This book was released on 2014-07-22 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Degrees of Reading Power (DRP(R)) section of the CMT 4 Language Arts test measures reading as a process in which students attempt to make sense of the text they read. The DRP(R) test consists of a number of nonfiction passages on a variety of topics. Within these passages, words have been deleted and the student must choose the correct word for each deletion in the text. Many standardized tests for reading use the Cloze method. Queue's CMT 4 Cloze Reading workbooks follow the precise format of the DRP(R) portion of the CMT 4 Language Arts test. Each book provides several dozen nonfiction passages for students to practice mastering this often difficult and challenging reading exercise. As on the actual CMT 4 Language Arts test DRP(R) section, the passages increase in difficulty. Many of these passages cover topics relevant to Connecticut history, science, and landmarks and are, therefore, of special interest to Connecticut students. Also great for home schooling!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, likely the first of its kind in the English language, explores Chinese for specific and professional purposes (CSP) in terms of theorizing and developing practical applications for language teaching and learning. While research in language for specific purposes is thriving for languages such as English, there has been comparatively little such research conducted for Chinese. This volume attempts to fill the gap by bringing together practitioners from a broad international scholarly community, who share common interests yet diverse orientations. Seventeen papers are included, and address four broad thematic categories: (1) academic Chinese, (2) business Chinese, (3) Chinese for medicine and health care, and (4) Chinese for other broadly defined services and industries (diplomacy, tourism, wine-tasting, etc.). Representing the state of the art in CSP research, the book offers an indispensable guide for anyone interested in theoretical and practical issues in this area of applied Chinese language studies.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mastering the vocabulary of a foreign language is one of the most daunting tasks that language learners face. The immensity of the task is underscored by the realisation that it is not only single words but also numerous standardised phrases (idioms, collocations, etc.) that need to be acquired. There is thus a clear need for instructional methods that help learners tackle this task, and yet few proposals for vocabulary instruction have so far gone beyond techniques for rote-learning and familiar means of promoting of noticing. The reason for this is that vocabulary and phraseology have long been assumed arbitrary. The volumeoffers a long-overdue alternative by exploring and exploiting the presence of linguistic 'motivation' - or, systematic non-arbitrariness - in the lexicon. The first half of the volume reports ample empirical evidence of the pedagogical effectiveness of presenting vocabulary to learners as non-arbitrary. The data reported indicate that the proposed instructional methods can benefit when both the nature of the target lexis and the basic cognitive orientations of particular learners are taken into account. The first half of the book mostly targets lexis that has already attracted a fair amount of attention from Cognitive Linguists in the past (e.g. phrasal verbs and figurative idioms). The second half broadens the scope considerably by revealing the non-arbitrariness of diverse other lexical patterns, including collocations and word partnerships generally. This is achieved by recognising some long-neglected dimensions of linguistic motivation - etymological and phonological motivation, in particular. Concrete suggestions are made for putting the non-arbitrary nature of words and phrases to good use in instructed language learning. The volumeis therefore of interest not only to applied linguists and researchers in Second Language Acquisition/Foreign Language Teaching, but also to second and foreign language teaching professionals.
