences of their victimization, including the extent and nature of any injuries they sustained, their use of medical services, and their involvement with the justice system. This Research Report also summarizes the survey's findings on victimization rates among women and men, specific racial groups, Hispanics and non-Hispanics, and opposite-sex and same-sex cohabitants. It examines risk factors associated with intimate partner violence, rates of injury among rape and physical assault victims, injured victims' use of medical services, and victims' involvement with the justice system. Although this report focuses on women's and men's experiences as victims of intimate partner violence, complete details about men's and women's experiences as victims of rape, physical assault, and stalking by all types of assailants are contained in earlier NIJ and CDC reports. Because of the sensitive nature of the survey, state-of-the-art techniques were used to protect the confidentiality of the information being sought and to minimize the potential for retraumatizing victims of violence and jeopardizing the safety of respondents.

Based on evidentiary studies, major depression in either parent can interfere with parenting quality and increase the risk of children developing mental, behavioral and social problems. Depression in Parents, Parenting, and Children highlights disparities in the prevalence, identification, treatment, and prevention of parental depression among different sociodemographic populations. It also outlines strategies for effective intervention and identifies the need for a more interdisciplinary approach that takes biological, psychological, behavioral, interpersonal, and social contexts into consideration. A major challenge to the effective management of parental depression is developing a treatment and prevention strategy that can be introduced within a two-generation framework, conducive for parents and their children. Thus far, both the federal and state response to the problem has been fragmented, poorly funded, and lacking proper oversight. This study examines options for widespread implementation of best practices as well as strategies that can be effective in diverse service settings for diverse populations of children and their families. The delivery of adequate screening and successful detection and treatment of a depressive illness and prevention of its effects on parenting and the health of children is a formidable challenge to modern health care systems. This study offers seven solid recommendations designed to increase awareness about and remove barriers to care for both the depressed adult and prevention of effects in the child. The report will be of particular interest to federal health officers, mental and behavioral health providers in diverse parts of health care delivery systems, health policy staff, state legislators, and the general public.

Book excerpt: Physical and psychological intimate partner violence (IPV) are deleterious to the physical and mental health of romantic partners and their children, yet both forms of aggression continue to be prevalent even when couples become pregnant with their first child. This study aimed to investigate the factors contributing to IPV in couples experiencing the transition to parenthood. A community sample of 98 heterosexual couples undergoing the transition to parenthood was recruited from Victoria, BC. Couples self-reported levels of depressive symptomatology, attachment anxiety and avoidance, relationship satisfaction, and frequency of physical and psychological IPV perpetration and victimization. Men with greater attachment anxiety perpetrated both forms of IPV at a higher rate than men with lower levels of anxiety. Women with greater depressive symptoms were more psychologically aggressive towards their partners. Women who were more depressed, or more anxiously or avoidantly attached were less satisfied with their relationships, and decreased satisfaction was in turn related to greater perpetration of physical and psychological aggression. Women's relationship satisfaction mediated the effects of their depressive symptoms and attachment anxiety and avoidance on their perpetration of psychological IPV, and the effects of their attachment insecurity on their perpetration of physical IPV. Relationship satisfaction did not mediate these associations for men. Men's avoidance did not moderate the association between women's anxiety and men's and women's IPV perpetration; a model with genders reversed testing the moderating effect of women's avoidance on the association between men's anxiety and men's and women's IPV perpetration was also not significant. Men's anxiety also predicted women's psychological IPV perpetration, controlling for their own anxiety and psychological victimization. The results illuminate the ways in which men and women may be affected differently by the factors contributing to risk for violence during the transition to parenthood. Implications for prenatal interventions targeting depression, attachment insecurity, and relationship satisfaction in order to reduce the risk of IPV are discussed.
