Book excerpt: This volume and its companion volume includes the edited versions of the principal lectures and selected papers presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Optimization and Decision Support Systems in Civil Engineering. The Institute was held in the Department of Civil Engineering at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh from June 25th to July 6th 1989 and was attended by eighty participants from Universities and Research Institutes around the world. A number of practising civil and structural engineers also attended. The lectures and papers have been divided into two volumes to reflect the dual themes of the Institute namely Optimization and Decision Support Systems in Civil Engineering. Planning for this ASI commenced in late 1986 when Andrew Templeman and I discussed developments in the use of the systems approach in civil engineering. A little later it became clear that much of this approach could be realised through the use of knowledge-based systems and artificial intelligence techniques. Both Don Grierson and John Gero indicated at an early stage how important it would be to include knowledge-based systems within the scope of the Institute. The title of the Institute could have been: 'Civil Engineering Systems' as this would have reflected the range of systems applications to civil engineering problems considered by the Institute. These volumes therefore reflect the full range of these problems including: structural analysis and design; water resources engineering; geotechnical engineering; transportation and environmental engineering.

Book excerpt: Formulation of an optimal dynamic structural system design problem requires identification of design variables that describe the structural system, a cost function that needs to be minimized, and performance and safety constraints for the system. The formulation of the problem depends upon the type of application and objectives to be achieved, i.e., the shape, the sizing, or topology design problem. Specific design variable definition, cost of function and constraints are dictated by the application. This volume is a comprehensive treatment of the general methods involved in this broadly fundamental problem and provides essential techniques in specific but pervasive structural dynamic systems elements and their optimization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering the whole spectrum of vibration theory and itsapplications in both civil and mechanical engineering, Mechanicaland Structural Vibrations provides the most comprehensive treatmentof the subject currently available. Based on the author s manyyears of experience in both academe and industry, it is designed tofunction equally well as both a day-to-day working resource forpracticing engineers and a superior upper-level undergraduate orgraduate-level text. Features a quick-reference format that, Mechanical and StructuralVibrations gives engineers instant access to the specific theory orapplication they need. Saves valuable time ordinarily spent wadingthrough unrelated or extraneous material. And, while they arethoroughly integrated throughout the text, applications to bothcivil and mechanical engineering are organized into sections thatpermit the reader to reference only the material germane to his orher field. Students and teachers will appreciate the book's practical,real-world approach to the subject, its emphasis on simplicity andaccuracy of analytical techniques, and its straightforward,step-by-step delineation of all numerical methods used incalculating the dynamics and vibrations problems, as well as thenumerous examples with which the author illustrates those methods. They will also appreciate the many chapter-end practice problems(solutions appear in appendices) designed to help them rapidlydevelop mastery of all concepts and methods covered. Readers will find many versatile new concepts and analyticaltechniques not covered in other texts, including nonlinearanalysis, inelastic response of structural and mechanicalcomponents of uniform and variable stiffness, the "dynamic hinge,""dynamically equivalent systems," and other breakthrough tools andtechniques developed by the author and his collaborators. Mechanical and Structural Vibrations is both an excellent text forcourses in structural dynamics, dynamic systems, and engineeringvibration and a valuable tool of the trade for practicing engineersworking in a broad range of industries, from electronic packagingto aerospace. Timely, comprehensive, practical--a superior student text and anindispensable working resource for busy engineers Mechanical and Structural Vibrations is the first text to cover theentire spectrum of vibration theory and its applications in bothcivil and mechanical engineering. Written by an author with over aquarter century of experience as a teacher and practicing engineer,it is designed to function equally well as a working professionalresource and an upper-level undergraduate or graduate-level textfor courses in structural dynamics, dynamic systems, andengineering vibrations. Mechanical and Structural Vibrations: * Takes a practical, application-oriented approach to the subject * Features a quick-reference format that gives busy professionalsinstant access to the information needed for the task at hand * Walks readers, step-by-step, through the numerical methods usedin calculating the dynamics and vibration problems * Introduces many cutting-edge concepts and analytical tools notcovered in other texts * Is packed with real-world examples covering everything from thestresses and strains on buildings during an earthquake to thoseaffecting a space craft during lift-off * Contains chapter-end problems--and solutions--that help studentsrapidly develop mastery of all important concepts and methodscovered * Is extremely well-illustrated and includes more than 300diagrams, tables, charts, illustrations, and more

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civil engineering structures tend to be fabricated from materials that respond elastically at normal levels of loading. Most such materials, however, would exhibit a marked and ductile inelasticity if the structure were overloaded by accident or by some improbable but naturally occuring phenomeon. Indeed, the very presence of such ductility constitutes an important safety provision for large-scale constructions where human life is at risk. In the comprehensive evaluation of safety in structural design, it is therefore unrealistic not to consider the effects of ductility. This book sets out to show that the bringing together of the theory and methods of mathematical programming with the mathematical theory of plasticity furnishes a model which has a unifying theoretical nature and is entirely representative of observed structural behaviour. The contents of the book provide a review of the relevant aspects of mathematical programming and plasticity theory, together with a detailed presentation of the most interesting and potentially useful applications in both framed and continuum structures: ultimate strength and elastoplastic deformability; shakedown and practical upper bounds on deformation measures; evolutive dynamic response; large displacements and instability; stochastic and fuzzy programming for representing uncertainty in ultimate strength calculations. Besides providing a ready fund of computational algorithms, mathematical programming invests applications in mechanics with a refined mathematical formalism, rich in fundamental theorems, which often gives addi- tional insight into known results and occasionally lead to new ones. In addition to its obvious practical utility, the educational value of the material thoroughly befits a university discipline.
