This publication outlines current options for integrated management of tungro and critically reassesses vector control strategies. Of interest to scientists and officials from national agricultural departments who have to make decisions on the management of this important disease.

Book Synopsis Biological Control of Rice Diseases by : Samuel S. Gnanamanickam
Download or read book Biological Control of Rice Diseases written by Samuel S. Gnanamanickam and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-07-14 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is suf?cient need to document all the available data on biological control of rice diseases in a small volume. Part of this need rests on the global importance of rice to human life. In the ?rst chapter, I have tried to show that rice is indeed life for most people in Asia and shortages in production and availability can lead to a food crisis. While rice is cultivated in most continents, biological disease management attains special relevance to rice farmers of Africa, Asia, and also perhaps, Latin America. These farmers are resource-poor and might not be able to afford the cost of expensive chemical treatments to control devastating rice pathogens such as Magnaporthe oryzae (blast), Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (bacterial leaf blight), Rhizoctonia solani (sheath blight) and the virus, rice tungro disease. In an earlier volume that I developed under the title, Biological Control of Crop Diseases (Dekker/CRC Publishers, 2002), I included transgenic crops generated for the management of plant pathogens as biological control under the umbrella of a broad de?nition. Dr Jim Cook who wrote the Foreword for the volume lauded the inclusion of transgenic crops and induced systemic resistance (ISR) as a positive trend toward acceptance of host plant resistance as part of biocontrol. I continue to subscribe to this view.

Book Synopsis Studies on Rice Tungro Disease by : Manish Jha
Download or read book Studies on Rice Tungro Disease written by Manish Jha and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-02 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rice tungro disease (RTD) is a major constraint in production of rice (Oryza sativa L.) not only in India but in all South and Southeast Asia. Host plant resistance is the most effective and economical method for control of this virus disease. Regular research is required in search of useful genes providing resistance against various strains of virus. This has necessitated a detailed study on gene expression analysis of rice genotypes infected with rice tungro virus. One hundred and twenty rice genotypes (120) comprising of fifty one (51) rice entries of International Rice Tungro Nursery (IRTN) lines and sixty six (66) rice entries of N 22 mutants along with two resistant rice cultivar and one susceptible check were screened against RTD using viruliferous GLH vector under glasshouse conditions. Six rice cultivars T(N)1 and Tapaswini (susceptible), IR 20 and IR 67406-6-3-2-3 (moderately resistant), TKM-6 and Vikramarya (resistant) were tested against RTD on yield parameters. Further, Gene expression studies were carried out with selected genes (PBZ1, LRR, CAT and RF2a) in susceptible rice cv. T(N)1 and resistant rice cv. Nidhi by artificial inoculation of RTV using viruliferous GLH.

There are 25 chapters dealing with the blast, sheath blight, sheath rot, brown spot and scald diseases of rice as well as some broader topics. The book covers recent progress in a number of key fundamental aspects such as pathogenicity, pathogen diversity, molecular characterisation, gene cloning, genetics of host resistance and host-pathogen interactions. It also presents the current status and perspectives in strategic and applied areas such as epidemiology, resistance breeding, biological control, induced resistance, seed-borne diseases and quarantine issues and disease management strategies. This book is essential for rice researchers, pathologists and breeders and will also be suitable for cereal and plant pathologists in general, as there is an extensive coverage of recent research advances in rice blast, a model system in plant pathology.
