Book Synopsis A Mannered Grace by : Elizabeth Friedmann

Book excerpt: A decade in the making and eagerly anticipated, here is the authorized biography, written by the woman Laura (Riding) Jackson took into her confidence. Elizabeth Friedmann met Laura (Riding) Jackson in 1985, after five years of correspondence, and worked with her until her death in 1991. From the vantage point of a close friend and with access to all of (Riding) Jackson's papers, Friedmann now sheds new light on the life and work of one of the most important yet perplexing figures in American and British literary history. With fascinating detail, Friedmann recreates the writer and her world. We share a young Laura's excitement when, in the early 1920s, her poems attract the attention of John Crowe Ransom and Allen Tate. We recognize her sense of destiny when she goes to England and begins her productive collaboration with Robert Graves. Friedmann shows the life and world circumstances that led to such historic works as A Survey of Modernist Poetry (written with Graves) and the Collected Poems of 1938. She takes us into Laura's diverse circle of associates that included Hart Crane, Gertrude Stein, and Virginia Woolf. So intimate is this portrait that the "scandals" of (Riding) Jackson's personal and professional lifeher "three-life" with Graves and Nancy Nicholson, her attempted suicide, her role in the breakup of Schuyler Jackson's first marriage, and her renunciation of poetryare demystified, put into perspective, made understandable. Friedmann shows that (Riding) Jackson was not a divided woman, as some have said. Rather, she maintained a "mannered grace" and possessed an inner consistency of thought and purpose. Beautifully written, fair-minded, and compassionate, A Mannered Grace humanizes a complex and often demonized figure, and allows for a reassessment of her remarkable achievement.

Book excerpt: A ranch girl married an alcoholic at sixteen. She was thrust into big city life, a life filled with depression and courage. What she wanted most was to be someones beloved wife and a stay-at-home mom. Women worked in mens trades during WWII then returned to raising families and what was accepted as womens work. Grace began crossing over as a girl; ranch work was gender neutral. In the late 1960s, trying to support five children, she learned how to paint houses inside and out. The early 1970s found her skidding logstwo hundred logs a day with a Pettibone Skidder. When this stopped, she tried for a job with a paint contractor. Working for someone else was scary. Could she meet the standards expected in a trade filled with men? Grace went on to become a journeyman painter, a contractor, a foreman, a supervisor, an addiction counselor, horse breeder, sales, and in retirement, an author. From racing bareback on her favorite horse over the hills and valleys in Western Montana to the Twin Cities and back to her beloved Montana, Graces path was not easy. So many decisions ended up being mistakes. Grace places seventy-six years of life in this book. Her life was controlled by circumstances throughout those years. Because of this, she wore many different hats as she struggled to survive. Eleanor Roosevelt said, You do the things you think you cannot do.

Book excerpt: 'Grace Harlowe's Overland Riders on the Great American Desert' is a Western novel about a character named Grace Harlowe and her friends who went through adventures on horseback around North America, upon their return from Europe. At the beginning of the novel, she encountered a horse, who did not move a muscle for a few seconds, and then, with a sudden turn of the head, made a grab for his rider's leg. Grace, never having taken her eyes from the laid-back ears, gave a quick kick with her left foot, catching the pony fairly on the nose. As he hastily withdrew his head, she took advantage of the opportunity to tighten up on the reins, which brought the animal's head well up. All these preparatory activities were observed with intense interest by cowboys and Overlanders.
