Download or read book Richmond Area written by Lori Nye and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This visual history of Richmond depicts the area from its beginning as four small, individual communities: Beebe's Corners, Ridgeway-Lenox, an unincorporated business center between them known as Cooper's Town, and Muttonville. The Richmond area was first settled by pioneer families that had a collective vision of growth and prosperity for themselves and their communities. The dreams and visions of Daniel Hall and Erastus and Henry Beebe, men who carved a life out of the virgin forest, appear to have come true with the modern and bustling city of Richmond.

Book Synopsis Race, Class and Power in the Building of Richmond, 1870-1920 by : Steven J. Hoffman
Download or read book Race, Class and Power in the Building of Richmond, 1870-1920 written by Steven J. Hoffman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-08-30 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using post-Civil War Richmond, Virginia, as a case study, Hoffman explores the role of race and class in the city building process from 1870 to 1920. Richmond's railroad connections enabled the city to participate in the commercial expansion that accompanied the rise of the New South. A highly compact city of mixed residential, industrial and commercial space at the end of the Civil War, Richmond remained a classic example of what historians call a "walking city" through the end of the century. As city streets were improved and public transportation became available, the city's white merchants and emerging white middle class sought homes removed from the congested downtown. The city's African American and white workers generally could not afford to take part in this residential migration. As a result, the mixture of race and class that had existed in the city since its inception began to disappear. The city of Richmond exemplified characteristics of both Northern and Southern cities during the period from 1870 to 1920. Retreating Confederate soldiers had started fires that destroyed the city in 1865, but by 1870, the former capital of the Confederacy was on the road to recovery from war and reconstruction, reestablishing itself as an important manufacturing and trade center. The city's size, diversity and economic position at the time not only allows for comparisons to both Northern and Southern cities but also permits an analysis of the role of groups other than the elite in city building process. By taking a look at Richmond, we are able to see a more complete picture of how American cities have come to be the way they are.

Book Synopsis An Illustrated Guide to Virginia's Confederate Monuments by : Timothy S. Sedore
Download or read book An Illustrated Guide to Virginia's Confederate Monuments written by Timothy S. Sedore and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2011-04-29 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From well-known battlefields, such as Manassas, Fredericksburg, and Appomattox, to lesser-known sites, such as Sinking Spring Cemetery and Rude’s Hill, Sedore leads readers on a vivid journey through Virginia’s Confederate history. Tablets, monoliths, courthouses, cemeteries, town squares, battlefields, and more are cataloged in detail and accompanied by photographs and meticulous commentary. Each entry contains descriptions, fascinating historical information, and location, providing a complete portrait of each site. Much more than a visual tapestry or a tourist’s handbook, An Illustrated Guide to Virginia’s Confederate Monuments draws on scholarly and field research to reveal these sites as public efforts to reconcile mourning with Southern postwar ideologies. Sedore analyzes in depth the nature of these attempts to publicly explain Virginia’s sense of grief after the war, delving deep into the psychology of a traumatized area. From commemorations of famous generals to memories of unknown soldiers, the dead speak from the pages of this sweeping companion to history.

Thomas offers an astute analysis of Civil War Richmond that remains unchallenged to this day. Blending official documents and city council minutes with personal diaries and newspaper accounts, Thomas vividly recounts the military, political, social, and economic experiences of the Confederate capital, providing a compelling drama of home-front war that, in Richmond's case, rivaled the spectacular events on the battlefield. One of the first studies in southern urban history, The Confederate State of Richmonddeftly demonstrates how Richmond responded to the intense demands of war and became a great capital city.
