Book excerpt: The reconstruction of deficient alveolar ridges using vertical and/or horizontal guided bone regeneration techniques allows for ideal implant placement, which is crucial for function and also for esthetically successful outcomes. Unlike in the past, when meeting a patient's functional demands was sufficient, many patients now have greater expectations from their implant restoration. Hence, it is no longer enough simply to restore the edentulous space with a functioning tooth or teeth. Repair of lost ridge contour and prevention of unacceptable esthetic deformities are the goals of current bone augmentation procedures. The dental profession should adopt a proactive preventive philosophy of patient disease management to do all that is possible to prevent the formation of alveolar ridge defects. If the future prosthesis is implant and sufficient bone volume to properly place the implant is absent, techniques like guided bone regeneration (with / without grafts), simple bone grafting (with / without growth factors), sinus floor elevation (for posterior maxilla), orthodontic extrusion, controlled tissue expansion, distraction osteogenesis can be undertaken

Book excerpt: Volume 7 of the ITI Treatment Guide series provides clinicians with the latest evidence-based information on the techniques and materials utilized for ridge augmentation. An up-to-date analysis of the current evidence is based in part on the proceedings of the ITI Consensus Conferences in Stuttgart (2008) and Bern (2013) and on a review of the current literature. Twelve clinical cases demonstrate the planning and treatment principles required to successfully rehabilitate patients with varying degrees of ridge atrophy. The ITI Treatment Guide series is a compendium of evidence-based implant-therapy techniques and procedures for daily practice. Written by renowned clinicians and supported by contributions from expert practitioners, the ITI Treatment Guides provide a comprehensive overview of various clinical options. The management of different clinical situations is discussed with an emphasis on sound diagnostics, evidencebased treatment concepts, and predictable treatment outcomes with minimal risk to the patient.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rehabilitation of missing teeth with dental implant-supported restorations has become a predictable treatment option in dentistry. The stability of hard and soft tissues around the implant is fundamental for long-term success. However, due to factors such as trauma, oncologic diseases, and missing teeth, vertical and horizontal bone loss is expected, and the available bone may not be suitable for optimum implant placement. Ridge augmentation procedures are applied to increase in the volume of the deficient sites for implant treatment. Autogenous block bone augmentation and guided bone regeneration (GBR) are two surgical approaches for implant placement. Autogenous bone is widely used for augmentations because of its osteogenic potential. A myriad of biomaterials, including xenografts, allografts, alloplasts, and composite grafts, are available for GBR. The aim of this chapter is to provide a brief summary of these methods and to discuss the advantages and pitfalls of ridge augmentation techniques.
