Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Practical Exposition of the Book of Proverbs - George Lawson (1749 - 1820) Of Augustus Caesar it is said, that when he read the works of men of learning and genius, he used to extract such precepts as might prove useful to him in his government. This part of his conduct manifested wisdom; the precepts thus collected, served to assist him and his ministers in managing the affairs of the empire. But the necessity of our imitating this part of his conduct, has been in a great measure superseded by that Spirit of truth, under whose guidance Solomon wrote his Proverbs, and transmitted them to future ages for their instruction in righteousness. In this little book there appears more wisdom than in the combined monuments of Greek and Roman learning. The wisest of men wrote it, and his object is to make us wise. But a greater than Solomon is here, for Wisdom speaks in her own person. The first nine chapters are a preface to the book. In it Solomon recommends to our study, that wisdom which he designs to teach, and insists on some of her most useful precepts.

Nobody likes recessions and nobody likes lean living-and indeed nobody should like them. For fifteen years I tried to find such a book as this one. During those years of searching the book shelves, I found that there are many books which give various success ideas, but in none of them did I find a set of compact, simple laws for assuring success. Years ago, a salesman used the power of prosperous thinking, although he may not consciously been aware of it. When people asked him, "How's business?" he always gave this standard answer: "Business is wonderful because there's gold dust in the air!" For him it certainly seemed to be so-every contact became a sale. After a while, whenever his name was mentioned, people always said, "Yes, everything he touches turns to gold. Book excerpt: Compilation, Anthology. A fascinating story of how it came to be that times have changed but they have not! This has lead to an abundance of evidence. An unholy rapture that only occurs when The Water Well of The Eternal is found and tampered with in an unnatural way! Also, for those who so selfishly take advantage of the bounty of Earth's creation itself? The well that's only kept in check by the great power of The Mighty Companion. The same power that still lives within its life giving source. So, will the Time Walkers and those who drink of the holiness prosper? Or, will they become slaves to its never ending servitude? The same which plagues all those who partake of The Water Well of the Eternal?

Collected out of the mere Authorities of Scripture, and common and unanimous consent of the faithful interpreters and dispensers of God's Mysteries upon the same, especially as they express the excellency of Free Justification. Preached and delivered by JOHN EATON, Master of Arts, sometime Student in Trinity College in Oxford; and fifteen years Minister and Preacher at Wickham-Market in SUFFOLK. Paul reproving Peter in the face of the Congregation, hath here no trifling matter in hand, but the chiefest Article of all Christian Doctrine; the Majesty and Utility whereof, who so rightly esteemeth, to him all other things shall seem but vile, and nothing worth; for what is Peter? What is Paul? What is an Angel from heaven? What are all creatures to the Article of Free Justification? Which if we know, then are we in the clear light; but if we be ignorant thereof, then are we in most miserable darkness. Martin Luther

Book excerpt: The recent resurgence of interest in the Puritan John Owen has resulted in increasing requests for Kelly Kapic's Communion with God, which was one of the books that helped foster renewed attention on this classic theologian. This book is now back in print with a new preface by the author. According to Kapic, a variety of people today are rediscovering Owen, including academic theologians, ministers from different denominational backgrounds, and laypeople interested in classic forms of spirituality. With this diverse audience in mind, Kapic focuses on the concept of communion with God in Owen's thought, covering key areas such as anthropology, Christology, trinitarian studies, and the Lord's supper. Kapic shows that Owen remains a rich dialogue partner for those engaged both in contemporary theology and pastoral practice.

Book excerpt: Jesus said that the Kingdom of God is like a treasure buried in a desolate field that one would sell all of his possessions to attain. Yet the shocking reality is that this treasure remains buried as the average Christian and Church are sadly unaware of what the Kingdom of God is or why it even matters. In his revealing first work, Brandon Andress writes that while the Christian and the Church continue to chase their tails in pursuit of an identity and purpose in the world, it is ultimately the unearthing of the Kingdom of God that will transform the Church and change the world. While walking simplistically through the parables of Jesus to get a better understanding of Kingdom of God, this book will also convince and inspire you and your Church to be the means through which the Kingdom of God breaks into the world in power.

Book excerpt: Medical ethics has been a constant adjunct of Western medicine from its origins in Greek times. Although the Hippocratic Oath has been intensely studied, until recently there has been very little historical work on medical ethics between the Oath and Thomas Percival's Medical Ethics of 1803, which is commonly thought of as the first treatise on modern medical ethics. This volume brings together original research which throws new light on how standards of behaviour for medical practitioners were articulated in the different religious, political and social as well as medical contexts from the classical period until the nineteenth century. Its ten essays will place the early history of medical ethics into the framework of the new social and intellectual history of medicine that has been developed in the last ten years.
