Book excerpt: An ancient prophecy made by Nubian Queen Hatshepsut, takes generations to fulfill and in the process we follow events through time, space, and disappearances, finally converging in the 21st century where the prophecy continues fulfilling itself. Oba, an African male-child from the Buganda tribe, was destined to join with Iloree, a female-child from the Yoruba tribe. Their joining was prophesized generations before by the once powerful Nubian Pharaoh of Egypt. But something unholy befalls them before their sacred joining can take place, prompting vengeful curses to be placed on all involved. Joshua Lobett, a young man distraught over the death of his beloved mother, vows to change the laws of life and death. During the course of his medical studies and experiments, his life spirals into a world of derangement and he creates a hideous inhuman life form. MANAWYDAN was a specially designed clipper ship for crossing the Middle Passage with its belly full of Black Gold. While on her maiden voyage, MANAWYDAN experienced mutiny, revolt, and a horrific supernatural storm. Then it suddenly vanished dead center of The Devils Triangle, only to reappear generations later in the 21st Century. Greedily turned into a tourist attraction, the netherworld vessel MANAWYDAN had its own demonic agenda, ruthlessly awaiting the innocent, unsuspecting partiers who board in celebration of her Grand Opening during the Queens Ball on Halloween night in San Francisco.

Book excerpt: In his bestselling Wacky Chicks, irreverent social commentator and humor writer Simon Doonan introduces readers to a bracing cross section of exuberantly unconventional women. In the pages of Wacky Chicks readers will find life lessons from a group of fearlessly inappropriate and fabulously eccentric women, including comedienne Amy Sedaris; fashion designer turned park ranger Spider Fawke; Warhol muse Brigid Berlin; Suzanne Bartsch, the woman who showed Madonna how to vogue; and many more. Distinguished primarily by their wild originality and rule-breaking chutzpah, these women defy rules, shape the cultural landscape, and enrich the world. They are about as diverse a flock as you can imagine, but all of them are Belligerent, Resilient, Uninhibited, Naughty, Creative, and Hilarious (B.R.U.N.C.H. for short). In a word, they are Wacky, and they are ready to enlighten you. A book that pays tribute to the wild and unstoppable female in each of us, Wacky Chicks is the ultimate guide to embracing your inner rebel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the two decades after the turn of the millennium, Vladimir Putin's control over Russian politics and society grew at a steady pace. As the West liberalized its stance on sexuality and gender, Putin's Russia moved in the opposite direction, remolding the performance of Russian citizenship according to a neoconservative agenda characterized by increasingly exaggerated gender roles. By connecting gendered and sexualized citizenship to developments in Russian popular culture, Julie A. Cassiday argues that heteronormativity and homophobia became a kind of politicized style under Putin's leadership. However, while the multiple modes of gender performativity generated in Russian popular culture between 2000 and 2010 supported Putin's neoconservative agenda, they also helped citizens resist and protest the state's mandate of heteronormativity. Examining everything from memes to the Eurovision Song Contest and self-help literature, Cassiday untangles the discourse of gender to argue that drag, or travesti, became the performative trope par excellence in Putin's Russia. Provocatively, Cassiday further argues that the exaggerated expressions of gender demanded by Putin's regime are best understood as a form of cisgender drag. This smart and lively study provides critical, nuanced analysis of the relationship between popular culture and politics in Russia during Putin's first two decades in power.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first multidisciplinary book that addresses the ethics of fur. Whatever might have been true of the past, the production of fur is now morally problematic in terms of both necessity and suffering. There is no necessity in killing animals for nonessential purposes, such as adornment, fashion, or vanity. The argument for utility simply doesn’t hold up. Alternative clothing is now readily available, enduring, and less costly. Worse still, since we know that the animals exploited are sentient, causing them suffering or making animals liable to suffering is arguably intrinsically wrong. The purpose of this volume is to open up and advance further the ethical, political, and specifically legislative endeavors now moving at pace and to encourage the anti-fur movement. That said, there is much to learn from this book about the history, culture, and political arguments for and against fur that should interest scholars and students, as well as those engaged on either side of the debate. It is not common for academics to engage with pressing and contentious moral issues, and we pay tribute to our eighteen contributors for leading the way.
