Book excerpt: Between the 1930s and the invention of the internet, American comics reached readers in a few distinct physical forms: the familiar monthly stapled pamphlet, the newspaper comics section, bubblegum wrappers, and bound books. From Gum Wrappers to Richie Rich: The Materiality of Cheap Comics places the history of four representative comics—Watchmen, Uncle Scrooge, Richie Rich, and Fleer Funnies—in the larger contexts of book history, children’s culture, and consumerism to understand the roles that comics have played as very specific kinds of books. While comics have received increasing amounts of scholarly attention over the past several decades, their material form is a neglected aspect of how creators, corporations, and readers have constructed meaning inside and around narratives. Neale Barnholden traces the unusual and surprising histories of comics ranging from the most acclaimed works to literal garbage, analyzing how the physical objects containing comics change the meaning of those comics. For example, Carl Barks’s Uncle Scrooge comics were gradually salvaged by a fan-driven project, an evolution that is evident when considering their increasingly expensive forms. Similarly, Watchmen has been physically made into the epitome of “prestigious graphic novel” by the DC Comics corporation. On the other hand, Harvey Comics’ Richie Rich is typically misunderstood as a result of its own branding, while Fleer Funnies uses its inextricable association with bubblegum to offer unexpectedly sophisticated meanings. Examining the bibliographical histories of each title, Barnholden demonstrates how the materiality of consumer culture suggests meanings to comics texts beyond the narratives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late Norman Rich (1921-2020) was an internationally recognized scholar of European history who taught at Brown University and Michigan State University, among other places. Professor Rich’s life and career were unorthodox. He came from a working-class background in Cleveland, Ohio, but even as a child he traveled widely and was fluent in several languages thanks to the influence of his mother, who emigrated from Germany to North America in 1908. As a teenager, Norman was briefly educated in Switzerland and personally witnessed many of the events that informed World War II, including Mussolini’s declaration of the Second Roman Empire, the eruption of the Spanish Civil War, and the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games. Norman was a committed pacifist and became a conscientious objector during World War II, living in a labor camp in the high desert of California. After the war, he earned his Ph.D. at the University of California at Berkeley, and then worked for five years as part of the American team studying and translating the mass of German Foreign Office records captured by the Allies at the end of the War. He subsequently held research fellowships at Princeton and Oxford. His meticulous research and command of original sources was such that his multi-volume works on German diplomacy in the years preceding World War I, Adolph Hitler’s purposes in instigating and prosecuting World War II, and 19th and 20th century diplomatic history became standards in their field. Yet Norman had many dimensions beyond that of an historian; other than his family, his first interests were music, art and architecture. Norman and his wife Joan Hitchcock Rich—known to her friends as Ning— were civic activists in Providence and longtime residents of Lyme, Connecticut. Hundreds, if not thousands, of students and friends were profoundly influenced and benefited by the Riches’ mentoring and friendship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some people are just naturally good at not getting rich. They didn't buy Microsoft when a friend mentioned that he was helping start up a new software company. They sold their apartment in Manhattan for a song in the seventies, instinctively believing the real estate market would never, ever come back. These people have built-in wealth prevention systems that steer them safely away from big money even in the most wealth-rich intersections of their lives. In this book, Robert Sullivan, an expert in the art of not getting rich and staying that way, shows us some simple, non-time consuming ways to cultivate a basic day-to-day attitude that will lead to not getting rich, as well as a few long-term strategies that will help you stay that way. For instance, a good well-rounded education is a must if you are planning on working your entire life and ending up with little or nothing. Choose a field of study that will be personally rewarding but has no apparent application in the real world, such as medieval literature or traditional music. And by all means choose an investment strategy that will definitely not get you rich, such as following the herd. Along the way, spend your money unwisely, read novels and books (a habit that will greatly aid you in your pursuit to not be rich), marry for love, and waste otherwise money-making hours throwing a Frisbee in the park or even playing with your kids, becoming the kind of role model that will never be featured on Forbes's list of the wealthiest people in the world. Sharp, funny, and ultimately comforting, How Not to Get Rich is a guide to happiness without wealth, not that the author wouldn't mind a little wealth with his happiness. How Not to Get Rich is probably not worth the price, but what is?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK Think and Grow Rich, originally published in 1937, is a book that helped launch the personal development genre. Written by Napoleon Hill, the book outlines thirteen principles to achieving success and is considered a classic by business and success gurus. It is also consistently listed in Business Week's list of best selling business books. The book idea came from Andrew Carnegie who believed there was a formula to success and challenged Hill to interview or analyze 500 successful people and compile the information into an easy-to-read strategy. Although not sure he was up to the task, Hill completed the interviews and organized the results into the Laws of Success (1928) and eventually into Think and Grow Rich. MEET THE AUTHOR Leslie Truex is an online entrepreneur and freelance writer. She is the author of The Work-At-Home Success Bible (Adams Media) and Jobs Online (self-published). Her small business articles appear on Lenovo's Small Business Insights, the Houston Chronicle's Chron.com, and eHow. She's written several hundred articles on fitness and nutrition for LIVESTRONG.com. Since 1998, she has provided work-at-home information through her website, WorkAtHomeSuccess.com. She teaches work-at-home and writing related courses through Piedmont Virginia Community College. She has a B.A. in Psychology from Willamette University and an MSW from California State University, Sacramento. Her social work experience includes school counseling, public health and adoptions. She is also an AFAA certified aerobics instructor. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Think and Grow Rich is a blueprint for achieving wealth and personal success. But the book doesn't discuss how to start a business or invest money. Instead, it focuses on psychological, emotional and spiritual growth required for achievement. The original 1937 edition contains sixteen chapters, thirteen of which outline his steps toward riches such as Desire, Faith and Persistence. The book uses the material Hill collected over many years of interviewing successful people and synthesizes it into a philosophy of success. It contains the personal stories and anecdotes of early twentieth century millionaires including Woodrow Wilson, Thomas Edison, John D. Rockefeller, Henry Ford and Alexander Graham Bell. Along with personal stories of successful businessmen, the book provides steps to developing each of the personal attributes needed for success. For example, in the Desire chapter, Hill gives six steps setting and working towards goals.

Book excerpt: Small indigenous fish species (SIS) are an important source of essential macro- and micronutrients that can play an important role in the elimination of malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies in the populations of many South and Southeast Asian countries. Of the 260 freshwater fish species in Bangladesh, more than 140 are classified as SIS and are an integral part of the rural Bangladeshi diet. As many SIS are eaten whole, with organs and bones, they contain high amounts of vitamins and minerals, including calcium, and iron and zinc. Some SIS, such as mola, are also rich in vitamin A. SIS are often cooked with vegetables and a little oil, so they contribute to the food diversity of the rural poor.SIS are recognized as a major animal-source food group, contributing to improved food and nutrition security and livelihoods of the people of South and Southeast Asia. The purpose of this workshop is to bring together policy makers, extension agents, researchers, non-governmental and development organizations to share knowledge about small fish, their contribution to better nutrition, production technologies, and strategies for wider dissemination of pond culture and wetland based-production and conservation technologies. The workshop is expected to generate ideas for further research and development of sustainable technologies for production, management and conservation of SIS for the benefit of the people of Bangladesh as well as the South and Southeast Asian region.

Which state of living are you basking now? Let us not be one of those people who just say "Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)" because YOU, yes YOU, can do something about it. From witnessing the death of her father at the age of 15. To living in the streets of Manila. To coming to Canada with $0 money in her pocket. Together with her other sister, Joem financially assisted her two siblings in their university education (currently one sibling is a Canadian License Medical doctor, the other is a Canadian License Immigration Consultant and the other sibling is a Canadian business owner). She believes in the saying “Charity begins at home”. To creating and building business that give back to the community and provide employment local and abroad. And to living her God’s Retirement Plan at the age of 41. Joem will inspire, motivate and educate you financially by presenting 3 simple ways in achieving God’s richness intended for you. Also, this book will challenge the common notion of “poorness” and “richness”: Is richness living in an expensive house? Driving an expensive vehicle? Being famous or powerful?
