Rome et ses orateurs, Ciceron surtout, ont apporte a ce sujet les indications les plus fecondes. Le premier chapitre de ce livre montre, de maniere politique et sociologique, les questions qui se posaient dans l' Vrbs. Mais l'ensemble de l'ouvrage traite, selon les enseignements de Ciceron, de la place que tiennent la culture et la sagesse philosophique dans les creations de la parole. Il n'y a pas de rhetorique sans une philosophie du logos. Il existe a ce propos une querelle entre philosophie et rhetorique. Platon adopte la premiere. Aristote tente une mediation entre elles. Ciceron, s'appuyant sur les autres Ecoles et notamment sur les theories du vraisemblable et de la probabilite, propose une synthese qui s'est prolongee du Moyen Age a la modernite a travers la Renaissance. Alain Michel etudie l'art de la persuasion dialectique, l'usage (bon ou mauvais) des passions, de la vehemence, du rire, l'esthetique du sublime et la grace. Il envisage ensemble l'art de la composition (dispositio) et les exigences de l'education - nature et art, recherche de l'ideal dans le cadre de l'humaine comprehension. Cela conduit a une recherche sur le droit, qui unit competence concrete et recherche liberale de l'equite, sur l'activite politique de l'orateur, qui n'a jamais transige avec sa double exigence de justice et de paix ni evite la confrontation lucide du pour ou du contre. Ciceron vecut la fin d'un monde, alors que s'effrondaient les democraties antiques. Il a donne sa vie plutot que de s'incliner. C'est dans cet esprit qu'il a toujours accorde la grace et la beaute, la finesse et la grandeur, la sagesse humaniste faite de comprehension, d'amitie, d'intelligence, et de savoir domine par le sens du dialogue.

As he was acutely aware, this was an unusual undertaking for a Roman statesman because Romans were often hostile to philosophy, perceiving it as foreign and incompatible with fulfilling one's duty as a citizen. How, then, are we to understand Cicero's decision to pursue philosophy in the context of the political, intellectual, and cultural life of the late Roman republic? In A Written Republic, Yelena Baraz takes up this question and makes the case that philosophy for Cicero was not a retreat from politics but a continuation of politics by other means, an alternative way of living a political life and serving the state under newly restricted conditions. Baraz examines the rhetorical battle that Cicero stages in his philosophical prefaces—a battle between the forces that would oppose or support his project. He presents his philosophy as intimately connected to the new political circumstances and his exclusion from politics. His goal—to benefit the state by providing new moral resources for the Roman elite—was traditional, even if his method of translating Greek philosophical knowledge into Latin and combining Greek sources with Roman heritage was unorthodox. A Written Republic provides a new perspective on Cicero's conception of his philosophical project while also adding to the broader picture of late-Roman political, intellectual, and cultural life.

Cet essai de philosophie morale et politique se divise en trois livres. La première partie traite de l’honestum (le bien, le juste) et du decorum (principes éthiques grâce auxquels un homme peut, dans les diverses facettes de la vie civile, distinguer ce qu'il doit faire de ce qu'il ne doit pas faire) ; la seconde traite de l’utile (de la manière dont les hommes peuvent bénéficier du consensus et de la gloria dès qu'ils s’accordent avec l’honestum) ; la troisième traite de l’opposition toujours possible entre l’honnête et l’utile, il développe l’idée d’une opposition entre l’intérêt particulier et l’intérêt collectif, en précurseur de Rousseau. Schaeffer's Sensus Communis: Vico, Rhetoric, and the Limits of Relativism (Durham: Duke University Press, 1990), where Schaeffer aptly noted, summing up a long exegetic tradition, Vico was imbued with rhetoric and convinced of its centrality to Western civilization. Unfortunately, the editions of Vico's works published in English have not yet included the Institutiones Oratoriae, which more or less reflects the lectures on rhetoric given by Vico at the University of Naples, starting with the academic year 1699-1700 and going through 1739-1741. The manual on rhetoric was used in Italy up to the end of the nineteenth century and established the common curriculum in rhetoric to be followed in all Universities. This English edition offers a text of the Institutiones complete on the base of the four known extant manuscripts. It offers the marginal glosses made by Vico's students, a collection of Vico's phrases and explanations of terms collected by some of the students, a glossary of Latin words and rhetorical terms from the Latin text, and a wealth of information in the commentary. The book shows how the Tusculans' much lambasted literary design, critically isolated prefaces, and overlooked didactic plot start to cohere once we read the dialogue for what it is: not a Latin treatise on Greek philosophy, but a Roman drama on education, with a strong political subtext. The first chapter ('The form enigmas and answers') tries to make sense of those features of the work that scholars have found baffling or disappointing, such as the nondescript characters, the uncertain genre, or the lack of setting. Chapter 2 ('The prologues in tyrannum and cultural warfare') analyses how Cicero in his prologues to the five individual books situates his desire to create and teach a 'Latin philosophy' within wider contexts, in particular the dictatorship of Caesar and the intellectual traditions of Greece and Rome.
