This book was released on 2021-12-17 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of a pair of volumes publishing the unedited full reports of Schomburgk's travels in Guiana between 1835 and 1844, previously available only in greatly abridged and heavily edited versions. After his explorations in Guiana between 1835 and 1839 on behalf of the Royal Geographical Society, which are the subject of Volume I of The Guiana Travels of Robert Schomburgk 1835-1844, Robert Schomburgk travelled to London. He was appointed Her Majesty's Commissioner for Boundaries with the duty to survey the boundaries of British Guiana, hitherto undefined. His surveys between 1841 and 1843 consisted of three journeys. The first took him to the mouth of the Orinoco River, from where he traced the boundary south-westward to the Cuyuni River, before returning to Georgetown. The second journey involved the survey of the boundary with Brazil: first, south to the sources of the Takutu River; and then north to Mount Roraima. In the third he covered the boundary with Dutch Guiana (modern Surinam), which involved an arduous trip down the length of the Corentyne River. Schomburgk returned to London in 1844 and was knighted for his services. Volume II of The Guiana Travels contains his reports of these journeys. In abbreviated form they appeared in the Journal of the Royal Geographical Society. Here they are published in full, including the material censored by the Colonial Office, which mainly details abuses of the native population committed by Venezuelans and Brazilians. In an 'Epilogue' an account is provided of his later career. The volume also includes two appendices: a summary of the boundary disputes which arose as a result of Schomburgk's survey and a vocabulary of vernacular plant names.

Book Synopsis Mechanisms of Sound Production in the Ariid Catfishes Galeichthys and Bagre by : William N. Tavolga

This book was released on 1962 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The skeletal basis of the sound producing mechanism in the ariid catfishes Galeichthys felis and Bagre marinus consists of a thin shelf of bone which is firmly attached to the anterior dorsal wall of the swim bladder. This so-called 'elastic spring,' or 'Springfederapparat,' is formed from the parapophysis of the fourth vertebra. The anterior ramus of this parapophysis, herein named the 'Müllerian ramus' (after Johannes Müller who, in 1842, first described the structure), is the main vibrating element in sound production. The skulls and anterior vertebral complexes of Galeichthys and Bagre are figured and described, with comparisons with a non-sonic silurid form, Wallago. The 'protractor muscle' (so named by Bridge and Haddon in 1893) which activates the Müllerian ramus is a highly vascularized conical muscle, the origin of which is on the under side of the epiotic lamina and insertion on the Müllerian ramus. It is innervated by the dorsal branch of the occipital nerve. The relationship of this nerve to the cranial nerves of higher vertebrates is controversial, but it is probably homologous with the hypoglossal (XII). Stimulation of the protractor muscle or its nerve supply with repetitive spike-form potentials results in an audible sound output from the Springfederapparat. This response can be recorded and analyzed, and its fundamental pitch is equivalent to the pulse frequency of the stimulus. The protractor muscle is remarkable in that it can withstand stimulations of 300 or more pulses per second without going into immediate tetany. In Bagre, the frequency response of the sonic system is about an octave higher than that in Galeichthys. Spontaneous sounds from these species consist of low-pitched grunts (fundamental pitch of about 150 cycles per second) and, in Bagre, higher, sob-like sounds (400 cycles per second or over). The harmonic components of both artificially induced and spontaneous sounds can be influenced by the amount of sound reflectance in the external environment. Even under partially anechoic conditions, the sound output is virtually a pure tone. Damage to the swim bladder reduces the amplitude of the sound but not its timbre (i.e., harmonic content). It was concluded that the swim bladder does not serve as a resonating chamber for these sounds, nor is it a true amplifier. Rather, it transfers the energy from the small area of the vibrating Müllerian ramus to the larger area of its entire outer surface, thus making the propagation of the sound from its source to the water more efficient. In acoustical and electronic terms, the swim bladder is an impedance matching device"--P. 27.

Book Synopsis Charles Waterton by : Brian W. Edginton
Download or read book Charles Waterton written by Brian W. Edginton and published by James Clarke & Co.. This book was released on 1996 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Waterton (1782-1865) n a true English eccentric, ironically self-styled 'the most commonplace of men'. He talked to insects, fought with snakes, rode an alligator and lived like a monk. He was made famous in his own lifetime by publication of hiswide-ranging travels and natural history observations - always fun, often perceptive, and unfailingly individual. One of his more notable contributions to science was the introduction into Europe of curare, now an invaluable drug in surgical operations. He turned his family estate into an extensive nature reserve; long before such things were heard of, and threw open his gates to the local populace as long as they understood that birds and animals had security of tenure. Waterton wrote three volumes of Essays on Natural History and the best-selling Wanderings in South America, which has never been out of print since the first publication in 1825. He was a fearsome satirist and pamphleteer, attacking prominent figures of his day both with his powerful penand with his taxidermy skills. His simple charm made a mockery of all those enemies who tried to capitalise on his human failings. Unlike previous biographies, this book is an unabashed celebration of his eccentricity, a fond salute to a fine old Englishgentleman. In the centenary year of the Canadian national park which is named after him, the life of Charles Waterton should encourage the preservation of what remains of his kind of world, and remind us of what the world has lost to insensitivity and greed.

Download or read book Cannibal Democracy written by Zita Nunes and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zita Nunes argues that the prevailing narratives of identity formation throughout the Americas share a dependence on metaphors of incorporation and, often, of cannibalism. From the position of the incorporating body, the construction of a national and racial identity through a process of assimilation presupposes a remainder, a residue. Nunes addresses works by writers and artists who explore what is left behind in the formation of national identities and speak to the limits of the contemporary discourse of democracy. Cannibal Democracy tracks its central metaphor’s circulation through the work of writers such as Mrio de Andrade, W. E. B. Du Bois, and Toni Morrison and journalists of the black press, as well as work by visual artists including Magdalena Campos-Pons and Keith Piper, and reveals how exclusion-understood in terms of what is left out-can be fruitfully understood in terms of what is left over from a process of unification or incorporation. Nunes shows that while this remainder can be deferred into the future-lurking as a threat to the desired stability of the present-the residue haunts discourses of national unity, undermining the ideologies of democracy that claim to resolve issues of race. Zita Nunes is associate professor of English at the University of Maryland, College Park.
