Download or read book Selected Poems written by John Dryden and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2002-03-26 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new and comprehensive selection of Dryden's poetry, revealing him as a master of theatricality, ventriloquism, and unmistakable originality. In his lifetime, John Dryden gained fame at the cost first of gossip and scandal and then of suspicion and scorn. He wrote to order, currying favor with the Crown and repeatedly savaging its enemies. Yet the finest works of his political and spiritual imagination- "Absalom and Achitophel" and "The Hind and the Panther"-develop the themes of envy, ambition, and misdeed in ways that far transcend their era. During the Glorious Revolution, Dryden fell from patronage and favor: he then transformed himself into perhaps the greatest of English translators, a superb interpreter of Virgil and Horace, Juvenal and Persius, Boccaccio and Chaucer. This edition contains a preface and annotations accompanying each poem, modernized spelling and punctuation, and an informative introduction and chronology. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Book Synopsis Fifty Years of the Concept Album in Popular Music by : Eric Wolfson
Download or read book Fifty Years of the Concept Album in Popular Music written by Eric Wolfson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2023-12-28 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept album is one of popular music's most celebrated-and misunderstood-achievements. This book examines the untold history of the rock concept album, from The Beatles to Beyoncé. The roots of the concept album are nearly as old as the long-playing record itself, as recording artists began using the format to transcend a mere collection of songs into a listening experience that takes the listener on a journey through its unifying mood, theme, narrative, or underlying idea. Along the way, artists as varied as the Moody Blues, Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, Pink Floyd, Parliament, Donna Summer, Iron Maiden, Radiohead, The Notorious B.I.G., Green Day, Janelle Monáe, and Kendrick Lamar created albums that form an extended conversation of art and music. Limits were pushed as the format grew over the subsequent eras. Seminal albums like the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, the Who's Tommy, Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, stand alongside modern classics like Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville, Kendrick Lamar's good kid, "m.A.A.d city," and Beyoncé's Lemonade. Mixing iconic albums with some newer and lesser-known works makes for a book that ventures into the many sides of a history that has yet to be told-until now.

Book Synopsis FAVORITE TRANSLATIONS SOME POEMS OF O.E.MANDELSTAM by : Anna V. Epelbaum
Download or read book FAVORITE TRANSLATIONS SOME POEMS OF O.E.MANDELSTAM written by Anna V. Epelbaum and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-12-16 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the best book of translations of many poems of the great, initially Russian and then Soviet, poet O.E. Mandelstam, whose poetry should be now familiar to English speaking audience. Many previous translations of this poet do not preserve either his rhythm or the structure of his rhymes. Actually, they usually did ignore both. And the poetry is no poetry at all, when such main things are taken out of consideration. These translations preserve both and also the musicality of Mandelstam's poetry. To preserve the meaning of all contents of his poems were, of course, trying to achieve all previous translators. Many of them (actually, all of them) were doing it very often unsuccessfully. All of known previous translators did not have Russian background, and, therefore, often the correct understanding of meanings of Mandelstam's poems, as well. But this current translator has such background and can't make pertinent mistakes.
