Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rhymes of Royalty, the History of England in Verse: From the Conquest by William, Duke of Normandy, to the Reign of Our Most Gracious Sovereign Queen Victoria The Author has added, by way of Appendix to the Rhymes, a sketch of the character of each monarch, and a brief summary, under separate heads, of the most striking events connected with each reign. Download or read book The Secret History of Nursery Rhymes written by Linda Alchin and published by Linda Alchin. This book was released on 2013-04 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many nursery rhymes are believed to be associated with actual events in history, and include references to murder, torture, betrayal, greed, and to tyrants and royalty. The words were remembered but their secret histories were forgotten. Political satire was cleverly disguised in the wording of some, seemingly innocent, nursery rhymes. Although some of the most popular Nursery Rhymes are rooted in English history they are told to children throughout the English-speaking world. Old English Nursery Rhymes were taken to America with the settlers from England. They were then spread across Commonwealth countries including Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Book Synopsis Songs of the Royal Zhōu and the Royal Shào by : Dirk Meyer
Download or read book Songs of the Royal Zhōu and the Royal Shào written by Dirk Meyer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-05-02 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The songs of the Royal Zhōu (“Zhōu Nán” 周南) and of the Royal Shào (“Shào Nán” 召南) have formed a conceptual unit since at least the late Spring and Autumn period (771–453 BC). With this book Meyer and Schwartz provide a first complete reading of their earliest, Warring States (453–221 BC), iteration as witnessed by the Ānhuī University manuscripts. As a thought experiment, the authors seek to establish an emic reading of these songs, which they contextualise in the larger framework of studies of the Shī (Songs) and of meaning production during the Warring States period more broadly. The analysis casts light on how the Songs were used by different groups during the Warring States period.

Download or read book Rhyme's Challenge written by David Caplan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-13 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rhyme's Challenge offers a concise, pithy primer to hip-hop poetics while presenting a spirited defense of rhyme in contemporary American poetry. David Caplan's stylish study examines hip-hop's central but supposedly outmoded verbal technique: rhyme. At a time when print-based poets generally dismiss formal rhyme as old-fashioned and bookish, hip-hop artists deftly deploy it as a way to capture the contemporary moment. Rhyme accommodates and colorfully chronicles the most conspicuous conditions and symbols of contemporary society: its products, technologies, and personalities. Ranging from Shakespeare and Wordsworth to Eminem and Jay-Z, David Caplan's study demonstrates the continuing relevance of rhyme to poetry -- and everyday life.
