Book excerpt: This volume weaves together the Scottish otter stories from Gavin Maxwell's three non-fiction books, Ring of Bright Water (1960), The Rocks Remain (1963), and Raven Meet Thy Brother (1969). Maxwell was both an extraordinarily evocative writer and a highly unusual man. While touring the Iraqi marshes, he was captivated by an otter and became a devoted advocate of and spokesman for the species. He moved to a remote house in the Scottish highlands, co-habiting there with three otters and living an idyllic and isolated life – at least for a while. Fate, fame, and fire conspired against this paradise, and it, too, came to an end, though the journey was filled with incident and wonder. Maxwell was also talented as an artist, and his sinuous line drawings of these amphibious and engaging creatures, and the homes they occupied, illustrate his story. This book stands as a lasting tribute to a man, his work, and his passion. It was received and has endured as a classic for its portrait not only of otters but also of a man who endured heartaches and disappointments, whose life embodied both greatness and tragedy. He writes with rare eloquence about his birth, his devotion to the beloved Scottish highlands, and the wildlife he loved, while refusing to ignore the darker aspects of his nature and of nature in its larger sense.

Jackson’s mama is getting married, and he gets to be the ring bearer. But Jackson is worried . . . What if he trips? Or walks too slowly? Or drops the rings? And what about his new stepsister, Sophie? She’s supposed to be the flower girl, but Jackson’s not sure she’s taking her job as seriously as she should. In a celebration of blended families, this heartwarming story, stunningly illustrated by the award-winning Floyd Cooper, is a perfect gift for any child who's nervous to walk down the aisle at a wedding, and shows kids that they can handle life’s big changes. Praise for The Ring Bearer: "Throughout, Cooper's softly textured mixed-media illustrations offer a warm, affirming depiction of this black family's life and love together . . . Book excerpt: What a gift life is! It comes ready to open every morning. Each day is totally unique. Each day can be a new adventure. It can be a source of joy, or of sorrow. It all depends on how we approach it. The secret to joyful living is learning to look at life through the eyes of a small child. As a bona fide baby boomer, I have lived a life filled with many joys and some regrets. Today I choose to live life in joy and with a sense of childlike wonderment. This book is a reflection on how to recapture the sense of wonder and joy we were born with. This book is a collection of thoughts, ramblings, and experiences about our special gift of life. Baby Boomer Ramblings offers my thoughts, observations and suggestions, on living life in a more positive and happier way. All of this is wrapped around a poem, or more correctly, a poem wrapped around life's gifts. Personally, I prefer to live life as a poem. Poetry adds magic to life. It's the mind's and heart's way of expressing one's inner voice. That is what this book does. Unlike a textbook of life that one reads and studies, poetry is recited by one's mind and speaks to one's heart and spirit. At the minimum, this book offers some food for thought on how to live in the moment. Learn how to live life with a sense of awe and childlike glee. As a baby boomer who has experienced around two-thirds of my life, I'm finally at that stage where I've finally got it. Read this book and discover how to have contentment and laughter. Become a childlike poet of life and be forever young!

Book excerpt: When you wish upon a rambling star, true love will lead you home… Swoon-worthy rodeo champion Dixon Ramsey is used to playing the hero for Bandits Hollow, Colorado, whether it’s rounding up their wayward cattle or taking care of the town drunk. Yet he’s totally caught off guard when Tempest Wright, a popular radio show host, blows into the county fair with her eight-year-old boy and his Angus yearling in tow. Her son’s bull has become so cantankerous that he’s about to get them kicked out of 4-H, and Tempest is served an ultimatum—either get expert training from Dixon, or they can kiss the county fair goodbye. For the sake of her son, relationship-phobic Tempest has no choice but to trust this drop-dead gorgeous cowboy whose killer charm makes her want to head for the hills. Yet with a little magical help from Granny Tinker, Dixon shows Tempest a whole new world where love is real on the range, second chances are worth fighting for, and only the toughest cowboys survive—because they know how to stay. Rambling Star Ranch is Book 1 in the Starlight & Sagebrush Series of contemporary western romances set in the Rocky Mountains. Starlight & Sagebrush Series: Love, laughter, and a touch of magic surround these rugged cowboys who don’t know what they’re in for when Evangeline Tinker comes to Bandits Hollow, Colorado. As a renowned fortune teller, she can’t help meddling in people’s love lives with the help of her best friends Jubilee and Pearl. Their specialty? Finding world-weary women who could use a dose of countrified male affection and good old fashioned courtship with the kind of tough and sexy cowboys who are destined to stay. But the course of true love never did run smooth, and Evangeline and her friends have their hands full convincing their latest targets that love is the magic that changes everything…

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having journeyed together on bikes clear from northern Italy, south to Sicily and west across Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco, the two vagabonds Pike and Emery have separated under mysterious and ominous circumstances. Sans bike, sans Pike, Emery now enters Spain on the ferry boat the Andalucia, aboard which he meets Rita, a lovely surprise acquaintance of the now missing person, Pike. The two rent a car and drive up the Costa del Sol the Sunshine Coast -- to San Roque, a lovely Andalusian village with a beautiful old city center and steep streets, whitewashed courtyards, and balconies full of flowers. They drove on to Estepona, the legendary Salduba, the Muslim Estebbuna, from which they again could see the heights of Gibraltar and still further mountains of North Africa. Estepona shone white against the sparkling blue sea. The paint used on the houses was made from the surrounding limestone mountains. The old town was a maze of cobbled steep, narrow streets, squares, and patios past hotels, restaurants, cafes, tapas bars, shops, and bodegas wine cellars. They came to a wide promenade lined in palm trees garlanded with flowers. Eventually they land in the town of Benala de Guadix in the eastern part of the Province of Granada, where the people literally lived under the ground. In the Barrio Santiago region of the Sierra Nevada were over two thousand Guadixian-style cave homes. In downtown Guadix, signs pointed to the "Barrio Troglodyte" the cave district. The region was famous, not surprisingly, for its hand-crafted earthenware, sold roadside for miles around. They go to Valencia, the city of Spain's national hero, El Cid, and "the homeplace of Paella," and on to Sagunto, where everyone was out for a siesta, it seemed out of town for the siesta. Do you think were the first people ever to visit Sagunto? Rita ventured, puzzled. The two went down to the Port and the Playa de Malvasur. But there was nobody else there not a soul. Emery and Rita walked northward and stopped at Canet de Berenguer on the Rac de Mar Beach, a beautiful beach with still finer sand and more dunes. A light chill fell with the dusk. The two sat on the beach wrapped in blankets and watched the lights go on up and down the coast, then retreated for the night. When Emery was sure Rita was asleep, he ventured out alone to have another look at the moon and stars and constellations. It seemed to him that he'd sat down on the perfect spot. Unhurried winds swept by as through a corridor, whistling. The oceans gentle lapping came in, then back out, all up and down the shore. It was mid-January when Emery and Rita took the Metro to the Madrid airport. Pike was flying in from Bostons Logan Airport on a direct Delta Airlines flight. Emery cried when he saw him Pike looked happy. Rita gasped. The not so long ago emaciated Pike had put some weight back on. His cheeks were almost plump. His clothes were neat and tidy. He looked good. He had his heavy, hairy golden coat over his arm, and only a light pack on his back. On Pike's head was a big new smooth and golden Stetson cowboy hat. When he lifted it and waved it at them, they saw hed gone a little bald. Pike called to them. "Is it really you, Emery? Rita, is it really you?"
